Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

https://kotaku.com/konami-announces-...ini-1835430762

Six titles have been announced so far for North America/Europe:
  • R-Type
  • Ys Book I & II
  • New Adventure Island
  • Ninja Spirit
  • Alien Crush
  • Dungeon Explorer
The Japanese version, meanwhile, has an almost entirely different set of games:
  • Bonk’s Adventure
  • Dracula X
  • The Kung Fu/China Warrior
  • Ys I & II
  • Super Star Soldier
  • Dungeon Explorer
Interestingly, Ys and Dracula X are CD-ROM games, meaning we could be seeing more titles not just from the Turbografx-16, but the TurboGrafx-CD as well.

I'm guessing that it's maybe a given but I hope Keith Courage is included as well.

Odd choice for a mini-console. I always had the impression the TurboGrafx wasn't that popular over here.

It wasn't. It's more of a cult system that people got more into the more people realized how good it was.

I'm hoping for those two as well. If this also includes games from the CD system, also would love to see Sewer Shark. Turn and burn, dog meat.

I have fond memories of KC but I haven't seen or played it since back when it was current. Very possible it's just nostalgia. But I recall it being a fun game for the pack-in game with the system.

They released it here late and it was ugly... when the PC Engine was originally released in Japan it was competing with the Famicom. I remember playing Nectaris at my friend's house and being just blown away.

Did Konami buy NEC or something? Weird that Konami would announce this.

I had to look that up, apparently Konami just bought the rights to the TurboGrafx and that gave them ability to make this.

Re: Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

OOH! It better have the Neutopia games! those were some BAD ASS zelda clones!

Kid Courage was a weird one, it was the pack in, so everyone got it, I think... from what I recall it was kind of a split game ... 1/2 the game you play as this kid and the movement is hella lame:

And the other half of the game you transform into a robot or something, and that part was pretty fun:

I just remember the "kid" parts being so bad they were hard to slog through to get to the robot parts.

Re: Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

You mean Keith Courage? I was a big fan of the cartoon it was based on (well, really the toys the cartoon was based on) so I liked the game. So many Japanese IPs hidden in the early console games, like to this day I don't know why they didn't just call Last Battle as Fist of the North Star.

I have fond memories of the console itself but I don't think I have enough fond memories to buy this. Maybe if they redid the portable one and it didn't suck up batteries like crazy. Bring on the Saturn mini or the Dreamcast mini and I'm there day one, though.

Re: Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

Keith Courage was great. It just wasn't the right choice for a pack in game. And alot of people forget but the PC Engine rivaled the Famicom in Japan.

Re: Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

I had a TG when I was younger mostly because I wanted Splatterhouse which I thought looked like best game ever (it wasn’t). I had a few other games but it was pretty forgettable system so I may try it again if these are readily available.

I remember the system getting hyped a lot in the early days of EGM, but I never saw the system or its games in any stores where I live.

Re: Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

I remember a good bit of hype, but then in it's last days there were stacks of them in the stores being marked down.

I actually bought a used one several years ago and a few games, but we downsized a major part of our game collection and that went with it.

My wife would prefer to emulate old games like this, but to me there's something about the little console and the controller that are part of the experience.

The lack of Legendary Axe I - II, Splatterhouse, Dracula X, Keith Courage and Magical Chase is odd.

Re: Yet Another Mini Thread TurboGrafx-16 mini coming

Oh, wait, I misread that. you ALSO get the japanese games (I thought that was the list for the japanese version of the console):
  • Akumajō Dracula X Chi No Rondo (Castlevania: Rondo Of Blood)
  • Aldynes (SuperGrafx game)
  • Appare! Gateball
  • Bomberman ‘94
  • Bomberman Panic Bomber
  • Chō Aniki
  • Daimakaimura (Ghouls ‘N’ Ghosts - SuperGrafx game)
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
  • Gradius (Nemesis)
  • Gradius II – Gofer No Yabō (Nemesis II)
  • Jaseiken Necromancer
  • Nectaris (Military Madness)
  • Neutopia
  • Neutopia II
  • Ninja Ryūkenden (Ninja Gaiden)
  • PC-Genjin (Bonk)
  • Salamander
  • Snatcher
  • Star Parodier (Fantasy Star Soldier)
  • Super Darius
  • Super Momotarō Dentetsu II
  • Super Star Soldier
  • The Kung Fu (China Warrior)
  • Ys I&II
*edit ... er ... maybe not. Kotaku mentions there being 50 games, but re-reading that I THINK that is if you buy the different versions? I really can't tell.

Kieth Courage is actually a licensed game in Japan (heck the giant robots) so I'm sure it was too expensive to license from Sunrise.

In addition to the 24 English language games, the US version will also have the 26 Japanese language games:

Japanese PC Engine games:
  • Akumajō Dracula X Chi No Rondo (Castlevania: Rondo Of Blood)
  • Aldynes (SuperGrafx game)
  • Appare! Gateball
  • Bomberman ‘94
  • Bomberman Panic Bomber
  • Chō Aniki
  • Daimakaimura (Ghouls ‘N’ Ghosts - SuperGrafx game)
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
  • Gradius (Nemesis)
  • Gradius II – Gofer No Yabō (Nemesis II)
  • Jaseiken Necromancer
  • Nectaris (Military Madness)
  • Neutopia
  • Neutopia II
  • Ninja Ryūkenden (Ninja Gaiden)
  • PC-Genjin (Bonk)
  • Salamander
  • Snatcher
  • Star Parodier (Fantasy Star Soldier)
  • Super Darius
  • Super Momotarō Dentetsu II
  • Super Star Soldier
  • The Kung Fu (China Warrior)
  • Ys I&II
There is significant overlap so their claim of 50 games, while technically true, is disingenuous. I won't knock extra games but I will note that this is like the laziest way for Konami to implement this. I mean, the first Bonk is in Japanese only. A game like Snatcher will be impossible to play without a translation.

This also seems to be an amazon exclusive.
