Mine may switch to Halo Master Chief pretty soon

As it stands right now, it's a toss up between Alien: Isolation and Destiny.

However, Halo: The Master Chief Collection might win the title if Microsoft can't get the matchmaking working anytime soon.

In what possible way is Alien: Isolation the most disappointing game of the year?

Re: Your most disappointing game of 2014?

The whole year has been pretty disappointing for me. Just not my year for games I wanted. That being said I pose the following tie:

Destiny - the beta was so fun. Who knew that was pretty much the whole game? And the whole "real game begins at level 20" crap is horseshit. I think I was around a 16 when I quit playing. MP always felt very unbalanced and annoying. The loot system was anemic and laughable compared to Borderlands. The gear, generic and not worth pouring hours into it.

Mario Kart 8 - The beauty is only skin deep. It's a gorgeous game but Nintendo removed any semblance of skill moves and dumbed down the game to toddler levels of idiocy. MK64 remains the last great console MK game. RIP Mario Kart, you're dead to me.

And that is 50% of the games I bought this year. Mordor and Infamous are/were a blast.

Most disappointed that Star Citizen didn't launch this year, but as far as an actual game that was released, I'm going with Destiny.

So much potential, but the game is just a grindfest for weaponry that ultimately doesn't matter in the context of the campaign. I made it to level 25 and ultimately pulled the plug from boredom of repetition.

Yeah no kidding. When that game is at it's best, I've never felt more unnerved and scared to move forward playing a video game. It has it's faults for sure, but it would easily make my top ten of the year.

If I was making a top 3 disappointing games of the year list, it would be: Destiny, Watch Dogs, Alien Isolation.

That game refuses my love every step of the way.

Destiny may be dull, but I found Evil Within to be fundamentally broken and practically unplayable.

There was no way this game was going to come out this year, not with all they're building. I don't even think they're planning a 2015 launch either. We'll probably see parts of Squadron 42 though, since it's being released in 10-mission episodes, but the persistent universe is 2016 or later.

I'm almost to the point of rage-quitting The Evil Within, but did we think it was going to be an amazing AAA experience? I don't remember much of the hype for this one, so I'm not sure what peoples' expectations were.

This was my first Donkey Kong Country game, and...errr, it'll probably be my last. Even though platformers are pretty much my favorite genre, I'm just not at that skill level anymore. :) I think I gave up on the second world.

I like Donkey Kong a lot, but haven't loved a game since DKC3 on the SNES. DK64 was pretty bad, and I didn't care for any of the subsequent games on the GCN and the Wii. I guess the originality left the series when Rare stopped developing the games.

Is TF that bad, or just disappointing? It's been on the top of my list for games to get since I just got my Wii U because the reviews were a little more kind. I am having a hard time justifying the $60 price-tag, though.

As far as I knew, they were hyping it as a "next-gen RE4" - that sets the expectation bar pretty fucking high.

No, it's a good, solid 2-D platformer, it's just really tough. Actually, if you're not obsessive about collecting everything, it's not that hard to just get to the end of each level. But it can be very tough/frustrating if you're trying to get everything.

Why, though? I need details because I'm stumped. To me it's not only the best game of this year (so far) by a mile, it's probably the best horror game ever made.

The pacing is all wrong. The game is padded. The cut scenes remain broken, which really kills the immersion into the story. My time spent with the game has become "make it to two save points, then play something else".

I'm kinda with Chuck on that. It's pretty cool that someone finally made a functional Ailen game, but I don't really enjoy playing it -- even as a horror game (a genre I admittedly don't really dig).

They released a patch earlier this week that was supposed to fix the cutscenes. I haven't played it since then, though, so I can't verify. Agree with the padding, but that's a minor flaw that becomes less problematic with subsequent playthroughs (I've completed it 4 times now). Completely disagree about the pacing, but ok.

Re: Your most disappointing game of 2014?

I second the pacing comment. The first few hours were thrilling, but the game becomes repetitive pretty quickly. There's only so many times I can be scared while getting killed by an alien or an android. I went from being thrilled with the game to being bored within the span of a few days of playing it.

Despite running at 1080p/30, I also felt the game "lagged" on the Xbox One. Not input lag per say, but it didn't feel as responsive as some first-person games I've played on this next-gen.

If there's a recent patch then I need to check that out. The first alien encounter was so disappointing because the cut scene was moving like a flip book.

Honorable Mention:Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel for being last Gen only.

I don't know what previews you were reading but I never saw any that said it was a next gen RE4. I saw a couple saying that it was Mikami's first game since RE4 but that's all.

I don't see anything wrong with the pacing of the game. The middle part was kind of long but I constantly found myself being nervous because I was afraid of encountering the alien. The biggest gripe I had about it was it did get boring when I was constantly doing the same sections over again because the alien kept killing me over and over again.

Are you kidding? Almost every preview I read said how it was at least tonally just like RE4, and wherever they didn't flat out say it would play like RE4, they at least inferred it. Many saying it was the followup to RE4 that we wanted, but didn't get, from 5 and 6

FWIW, Tropical Freeze debuted at a lower price point than usual -- $50, rather than the traditional $60 -- and Amazon currently has it for $41.54 shipped. If you're interested in the game, the price is right-ish.

The review at Kotaku said something like "this is a game you play in inches", and that seemed to sum up my reaction pretty well too. For some people, that's a plus. For me, just not what I'm looking for in a platformer. I'm all for challenge and precision, but Tropical Freeze is just...brutal.

Destiny. SO repetitive it was beyond ridiculous.

oh I know this, but as a nearly day 1 backer, I keep hoping every year is the year. I'll settle for S42 next year.
