Looks like Nintendo likes money after all.

Nintendo Bringing Back The NES Classic In 2018

https://kotaku.com/nintendo-bringing...018-1803771394

Due to incredible demand for the upcoming Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo plans to ship the retro-inspired product into 2018. Originally, shipments were announced to cease at the end of this calendar year.

In addition, more units of Super NES Classic Edition will ship on its Sept. 29 launch day in the U.S. than were shipped of NES Classic Edition all last year, with subsequent shipments arriving in stores regularly. Fans have shown their unbridled enthusiasm for these Classic Edition systems, so Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves.

The Super NES Classic Edition system features 21 legendary Super NES games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid. Launching on Sept. 29 at a suggested retail price of only $79.99, Super NES Classic Edition plugs directly into the TV using the provided HDMI cable, and comes with two wired controllers.

Next summer, Nintendo will also bring back the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system with new shipments. More information about the timing of the return of NES Classic Edition will be announced in the future.

NES Classic Edition features 30 classic NES games such as the original Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong.

Nintendo now states they're planning on bringing back the NES Classic next summer:
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/...n-next-summer/

My guess is that the SNES Classic and NES Classic use basically the same motherboard, so they'll continue SNES Classic production until demand starts to die down, then switch the line back to NES Classic and build up a stockpile of units to release in the summer.

Makes sense, I was wondering if they would bring them back in some form or even some sort of yearly limited release thing.

I hope all the scalpers sitting on their stacks of these lose so much money. I want to taste their tears.

They should have just kept shipping the NES instead of rushing on to the SNES. I can't see a lot of these casual buyers wanting the older system after its successor has already been available. I certainly wouldn't.

I really hope this announcement does fuck over those Ebay scalpers and leave them with unsold stock they have no use for.

If I can walk into a Target, Gamestop or Walmart and see a few units in there without having to go through hoops like standing in line at the butt crack of dawn or needing to be at my PC at a certain time, I may consider getting it. Same with the SNES classic.

I doubt they have any plans at all to re-release the NES. They're trying to smooth relations with the people they fucked over so they'll buy a SNES.

Why wouldn't they want to re-release the NES Classic? They know that there's still demand there, and they know that by announcing its return now, even though it's months away, people will be willing to wait instead of turning to the bootleg systems.

They have between now and next summer to sell them. And they'll still make a profit on each of them.

Nintendo CHOOSE to make limited quantities of a highly in demand item. They're still the biggest assholes in this situation.

Let's hope we get longer cords and a second controller packed in.

There's two controllers and the cords are longer.

https://www.polygon.com/2017/6/30/15...essions-photos
The SNES Classic will come with two wired SNES Classic Controllers in the box, and the system will also support both the Wii Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro...

Nintendo made the cable a bit longer this time around — it’s about 5 feet long, whereas the NES Classic Controller’s cord was only about 2 1⁄2 feet long.

Oops, sorry, yeah, got confused between the two threads.

I guess they could revise the NES Classic on re-release. I can certainly see longer cords, but if they add another controller to the box, they may increase the price.

Hard for me to believe that. I don't think they'd come out and say it and then not re-release it at all.

Now the actual quantity of the re-release...

Isn't this the same company that said they'd keep producing the NES after they had already run out of supply?

Is this because they fear the SNES isn't going to sell otherwise? C'mon now. If anything maybe the scalpers back off a little on the SNES (doubtful, but possible) which can only be a good thing.

Nintendo said they were working to "increase production" in February 2017:
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ne.../1100-6447463/
Kimishima addressed the NES Classic Edition shortages, apologizing to consumers and retailers alike. The executive added that part of the reason why it's taking a long time to replenish stock is because "some parts require time to procure." Kimishima added that Nintendo is "working to increase production" to meet demand.
The abruptly discontinued production in April, still shipping out units that month. I think it was revealed at this time that Nintendo had originally planned to only produce/ship through Devember 2016:
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/201..._north_america
"Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."

"NES Classic Edition wasn't intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans."
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ni.../1100-6449668/
Regarding the supply issues, he said the Classic Edition was only intended as "a product for last holiday," noting that Nintendo "added shipments and extended the product for as long as we could to meet more of that consumer demand."
So there were apparently periods where maybe they halted production while waiting for parts, but Nintendo never said "we're still making them" after they had stopped. Instead, they had announced their intention to stop while they were still making them.

Interestingly, almost instantly after announcing they were ceasing production of the NES Classic, rumors started circulating about the SNES Classic:
http://fortune.com/2017/04/19/ninten...assic-edition/

Keep in mind that many think the the SNES Classic is basically the NES Classic board with new software and a new shell. So if Nintendo stopped the NES production to use the same production line for SNES Classics, they've been stockpiling SNES Classics since April. Most likely they'll halt SNES Classic production shortly into the new year, depending on demand, and then shift back to producing NES Classics. This is probably why the NES Classic re-release date is the vague "next summer" at the moment, since its exact re-release date will depend on the demand for SNES Classics and thus when Nintendo can halt production on them.

Well, the announcement that they're drastically increasing production of SNES Classics is what will cause scalpers to back off.

The announcement of re-releasing the NES Classic isn't likely to affect many scalpers at this time, but it could have an impact of those selling bootleg copies of it. I think there's quite a few that would be tempted to buy a bootleg device if they felt it was their only way to get one, but could be willing to wait until next summer to get a legit one, especially with the SNES Classic to hold them over in the meantime.

Well, I'm happy to wait to buy the NES Classic first before I decide to purchase the SNES Classic. But my resolve may break down if I see one of the SNES Classics in the wild.

Clever wording broken down above aside, I think there's a slight difference between that particular misinformation to the consumer and the mention of it here. Talking about it now really does nothing for them, so if they had no intention of selling it again I don't see why they would even bring up that black eye.

Just a heads up, Woot! is going to have this as an app exclusive today beginning at 5pm Central. They haven't talked numbers, but expect it to sell out quickly.

I'm not even sure how they got any at all since it's not going back into production until next year.

It'll be interesting if the re-release will have updated firmware with some of the fixes and such from the SNES Classic, and whether owners of the current NES Classics will be able to update theirs officially.
