Someone installed Doom on a printer

To show off how hackable a Canon Pixma printer is, a hacker exploited the web interface to install custom firmware, including a playable port of Doom:

The game plays from the printer's color LCD screen. It's not perfect, as it has to work within the limitations of the printer, but it works. You can see a video clip at the link below:

Canon might have a good marketing opportunity - bundle weapon upgrades with the ink cartridges.

People should be using this kind of brain power to cure cancer or kill ISIS. This is a waste of time and energy.

So is posting on a DVD enthusiast forum, yet here we are.

Very cool - I love these kinds of hacks. Useful to demonstrate vulnerabilities and fun at the same time.

Didn't he do this in order to expose dangerous security vulnerabilities in the equipment? It's one thing to do this sort of thing in order to exploit people. It's another thing altogether if it's being done to educate.

I'm going to tell my wife to stop surfing Facebook, her time could be better spent curing AIDS.

And before anyone asks, yes my time on DVDtalk is part of my research to prevent frostbite on testicles.

Re: Someone installed Doom on a printer

Now someone has gotten Doom to run within Doom (technically the GZDoom engine):

That's cool, until some one gets the version of Doom that runs inside Doom to also play Doom inside it. That'd be cooler.

Must have missed this thread originally. Both hacks are pretty cool.
