Kojima Has Mixed Emotions Towards Xbox
Metal Gear's main man says it has the power, but wonders if it will make a difference.
April 6, 2001
In a recent conversation with MSNBC, Konami's Hideo Kojima commented on his team's experience with the Xbox, and despite saying that most of the console's strengths were graphical, the console's considerable power has definitely made an impression:
"You will definitely get better graphics with Xbox. With PlayStation 2, we had to create our own shadows with the software. With Xbox, the machine creates it for us, so we can use that little extra power for effects and stuff. So the Xbox version will probably look a little bit better."
While Kojima failed to get into specifics, the above quote certainly goes a long way towards confirming the Metal Gear title in development is indeed an enchanted version of Metal Gear Solid 2, and a not a port of the PC version of the original, as many publications have speculated in the past.
Despite this praise, however, he continued by saying, "I don’t think that Xbox is that much better than PlayStation 2. Other than little improvements in graphics, I don’t expect much difference." While it remains to be seen how the Xbox MGS X will stack up, we can at least expect some improvements, and to be quite honest, we'll take them with open arms. We'll back with more details should they break.
