For me...
Tomb Raider 2: I thought the first was absolutely awesome, mainly because of the very atmospheric and ambient locales and level design.....they absolutely killed that in the sequels
MGS: the graphics, story and cinemacy were absolutely fantastic and made the game a joy to experience by themselves, the gameplay was just bad IMO. The control was flawed, the camera much of the time would only allow you to see a few feet in front of you when people from all around would be shooting at you, and the gameplay was very unrealistic, uninspired and somewhat tedious
DKC64: Banjo Kazooie was simply awesome, with very creative level design, fun gameplay and cool puzzles, but DKC64 had absolutely zero of the level-design creativity from BK. Very boring compared to BK....wonder what BK2 is like...
FF8: FF7 was a mind-bogglingly amazing and unique experience for me, but FF8 just couldn't hold a candle in comparison.
That's all I can think of right now.

I was just about to post this!
anyways, in terms of a game i think banjo-kazooie was a bit disappointing, no replay value. no offense to all the sega fans but they disappoint many of their customers with their frequent hardware changes. i mean how many systems can one company really have? for sales im sure the jaguar and the virtual boy were really disappointing for those companies.

From Nintendo - Definitly DK64. It was a great game, and design, but did not offer that "next level" that Nintendo is known for. Specifically since DKC on the SNES was groundbreaking and all.
From Sony Camp - Um, about 70% of the software on the PSX that just gets released abd advertised the hell out of, not because its good, but because there are enough dumb PSX owners that will buy it and actually make it profitale.
From Sega - There hardware. Not that all of it has been bad (Saturn was a bitch to program for), but just the fact that they have only suceeded once in their exsistance. (The Genisis)
The Gaming Industry - The fact 98% of the compainies only exsist to publish "sh%t" titles and make minor revenues. This is of course profitable, and I understand that, but it still blows. The gaming industry need more innovation and less copying of ideas without any improvement.

The fact that the Dreamcast is dead after just 18 months, despite being a wonderful, affordable system with awesome games is really quite stunning. It's just a case of releasing a 1.5 generation system in a next-gen market.
The studio 989 PS2 games are stunningly bad. I know that the PS2 is hard to program for, but this is Sony's own developers, they should be able to do SOMETHING with the hardware. I remeber debating for hours about Gameday vs Madden on the PS, how they bungled the PS2 system so completely, and recieved such a total ass-kicking fron EA is beyond me

For me, it would have to be Daikatana. I had heard all the negative publicity throughout the life of its development, but I was kind of hoping that everyone was bad-mouthing the game without actually playing it.
Boy was I wrong. I was hoping that during the long development time they were actually trying to make a good game. I mean I really tried to like the game. I eventually played all the way through it after suffering through several crashes and stupid design choices which are too numerous to mention, but it was painful.

The Jaguar was a big disappointment for me. I loved my Lynx more than any gaming system I've ever owned, and I was really hoping the Jaguar would turn out to be a success. Like the Lynx, the Jaguar had great hardware, but the software side was even worse...

That looked really bad, even by 2600 standards. In fact, most of the arcade hits looked bad on the 2600 (mainly because we were so used to better graphics in the arcade). The better 2600 games were original creations for the 2600.

Since I'm a huge baseball fan and DC guy, WSB2K1 was easily a huge downer last year. At least Virtua Tennis was out at the same time, and that took away some of the sorrow.....
Hopefully, this year both will be great

Some more to add to my list-
Unreal: It looked absolutely awesome in the previews, but the game was mind-bogglingly boring. The levels were extremely repetitive, linear and severely lacked creativity, the weapons felt extremely weak and lame, and the gameplay was way too slow. Also the netcode was crap.
QuakeIII: basically QuakeII with better graphics. With all the advancements and innovations going on in the pc FPS market, QuakeIII failed to innovate over QII in any way. Even UT blew it out of the water; but at least it's still, to some people, the best deathmatch game out there. Too bad the weapons are really unbalanced because of the rocket launcher.
