Best and worst looking video game consoles?

What do you think are the best and worst looking video game consoles?

I always liked the look of the Nintendo 64, the original PlayStation and the Wii U, but never really cared for the look of the PlayStation 2.

I will never understand why Nintendo gave the USA the squared off purple and gray SNES instead of the sleek Super Famicom.

The black WiiU is a very nice piece of hardware that goes well on a media shelf with other components.

And I will always hold the GameBoy Advance SP as Nintendo's highpoint of handheld design. Folding clamshell and backwards compatibility with backlighting. Just perfection.

Best: Sega Saturn.

Worst: NES 2. Ugly design overall, plus those large carts (which were designed to be concealed by the original "toaster" model) look ridiculous sticking out of it.

Worst: Original PlayStation and Xbox

Best: Atari 2600. The faux wood paneling is

Thinking about this some more, I wonder how much the controllers should be considered, if at all. The N64 isn't a bad looking system, but I find the controller to be kind of ugly. I agree the Super Famicom looked better than the SNES, but I don't think the button colors on the SFC controller work as well as the SNES button colors.

Best, Dreamcast (black) or the original Xbox (green translucent Halo edition)

Worst, Gamecube

I actually liked the GameCube. Probably my favorite.

I'm the opposite, I think the Super Famicom is ugly as hell and much prefer the look of the Super NES.

Overall I think Nintendo has the best looking systems (except for the Wii). I'd probably toss in the Xbox 360 Slim in the good looking camp.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don't like any of the Sony designs or the other two Xbox systems. The PS4 is borderline. It's sleek but it's still kinda bland.

I think the Switch is the coolest looking console in quite awhile.

My favorite is the Indigo GameCube.

I think the appeal of the PS2 and PS3 depends on how you orient them. They look better vertical and seem to be designed that way. When you place them horizontal, the top part overlapping the bottom looks a little weird, but it makes sense vertically.

Thanks for all of the replies. Does anyone know if the Super Famicom had the same problem where it turned noticeably yellow as it aged like the Super Nintendo?

bluetoast 12-23-16 05:09 PM

Re: Best and worst looking video game consoles?

I have a Super Famicom, and it's not yellow now. That's just one example, but I don't think it necessarily had that issue. On another note, you can get sealed copies of DKC 3 in Japan for $5. I guess those really didn't sell.

Re: Best and worst looking video game consoles?

Yeah, you can unfortunately find pics of Super Famis that discolored the same way. No idea if it was as common, but it did share the problem.

Lots of white Sega Saturns turning yellow now, too. :(

Sub-Zero 12-26-16 04:05 PM

Re: Best and worst looking video game consoles?

Thanks for the info. With Super Famicoms discoloring like that as well, Nintendo must have received quite a few shipments of improperly mixed plastic from their suppliers during production of the Super Nintendo/Famicom. The odd thing, at least with the Super Nintendo, is that usually only part of the system discolored like that, so clearly not every batch of plastic was improperly mixed when they were manufacturing Super Nintendos/Famicoms.

The original NES is a classic. Fairly simple but I've always liked how it looks. Nintendo 64 is nice too. The Xbox 360 Elite is nice as are the original Xbox One and the One S. I never really cared for the original fat model PlayStation 3. Just kind of an ugly looking system due to its odd shape.

In 1993 it fit right in on the AV rack.

Re: Best and worst looking video game consoles?

Forgot about the Panasonic 3DO!

1. SNES (American version)
The cleanest design for a home console. The perfect balance of sophistication and fun.

2. White XBOX ONE
Very sophisticated looking and goes well with IKEA furniture.

3. Sega Dreamcast
Probably one of my favorite looking controllers of the 32-bit+ generations. The spiral logo and the primary colors for the buttons were a nice touch.

4. Turbo Grafx-16 (Korean)
http://nfggames.com/games/vistar/unit1.jpg

This thing would be my all-time favorite designed system ever.

5. Wii
Black or White version, they improved upon the vertical PS2 design and made there's look way better and even the controllers looked sleek.

WORST

1. NES
Lots of great memories with this system but it's ugly. Would have looked better had they been brave enough to make it a complete rectangle shape. The playful simplicity is refreshing compared to the Sega Master System which has diagrams printed on it's face. But having this system in the living room isn't even retro-attractive IMO.

2. XBOX
Man, this system was big and ugly.

3. Nintendo 64
I never liked the way this system looked. Consoles were looking more serious, and being CD based helped that perception, and here was Nintendo making their system look and feel like Duplo blocks. It felt like a toy you toss in a box with your old He-Man figures and castles.

4. NES 2
Instead of improving on the original design they made it worse. The Genesis 2 wasn't as distinctive as the original but it was sleek and centered. This thing though was just bad. At least it functioned bette than the original though.

5. PS3 (original)
Looked reminded me of a George Foreman grill. The way it's bloated in the middle just makes it look weird.

All other console designs I love, even the wood grained Atari 2600.

Re: Best and worst looking video game consoles?

The white Xbone S is sexy as hell, that would probably get my vote for best looking. The original Playstation would be up there too.

I sense a pattern emerging. Like I said about the black WiiU, if it can easily fit in with other AV gear, that just seems to be nicer. We also have one of the re-designed PS3 units, with the curved top and the side-sliding hatch cover. It also looks very nice on our shelf.
