Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I’m 7 hours in — unusually little, given that I’ve been playing Yotei near-daily for something like a week and a half — and I’m having very mixed feelings.
It just doesn’t have that “one more mission!” “one more side quest!” “let’s just clear out one more map icon thingie!” quality where I can’t bring myself to put the controller down. (Meanwhile, my wife has logged something like 3 times as many hours into Hello Kitty Island Adventure in the same timeframe. :)) I enjoy the game well enough when I’m actively playing it, and there isn’t really anything I’d grouse and groan about with a scowl and crossed arms. It’s a perfectly fine game that hasn’t managed to sink its hooks into me. Admittedly, Tsushima exhausted me with an overlong first act set in the largest area of the game with an excess of side quests, collectibles, yadda yadda, and I enjoyed it much more in NG+ where I was just focusing on the main story. I get the sense that Yotei is similar in being front-heavy, so maybe I’ll warm up to it more over time (and as I get Atsu to that glorious open world action RPG level of overpowered-dom). I feel like I’ve been moving around the same relatively tiny stretch of the map the entire time because there’s so, so, so, so, so, so much to do. But at this point, I’m kinda wishing I’d started with Shinobi instead or bought the Mario Galaxy double feature. |
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
Part of the problem is I don't like the protagonist at all. Not because she's a woman, but maybe her voice acting. She's kind of snitty, sarcastic, rude. I deeply dislike her vocal work. Maybe I should change to Japanese with subtitles instead? It would be a shame — I think some of the supporting actors are very good in this.
Also her big guilty backstory reveal is pretty dumb -- Spoiler:

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
That was kinda my feeling with the first game. It didn't really hook me until 10-12 hours in.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
You guys are making it easy to wait for a sale.
|
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I played a bunch last week, taking a break to let it breathe. That Takezo fight was insane. I thought I was good at dueling from the original but I had to go down to casual mode for that fight.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
This game hooked me from the beginning. It feels right in line with the previous, and every time I sit down with it, I just want to explore further. All around exactly what I was looking for and I am only 5hrs or so in.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I’ve gotten a little more into Yotei — I think Keeper serving as a palate cleanser helped — but it is kinda funny that after 14.5 hours, the only member of the Yotei Six I’ve killed is the one from the prologue.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I'm 50% done at 60 hours, and I feel like I haven't hit any of the big baddies, but it's just the kind of game I like: Explore the map, find something and take it on, build up my character. I've mostly been improving my gear so there's one major story mission that I've been avoiding, but I'm exploring the north and got a couple new weapons.
Early on, I was so weak that I tried to take out a couple outposts Far Cry-stealth style but failed miserably and had to come back later. I wish there weren't so many achievements tied to cosmetic gear, and some of the parkour courses feel like busy work. Because I suck at combat games, I often die once or twice when facing a new fight, but I haven't had to dial down the difficulty... yet. I played through the original and then again on New Game+, and I feel like this is measuring up. I also just finished AC Shadows and was concerned it'd be too much Japan, but it hasn't been a problem. |
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I almost bought this the other day, then realized this is a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, which I own and haven't played yet -ohbfrank-
|
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
While you should absolutely play GoT, this is only a sequel in the sense that it's made by the same people and takes place in the same country. The stories are hundreds of years apart and have no connection, AFAIK.
|
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
Yeah, there’s no connection that makes it necessary or even desirable to have played Tsushima. That said, if you already have the other, you might as well play that, and if you like it, Yotei may have gone on sale by then.
I finally did the story mission I’d been avoiding, and it unlocked a large new region. |
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
Does the protagonist (Atsu) EVER become likeable? I'm early on but she's a chore to listen to and her cockiness is as off-putting as any asshole character, ever.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I don't have a problem with the character either. She's brusque and bitter, but she hasn't struck me as particularly cocky, at least for someone who regularly engages in one-on-one combat duels.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I'm firmly in the camp of people who can't stand her. Ugh, shut up already. I need to change VO to Japanese I guess.
|
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I finished the game at 87 hours and 100%!
Spoilers related to completion, not to the story: Spoiler:
I really liked the game but feel like the first game was much larger in scope and map (not including the add-on). That's just my impression, though. |
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
It took 22 hours, but I've exacted vengeance against the second member of the Yotei Six, following the one you kill in the prologue. I'm enjoying Yotei well enough, but it's something I only really feel compelled to play for 20-30 minutes a time, and I'm usually the type to get sucked into a game and play for hours on end.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I started this up last night and I think I may regret buying it. Beautiful game, great combat, but I don't know if I'm up for another open world game right now.
One thing I found that I love is one of the special modes you can turn on in the settings. One replaces the standard music with lofi beats created for the game (Watanabe Mode, I think). I know it's not for everyone, but I really like it. Is there a way to turn off the cinematic view while on a horse? I don't need an aspect ratio change and locked in camara every time I ride somewhere. |
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I guess I'm done. I finished a few more bounties, fought Takezo, and have nothing else on the board. I can tell I have one more bamboo strike, a few shrines, some altars, etc., but nothing that feels worth chasing. I'm missing a few puzzle boxes, which was probably from my turning the wrong direction after finishing a mission.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
Got fully sucked into this over the weekend. The overall story isn't as gripping as the invasion in the first game, but it holds up.
Still very early on. I've done most, if not all the side content in the starting two areas, as well as the area for Oni. The parts leading up to and the fight with the guy for Spider Lily armor was so good. |
Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
Is the game's map only the zones that get highlighted when you go to the map zoomed out? If so, much smaller than the first game which is a good thing. Same amount of content in a smaller map is welcome after the slog that was AC Shadows.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
I was really, really hoping that a Ghost of Tsushima sequel was going to focus on Jin becoming a ninja. He had already gone down the path or not being a full samurai... becoming a ninja and the growth of those skills would have been awesome. GoY is a good game, but it's not better or equal to GoT.

Re: Ghost of Yōtei | PS5 & PS5 Pro | 10/2/25
Think I'm getting close to the end. Still have 3 main baddies to take out, but I'm starting to get full completion on upgrades and skills. I think I'm missing something with the painting areas though. Achievement says I haven't done many, but I also haven't found any more to do. Do most of them not appear on your map?
Is the guy you can fight on Mt Yotei some type of super boss? I gave up after about 30 min of attempts. Going to save him for later. Loved the quest and conclusion, calling back to the 1st game which you can do in the final map zone. Edit: Also, fuck this game for making me kill dogs. |

The guy on the mountain was the only battle I wasn't able to stubborn my way through, and I had to back out. Part of the problem was that I had to equip all of his charms to make him appear, but once I backed out, I was able to load my regular charms and refill my sake, and then I took him on again. Agree on killing dogs. At least in Wolfenstein 3-D, they were Nazi dogs, back in the days when everyone agreed that Nazis were bad. |
