Ahhhh, one of the great kings of RPG. Who could forget the city of Skara Brae, where it all started. This is another one of those games I spent way too much time with (though I do admit, I spent more time with part 2). This game was a breakthrough for it's time. These are from the days where you sat there with grid paper, mapping every step. That seemed to add so much more, making you feel as if you were actually there. Today's games with their auto-mapping, while saving time, make it much easier to just give up on a game because there is less time spent getting to where you are.
Lets hear your experiences...

Since the game was not in stores, I had to download it... and to get your caracters past level 3, you needed a password to answer a question and we could never get it to work even though we had the right answers... then, one day, out of the blue, it worked... we were like... HOLY F***!! We then leveled up and our playing at level 3 for around 6 months provided something like 5 levels of experience, it was great, we could then finally go and defeat the harder places.
That game had it all, a better selection of weapons and armor than most games these days, killer spells, extrmely hard battles with 900 enemies at a time... it was the best... I'd kill to see another Bard Tale mad with today'S technology.

yeah, Bard's Tale was really something. I remember how difficult I thought it was, and how finding that one piece of armor or leveling and getting that next spell really made a difference. I also remember all those maps -ugh! Traps that turn you around, Darkness!, ugh. Very cool game for it's time! It's probably one of the reasons we have the FF series today.

I loved this game! I had a copy for my C64(of course, everything I had then was a copy). I never played any of the sequels. But this game rocked. I am thinking of getting it again.
I also enjoyed Phantasie.

Had it for my C-64 and loved it, but boy was it tough...I named my party members after friends and girls I had crushes on in high school, so that always made the game much more interesting
Never got far into the game, but it was still fun nonetheless. Don't know why this franchise isn't dusted off for the next-gen systems. I'd love a chance to return to Skara Brae...
