I have started playing Unreal Tournament again but now every time I finish a game, it stops working. At the part where you have to hit fire to continue, the "loading" screen flashes up and then returns to the 3rd person view and stays there. The only way to continue playing is to exit the game and restart. It was working fine a few months ago and I have not changed anything that I know of. I tried to uninstall and reinstall and the same thing. I also got the latest patch without improvement. Any ideas?

I play UT nightly and have never encountered this problem... that's why I didn't answer. You can always try to re-install it and see what's causing this problem... but I don't even have a possible solution, sorry

After uninstalling, did you try going to the actual directory and deleting anything left in there?

If that doesn't work, try re-installing your video card drivers and/or directx.

Otherwise, reformat your HD if you're determined to play.

Thanks for the replies. I have reinstalled UT, the latest patch, and direct X drivers. This is really making me mad. I have no idea what is going on. I played it for months when it first came out without problem. I didn't play for a number of months and went back to it the other day. I restarted a tournament and got through 3 levels when it started to happen. Now it does it after every 9 out of 10 games or so. I didn't go through the directory yet so I guess that is my last option short of the HD thing(don't want to lose all my porn)j/k

Anyone else have any idea? I deleted UT and it's folder and it still locks up after ending a match. It doesn't do it 100% of the time now but at least every other time. I have no clue and I am unhappy

So you haven't changed anything? at all?

What version did you use before? A friend updated to the latest #436 and it wouldnt work for him at all. Try http://www.fileplanet.com and see if they have earlier patches. Make sure all traces of UT are gone as well. If you're brave try editing the registry. The uninstall is supposed to do this, but sometimes companies leave small entries untouched.

Just to throw this out there- did you recently install some new software? Could it be a conflict of some kind perhaps?

Have you gone via safe mode and checked your video options?

What video card are you using...any other system specs that might help. What changes have occurred to your system between the time you stopped playing and started up again?

Have you tried a simple scandisk and defrag? So many little hangups can be fixed by this. In fact, you should defrag before you install ANY software, to insure the new files are grouped together on the HDD. Just my 2 cents, but I do know what I'm talking about.

How long are you waiting? What kind of processor/RAM do you have? I've got a 800mhz w/256RAM, and sometimes, when it's loading a big level, I think it's hung up. Then when I'm considering restarting, it finishing loading up the next level. Maybe you're not waiting long enough. The time will vary level to level.

Thanks for the replies. As far as any changes I don't think so other than installing Tiberian Sun since I last played UT a few months ago. I did install the new patch but that was only after I started having the problems so I don't think that is it. I have a PII 400 with Voodoo 2 and 128 RAM. I have waited minutes with no new game loading. It doesn't get stuck on the loading screen BTW. I will hit fire to go to the next game and "loading" will flash up for a split sec and then back to the third person screen. Each time I hit fire it will usually flash up "loading" screen and then it goes back. I have not defraged in a while so will try this.

My advice to you would be to reinstall the game, patches, video card drivers, etc.

Then run Scandisk and Defrag. You might also want to download and run regclean to fix any problems with your registry.

If you are still having problems (and it sounds like you probably will), then hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what programs are running in the background. End task on all of those programs except Systray and Explorer. Start UT again, and see if it happens. If it doesn't, then you will know that one of those programs running in the background is probably the culprit. The way to find out which one it is, is to End Task each program one at a time, until you find the program that causes the problem. Remember to reboot after each time you try this to get all the background programs running again. If you find a particular program that is causing it, then perhaps it's one you can uninstall or you can disable it when you want to play UT.

Also, since you are using a Voodoo 2, make sure you are running the game in OpenGL (NOT Direct3D).

Good luck... and you may want to think about upgrading one of these days.

I would love to upgrade but don't have the money and no game out there yet that I really want that I can't play on my computer( I upgraded to this one b/c of Half-Life). I am running in open GL but does the same thing in software mode. I tried to scan disc and get an error that I can't fix though I doubt it the problem but you never know. As far as looking at backgroud programs, it won't let me Ctrl-Alt-Del so I can't do it.

A little update. I put this on the back burner since I have been busy. I recently tried to play Tiberian Sun and after about 5 minutes of playing, the game completely locks up also. I have to shut the computer off to do anything (ctrl-alt-del does not work). When I scan disc I always get an error that says something along the line of duplicate webpage or something similar and it tells me to go rename. Then it has about 216(Pi joke) numbers and letter as to location. I don't have the specifics right now b/c I am not at home. I can't seem to find this file. I will check again tomorrow and repost but if anyone can make any sense of this tonight, it would help.

I assume you are using Win 98 SE? use the disk cleanup function, check everything for deletion and let it go. Then try scandisk again. That error is related to Internet Explorer web page caching I do believe. clearing out the cache itself doesn't always fix it. running the cleaning utility should. Good Luck!

Played it, didn't like it. UT much better IMHO though not a huge fan of it either. Half-life was the game. Now if we could only get the new Duke Nukem released. I guess I would have to go out and buy a new computer when that happens.

Update: I finally gave up on fixing my problem and haven't been playing games for a while. THe other day Window 98 crashed and I had to re-install it. Tried playing UT today and it works as good as new. I don't know what the problem was but at least now it seems to be working fine.

I fresh install of the operating system and the game always gives great results. Too bad it is such a pain in the ass.
