Oxenfree 1 and 2, multiplatform, now.

Oxenfree 2 just got released today and I got interested and was surprised to find you can play them both for free on Android and that it's the first internally developed Netflix game. The app asked me who was playing and I got to select my Netflix profile. I didn't know Netflix got into games. Why would anyone pay when they can play this for free.

Wow, saw this available for pre-order at a discount in the PSN store, but yes, free is much better.

All three consoles, PC, Android and iOS. I'm very surprised 2 is free on mobile (I'm assuming iOS is free also).

It's a simple question of would you rather pay once and get everything or deal with microtransactions on mobile. It's not completely free.

Edit. It looks like it's free if you sign in and have a Netflix account. Otherwise, it's not.

The first one is two bucks on Steam right now.

What are the microtransactions? My phone's always logged in to Netflix so that's why it was seamlessly free for me ($4 a month with Tmobile).

I have no idea but the apps on iOS mention there are paid add-ons. I don't know if that just means "free if you have Netflix; paid if you don't" or that there's actual microtransactions like a normal mobile game.

From what I've played it's not a microtransaction game, it probably just means Netflix. It's a point and click graphic adventure game.

Edit: Yep.In-App Purchases

It could just lock content behind a paywall rather than microtransactions. Download for free and get the first chapter or whatever at no cost, then you have to pay to unlock the rest. I've seen that with a lot of mobile games so they show up as a "free" download from the app store.

Also, FWIW I don't see 2 on iOS.

Edit: So it looks like the "Netflix" edition is newer and only needs the sub to get the full game. Apparently it was a stand-alone release before, which was just the beginning for free, then paid for the full game.

Looking at the bottom of the iOS product page on the web, it's just needing a Netflix subsctription.

Here's 2 on iOS

Strange. 2 didn't come up in the search for just Oxenfree in the app store. Regardless, glad to hear about the game. I'm downloading the 1st since it's full with Netflix.

Re: Oxenfree 1 and 2, multiplatform, now.

From reading about it, it's 4 hours if you just do the main story and 6-7 if you get everything, and it takes at least 2 walkthroughs to get the two main endings since the second walkthrough gives you things if you have played at least once, and then 5-6 walkthroughs to go through all the main options.

I spoiled myself the whole story and plan to do a few walkthroughs. Sometimes I enjoy it more if I know what's coming.

Yes, it's a Netflix game. If you have a netflix sub you have access to this and a bunch of other games (including the excellent Into the Breach, Kentucky Route Zero, Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and others). It's something I don't think they do a good job of promoting all that much:

I think Noonan is wrong about microtransactions. I don't see any. It's the full game, right?
That is what Wario 64 indicates.

We figured it out. The "microtransactions" on mobile is simply needing a Netflix paid account to get it.

Before it was a Netflix game, it was still a free download but only the beginning, with you needing to pay to get the rest.

Re: Oxenfree 1 and 2, multiplatform, now.

Yeah, there are no microtransactions. You need Netflix to play it on mobile free (and there doesn't seem to be a paid mobile option without Netflix, in that case you go to PC or consoles), which is why it shows in-app purchases.

Wow. I've been missing out. Time to check all of those out! Although I got 20 hours or so to go in this game.

  • Unlimited access to more than 50 exclusive mobile games.
  • Included with your Netflix membership.
  • Download on Android phones & tablets, and iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
