I read a letter recently on IGN where some guy talked about all these problems with the PS2 DVD playback. He mentioned that there were problems with the lips going out of sync after a hour or so of playback. The Q&A guy said these problems were well known. I have never heard of any problem like this before. I use my PS2 more than my Panasonic DVD player when I'm watching a movie, and have never noted any problem. Has anyone else expierenced any problems with the DVD playback on their system?

Just 2 questions when did you get your PS2 and do you use it vertical(upright with stand) or horizontal. Got mine 1st day at midnight, verticallyon the side and no problems with playback. Also the only sound or loud buzz that comes from mine is the cooling fan on the back.

Maybe I just never noticed a lip synch problem. I'll have to check into that....

I've had the unit both vertically and horizontly and incurred the above problems both ways.
I conntacted Sony CSR and the guy said something like "Let me level with ya, they arn't made to be movie players, there for games, we have had a lot of problems with this." I took that with less then perfect happieness. In other words he was saying "so what?"
I just use a stand alone DVD player now.

Got my PS2 day of release and the only DVD problem I have encountered is "The Cranberries: Beneath the Skin" shows an "unable to read disc" error. American Beauty in DTS had a VERY minor lip sync problem for a bit, but aside from that, no problems.

Actually more people have reported problems with the PS2 in the vertical position. It seems Sony knows about as well......

My PS2 adventures.
First console bought November 10th. The DVD-ROM drive motor burned out in the second week of use.
Took until the end of November to get it replaced and the new one would play games, but no DVDs would load. It just locked up the console.
Finally in the middle of December I got my current console and so far it works, but I rarely use it. The DVD playback is still poor. Many movies will skip for no reason and I had major problems with Gladiator.
Just hope Sony gets the flaws worked out of this thing soon. Maybe a driver update will help, but who knows.

So after my "scientific" investigation I can now tell you this. I have no idea why the PS2 DVD playback is so piss quality. Sorry.
Question to people who have not had problems: Have you been able to compare the quality of the picture compared to other stand alone units? Just curious. Thanks.

I have a system with a PS2 and a Panasonic A105 that uses an S-video switcher to the TV with an optical cable from the PS2 and a coaxial cable from the Panasonic into my receiver, so I can easily compare the two. I feel that the PS2 give a sharper picture and better sound than the Panasonic (which admittedly is so old, it might as well run on steam). While the Panasonic is fine, I really prefer using the PS2, as long as there is no interaction involved as the PS2 remote is a pain.

I have problems playing NTSC American Dul-layer DVDs, but then again, I'm using a first generation Japenese PS2 with a original controler plugged into it with "the hack" code.
Overall though, it plays all my DVDs!
