My buddy passed along a Sega Genesis to me that someone had given him and I've been enjoying the retro gaming action. I always liked the pad controller on the Genesis, but I also picked up this baby...

...which is a really excellent, arcade-worthy joystick.

I've been playing some Sonic and Final Fight 2 mostly. Anyone have favorite games from the Genesis?

Jurassic Park on Genesis was a great game. I loved that you could play

The game supposedly learned your moves and would avoid them if you did them enough times.

My favorite was Toe Jam and Earl and Quackshot.

I loved my Genesis. I think I still have it in my garage along with 20 or so games.

I remember in college when I barely made any money, I would pick up new games a few times a month.

This was the 1st sports game I ever picked up



and then EA upgraded the engine and I picked up this the following year, which brought me many hours of gaming enjoyment




Those were the good old days. Looking back, being a poor college student and making barely minimum wage, I wish I didn't spend so much money on Genesis games. $59.99 for Genesis games for a guy barely making $5 per hour back in 1995 was fucking super expensive.

My Mom got so frustrated with me playing games that she made me pack it up when school was in session. I was a very lazy college student my first couple of years.

Starflight was the best. Also Warsong.

You sure they were that much? I thought the $60 price point was introduced with the 360/PS3 games.

They were $50-60 give or take. When they were on sale, you could get them for around $40-45.

I remember distinctly cartridges weren't cheap.

I paid $80 at Best Buy for Chrono Trigger (SNES) when it came out in '95.

The Sega Genesis will always be my favorite system. I played more NHL Hockey than all of you combined.

I have fond memories of the Genesis, which was my first console. some of the games I played a ton:

DeCap Attack - still one of the most bizzare games I've played, but fun too

Bubsy (yes, I enjoyed it)
Sonic Spinball - never made it past level 3 or so
Toy Story - this was actually a damn good game

I bought my Genesis after renting one along with NHL Hockey. The first game didn't have the players names, but it had their numbers. I would keep the stats on paper

I played the crap out of it and followed with NHLPA 93, NHL 94 and 95.

Famous words heard by my best friend and I during that era: "One more game?".

I think Strider was what sold me on the genesis. Amazing game for its time.

I never had a Sega Genesis but I played the heck of it with NHL 94 at a friend's place. I always wanted to play Altered Beast and Golden Axe as I had a Super NES.

I fucking hated this game. So much. The SNES cover and tv spots sold me but I fucking never hated a game from that era as much as this one.

Herzog Zwei was all kinds of awesome.

I still have my original Genesis hooked up to an old TV in the basement. Every now and then I even pick up a new cartridge for it at the Goodwill. For my money sports games are still more fun to play on that system than any that came since.

There were SNES/N64 games that were $80-$100.

I remember Sony went with the CD format for the Playstation because CDs were so much cheaper to produce than cartridges. Nintendo got a lot of hate when they stuck with the cartridge format with the N64.

I was sure there was a couple games for SNES that were over $100 here(in Canada).

I never get worked up about the cost of games now or DLC, as it seems like one of the few things that hasn't changed, or is even less expensive. Plus, when I was buying those Genesis and SNES games I think I was making like 10 bucks an hour. Now I make a bit more than that

Yeah, adjusted for inflation those $50 PS1/PS2 games are more than $60 in today's money. Also adjusted for inflation those $80-$100 SNES/N64 games are just plain ridiculous. $100 in 1995 would be equivalent to $156 today.

I loved the Genesis too. We had one instead of an SNES which a lot more people seem to love but my family and I had a lot of fun with Genesis in the day.

Off topic a bit but I see there's a crate type monthly box for classic games called Video Games Monthly. Basically you choose a package you want (you can get three, four, five, or ten games depending on what you choose) and select the systems you want games for and they'll send a random selection. They offer NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Gameboy, and Gameboy Color games and they're to keep once you get them it's not a rental service. I decided to give it a try.

I never had a Genesis myself, but played frequently at friend's houses. I remember playing Mortal Kombat and it having red blood versus the SNES versions. Also loved their 6 button controller for Street Fighter, and still love that layout today which is why I liked the fight pads when SF4 came out.

The fatalities were also heavily censored on the SNES version. I remember Sub-Zero's fatality in the arcade and Genesis port was that he ripped the person's head off and the spinal cord would be seen dangling and dripping blood. In the SNES port, that fatality was completely changed. In the SNES port, Sub-Zero would just freeze the person and then shatter them bloodlessly. I think the other fatalities were changed too, but that's the one I remember most.
