Anyone else is a once and done with video games?

I really only got into gaming this year. But I've found once I finish the story once I can't get into it again. I've done one walkthrough of BG3 and Starfield. I loved loved loved every second of it. Took the fastest path to the end which still takes a bit of time. Great experiences. But now I want to move on to the next thing and I don't want to spend too long with any particular game.

I assume that is how most people play single player games. Once I finish a single player game I put it aside and play the next game.

For a lot of games yes, but there are a handful I’ve played more than once.

I’ve played and beaten Uncharted and Uncharted 2 at least twice. I’ve played Arkham Asylum probably four or five times including just recently.

The Mario games I’ve played many times over, especially Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 as well as Super Mario 64.

I'm burnt out after finishing most games. Stardew Valley is one of the few games that I've played through multiple times. I usually start a new farm after there's been a free content update.

I guess the Reddits are an oddity because everybody can't wait until the 1000th walkthrough.

I feel like some games can be “comfort games” a person goes back to over and over. Kind of like movies or whatever. You’ve seen them over and over but still enjoy their familiarity.

Probably also depends on the type of gamer you are. I like video games but I would say more casually. I’m rarely there to play the latest and greatest.

I still pick up new games but like the other thread Oldboy made was discussing I often go through bursts. Sometimes I play a lot and it happens to be a new game other times it’s an old game or there are periods where I don’t game for a long time.

A huge part of gaming I've enjoyed is the hype. I love being there at 5:00:00pm PST booting it up with everybody else. I want the newest and greatest. And between Gamepass, EA Play Pro, and the occassional purchase, it's not even that much. I love the anticipation, the first hour, the first day, the first week, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Discord. Love love love the hype and connecting with other people playing the game.

That is most likely specific to BG3 which is an outlier since it is all about choice and playing multiple times to get different outcomes. Most single player games that isn't the hook.

And Starfield, tons of people have done 10+ walkthroughs of NG+ already.

Re: Anyone else is a once and done with video games?

It’s not super-common but not unheard of for me to replay a single player game. Most of the time, it’s something relatively short.

Games I’ve replayed over the past few years:

Kamen Rider: Memory of Heroez
Bayonetta
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
The Last of Us (admittedly a new version of the game)
Super Mario 3D World
Saints Row: The Third
Ghost of Tsushima
Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo: ODST
Halo: Reach
Halo 4
Halo 5
Super Mario Galaxy
Spider-Man
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Gears of War
Gears of War 4

Ratchet and Clank is a series I’ve replayed a bunch of times, although weirdly, I haven’t gone back a second time to the latest one yet (although my wife has!).

But as far as finishing a game and immediately starting it over again…? Semi-recently, just Kamen Rider: Memory of Heroez and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

From the original post I assumed she was talking about people replaying games over and over right after you finishing them. If you are talking about years later replaying some games then sure I've replayed classic Nintendo games or some of my all time favorites.

"Playthrough". A "walkthrough" is a guide that gives you step by step instructions through a game.

Re: Anyone else is a once and done with video games?

I mean some people are in stages of their life where they can replay something over and over again. I barely have time to play things the first time so yeah I'm not going to revisit something right after I finished it. Years later, sure.

It's also why I don't rush through something "taking the fastest possible path" if I'm enjoying it, though.

I’ve been playing Heroes of Might and Magic since since 1999, so no.

Though to be fair, if you rig every game so you can't die, lose a battle or fail a challenge, is there really a fundamental difference?

I think I averaged 5 hours of gaming a year.

I only play games once. The exception would be occasionally a New Game + (Borderlands), or a complete overhaul/remaster/remake (Final Fantasy 7, Destroy All Humans).

Yes there is.

That would be a breezethrough.

Re: Anyone else is a once and done with video games?

I typically don’t do new game plus or a second play through of a game. I might start playing again later down the line (like with Fallout games and Skyrim) but I never complete a game more than once.

A lot of the time me playing a game again consists of starting over because it’s been a very long time since I played and I have no idea where I am or what the controls are anymore. Most recently I did this with Death Stranding. I tried Elden Ring a second time and I thought “what’s the point?”

Only game I can think of that I played through more than once is Knights of the Old Republic and that was once on the light side and once on the dark side.

Re: Anyone else is a once and done with video games?

Haven't played games in a while, but I had started replaying games on high Difficulty . I LOVE games that allow you to keep Level Up and Items from previous plays. This adds a lot of replay value. Also, games where you have different paths you can take like mentioned above in "KOTOR" also add replay value. I'm a huge fan of the Dead Space Series so I've replayed them and will replay them again.

But these days who has time?

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 10:48 PM.
