I'll probably get flak for these but this gen had a couple early hits with Immortals: Fenyx Rising and Deathloop. I bailed on both. They felt like what you'd expect from early gen games, only popular because there's nothing else to play but people want to buy something for their fancy new console. In the end, they'll both be forgotten much like launch titles from other consoles/generations.

The one that still stings the most is LJN’s X-Men for the NES. Released at the peak of my X-Men fandom — there was an episode of a Nickelodeon game show I was on around then where I talked about my love for those comics — it was the first video game I ever asked for as a Christmas gift.
It was so early in my time with the NES that I’m not sure I knew video games — at least not “new” ones — could be bad. (Admittedly, the second NES game I ever got was Othello as a Valentine’s Day or Easter gift, and I can’t say I enjoyed that at all, but I looked at it more as a bad choice rather than a bad game.) The biggest disappointment in modern gaming that I can remember is the generally beloved Arkham City. I was a massive Arkham Asylum fan, and I was so hyped for the sequel that I took the day of release off work. And I hated it. Hated, hated, hated, hated it. It’s a rare game that I hate-played, outraged that I paid full price for a new release and refused to feel like it defeated me or whatever dumb thought I had going through my head at the time. I really dug the intensity, atmosphere, Metroidvania style design, and just everything feeling so tight and focused in Asylum, and City felt meandering and bloated. The Black Ops 7 campaign is the most recent out-and-out disappointment I had; I asked for it as a Christmas gift before I knew it would be so bad, although I certainly knew by the time I unwrapped it. As far as a recent game I was surprised to be so disappointed by, Star Wars Outlaws would make the list, especially since I waited until after it was fully patched before buying in. The reception by that point seemed pretty positive, but alas… |

State of Emergency sucked the wind out of me for Rockstar back in the PS2 days. However, they have seemed to recover, for the most part. 😉

GTA V (original XB360 release)
Resident Evil: Requiem Alan Wake 2 (what a dud) |

If you hated Arkham City, I can't imagine what you would have thought about Arkham Knight. That game was an unmitigated disaster. And I loved City.

I thought Knight suffered from some bizarre design decisions (like the overuse of the Batmobile and most of the boss battles being in vehicles) but was a generally okay-to-pretty-good-I-guess game. I think City setting my expectations so low probably softened the blow.

The last Saints Row game was trash... I believe it killed the franchise, too.

I didn't realize at first that this was a revitalized thread and was going to say "Crackdown" again, but I already posted that five years ago.
I loved Fable and Fable 2 and can't remember a single thing about Fable 3. |

Halo 2. It felt like you were building up to this big final mission and then the end credits started. Game is a lot of fun, but the ending was abrupt. Especially since we had to wait three years for the sequel.

Borderlands 4…I loved 1-3, only played a little of pre-sequel, but can’t get into 4. I just get killed all the time. It’s annoying. The guns, the shields are so bad for me, I can’t get passed lvl 11. I keep trying and it’s just not the same. I’m very disappointed. Sure, I’ll try a few more times, but I dunno.

Any COD that came after Modern Warfare 2 (2009).
