Nico & Dani (rating comparison)

Finally got to see Nico & Dani the other day. The DVD is released by New Yorker Video and I'm happy to say that its Enhanced for 16 x 9 tvs.

Happy to say the film was much more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

I was wondering however, I picked up the unrated version but have not heard much about a rated version floating around. Is there one? Has anyone got it. I was trying to figure out what would have been cut from the rated version if there is one.

There is entire scene where the boys have dates with these two girls, and they seem to be slipping them a mickey of some type of sedative. (They understand that this is the way they are supposed to do it I imagine. They must watch too much straight film hehe). Anyway. Dani's girl passes out, and Dani does (at least by US standards) cross the line I believe. He takes off her pantis and begins having sex with her, while she is passed out.

I thought this was a bit heavy of a subject to be glossed over in the film, and wondered what others thought.

Does any DVD internet store have "Tales of the City" up for pre-order yet? (Since the rumour is that it's supposed to come out on the 5th of November)

Further Tales of the City

I just got Further Tales of the City and have to say it is a big disappointment. Two discs, one with three hours of story and one with 2 plus hours of 'special features'. I'm all in favor of special features when they're free but not when you have to pay for them as part of a set. If they wanted to issue a special features disc they should have sold it separately like Matrix did; of course, if they did, few would have bought it. When the original two versions of the story ran for six hours, I thought it was reasonable to expect this one to be six hours as well. Condensing the book into this short a time span meant that too much had to be left out to make for a a very good presentation.

It sort of reminds me of Steam. It was a good idea that suffered from poor editing and a poor screen play. Too many details were left to be filled in from your memory of the book to make for a satisfying end product. I also thought that the episode with Cage Tyler was handled in a pretty tasteless way; this may have been done before QAF but their portrayals are a lot more honest. I'm probably the only one who will feel this way but getting my two cents worth in always helps when I feel I've been cheated.

My partner and I just watched the night before last the DVD for the film BIG EDEN.

Very impressed, not only in the quality of the film, but in the presentation as well. Very lush country scenes, and overall a great experience. You may want to search this title out. (We rented it from DVDovernight.com.)

I saw this when it aired on PBS a year or two (or three?) ago and I agree it's not a worthy sequel. But then, neither is the novel imo... nor the third, after which I gave up on the series.

You implied that the supplements aren't much to get excited over. Are they that bad or are you just unhapppy with the way it was packaged and marketed?

I think he was talking about Further... which is the 3rd installment (I got mine with just the series & no extras disc for $9.99 PVD). The second one was More.... Tales itself has not come to DVD yet AFAIK.

Ah... so this is a DVD only release? Or did it air on broadcast or cable? Same crew and production? I'll look it up. Thanks for the correction! Further... More... Furthermore

The transfer was fine and I don't have any objections to the supplements, I just don't think they're worth $16.00 and would never have considered buying them as a separate dvd. The only way they'll sell it is as part of a set.

There was one other problem. Some people age better than others. Unforetunately, only Laura Linney and Olivia Dukakis seem to be in this group. The men all looked like they had been up all night partying for several years (not that I have much room to talk; but, then, I'm not paid to be beautiful).

I know this isn't film related but I just have to add this comment since this is really only the "gay" forum to say this. I was over at Borders this afternoon skimming through OUT and lo and behold, Dave "MTV VJ" Holmes came out (no wonder I was finding him attractive), anyway, I was really bowled over and it just gave me a smile and definately made my day. Nuff said, back to your DVD's folks.

Straightman & Drift

Just wondering if anybody has seen this movie (Straightman). I read a review that made it sound like a really good film; and I wonder if I'm missing something or if it's really as bad as it looked.

I would like to call it amateurish but it would be a real disservice to amateur filmmakers. It has to be one of the worst gay movies I've ever seen and almost ranks with Plan 9 from Outer Space for bad dialogue and bad acting and directing all combined into one really dismal production.

I got "Drift" at the same time and, while I really enjoyed it, I'm still not sure what the author/director was attempting to say. Would welcome any enlightening comments.

Just watched Metrosexuality - that other U.K. television series. It's done in a very aggressive film style (totally in your face colors, etc., camera moves that border on spastic, etc) but worth seeing. Lots of extras on the DVD, including a few documentaries, a commentary track, music track, etc.

Any one else seen this? Comments?

I recommend this too. I recommended this on another thread. This movie isn;t about sexual attraction its about emotional attraction and knowing and being proud of oneself. Corny at times but great location of Montana and good acting. I was happy that someone thought that gay people can do a romantic comedy without a gratuitous bathroom scene or porn shop scene. One to watch this winter with that special someone and just relax.

Did Strand Releasing re-master STEAM on DVD? The original release looks awful.

I can't confirm, but I think they have rereleased STEAM, but suspect its still awful. I have a 4:3 version that is an obvious transfer of a VHS. I understand they now have a widescreen edition however I doubt that its anamorphic, so its not worth the upgrade for me (especially at the standard gay theme dvd rate).

Would like to have a clean copy of this wonderful film someday.

I have the 'widescreen' version of Steam. You're right, it isn't anamorphic and the transfer is miserable. Strand is getting better, however, I watched Burnt Money last night and it was a very good transfer, also a very good movie, by the way. Surprising that it was made in South America.

hehe, hopefuly they are getting better because of my constant nagging. They've stopped answering me at this point. Burnt Money does look like a good transfer. I'm looking forward to getting it.

Tales of the City now has a 2/25 release date. Same day as QAF: Season 2!
http://www.tlavideo.com/templates/ca...2&v=2&c=2&sn=1

Special features, according to TLA:
Audio Commentary: With Armistead Maupin, Alastair Reed, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and Barbara Garrick
Documentaries: Behind-the-scenes, interviews

At 6 hours, I'm guessing this will be a 3-disc set. TLA has the SRP at $59.95.

Oh, and check this out:
The new DVD release has been altered slightly from the original as performer Donna Summer asked to have "Love to Love You Baby" removed as she no longer approves of homosexuality.
I'm glad her song is gone, since I no longer approve of Donna Summer.
