Most overrated video game console?

Re: Most overrated video game console?
Was there anything I said that wasn't constructive criticism? I like the console, I do, but it's overrated right now. Most overrated? For me, yeah, but I wasn't lucky enough to own every system known to man all these years. I'm only 32 years old.

The PS4 is barely nine months old.
A lot of the changes Microsoft Xbox One has made are due to its constant monthly updates, something that Sony has failed to capitalize on (I guess that's where Microsoft is succeeding as they're primarily a software company).
Its too early to say if the PS4, Xbox One, or the Wii U are overrated. We can't really make those judgements until the next-generation.
If anything, the Wii U will be looked as a disappointment (NOT overrated) and the jury is still out on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Re: Most overrated video game console?
Even though I loved the Dreamcast, and I usually hear nothing but praise for that system, it didn't last that long or have that big a library of games. So I would consider that overrated. Still, Shenmue and Resident Evil: Code Veronica were some of the best video game experiences I can remember, and the system had too much potential for it to end the way it did.
The game consoles I'm not a fan of like the N64 and the Wii seem to have a lot of criticisms justly levied against them so I wouldn't consider them overrated.
Oh yeah, the first youtube Atari commercial looks a lot better than the XE thing.

While Xbox would end up blowing it out of the water in that regard, the full power of Xbox Live really wasn't achieved until the release of Halo 2 in 2004... which was a year away from the launch of the 360.

Brack makes interesting points about the PS4. I still don't think it's overrated (again, WAY too soon for that). Objectively botched, sure. But not overrated.
Also,
at 7 new-gen votes. Beautiful.

I can't believe the people voting for the Dreamcast ever had one. It wasn't the most successful console for whatever reason (I think it got swept up in the tidal wave of Sony) but it had a number of great games. Go play Chu-Chu Rocket and tell me the system was overrated. Like some others, the Wii probably wins this in a cakewalk. Disregarding that system, the first Playstation was overrated. People seemed to go crazy for 3-d polygons and lame rendered content when it hit, but most of the play mechanics for PS1 games are kindergarten stuff to what we had on prior systems.

I voted PS4 for almost identical reasons as brack. It's without a doubt the most current, overrated machine.
If we aren't counting current gen (why is it in the poll?) then it's a toss up between the GameCube and the Wii. Both pieces of crap with terrible controllers and maybe 1-2 good games

Re: Most overrated video game console?
The 2600 was revolutionary in it's first couple of years, but the reason I picked it was for the latter majority of it's period of home console dominance, from '80-86 (in the US). By 1979 it was clearly outclassed by the Intellivison, and later the ColecoVision, but it got by on it's cheap price, large game catalog, and because it's what every other kid on the block had.
A lot of the 2600's catalog was pure crap, even by the standards of the day. This included a significant number of official titles and the majority of 3rd party titles which Atari could not control. This flood of bad games was in part responsible for the video game sector collapse in 1983. The US game market didn't recover until the NES launch in '86, and from that point the console market became completely dominated by Japan for the next 15 years.

But, your point is well taken and I wouldn't begrudge you that opinion, given the way the home video game market played out in the mid-80s.

I'd add Donkey Kong Country Returns to that list - one of the best platformers on any system, in my opinion. But yeah, not much beyond that on the Wii.

Re: Most overrated video game console?
Current gen consoles are absolutely fair game IMO.
You might think the PS4 doesn't have the quality of exclusive content to justify how impressively it's selling, or you might have whatever issues with the network or interface. You might think the XB1 is an unmitigated disaster of vision and design that had no business selling to 5 million people. You might think the WiiU's games aren't as great as people seem to think they are. That's, well, just like your opinion, man.
Granted, we don't have the benefit of knowing exactly what the future holds for the current gen consoles, but they are absolutely capable of being "overrated" at this point in time, and they all probably have a more loyal following than they deserve.
Wii dominating the poll, as it should. But I could also make a case for it being underrated.

I'm not much of a gamer anymore, but I voted Wii because of how quickly it went from being the coolest thing in the house to a paperweight collecting dust. It was the only time I ever played a brand new console and felt like gaming took a step back.

PS4. I like it, think some games look great, but exclusives aren't that great so far. That and the fact that so many people bought it because of so much unwarranted negativity toward the Xbox One (how I wish I had the option to not have to insert a disc to play the game, but that's not happening).

The interface is probably my favorite since we've started having dashboards. Everything is on a single screen. No tabbing left and right to find shit (xbox, wii, PS3) and no drilling down menus either (PS3). It's all just right there. I'm amazed how they managed to pull it off really.
I thought X1 didn't either. Am I remembering wrong?
DS4 is a great controller. No argument there. As for battery life, I toss mine on a dock like the WiiU every night. Battery life has been a non issue for me. Would it be nice to get 80 hours like the WiiU Pro? Sure, but with a dock it doesn't really matter. Also, if you have more than one controller it's really a non issue.
"Other than the games look great." That's a huge selling point when selling new hardware. Not sure why that's kinda swept under the rug in your post. People drop a half a grand on a new system and some games, they better look damn good. And when they look better on one console over the other, it's a pretty damn big selling point. I'd say the CD/MP3 thing is the only real 'problem' you listed, and even that one I'm kinda with Sony on. I have a bluetooth speaker I stream music from my phone with these days, why do I want to boot up the whole media center to listen to some MP3s? Also, you complain about having to use X1 discs but want to use CDs?
Gotta call bullshit on that one. Other than that it's not really a mystery why it's selling well. There could have been a few more 1st party titles this year, but it's not like the X1 or WiiU have blown any doors off the hinges this year either.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do feel like I got my money's worth. There were just enough good games to keep it hooked up and played from time to time.

Agreed. I was just saying that I could, in good faith, make a case that the Wii isn't as bad as people think it is. I deeply enjoyed at least 20 games on Wii, and most of them were exclusive.

Gotta love how my opinions about a particular system has turned into yet another "console war" discussion. I already made my points perfectly clear, and I'm not the only one in the world who had these complaints. I could also add other complaints too, like horrible looking video quality for video game trailers. It's kind of sad I have to go on my laptop or Xbox One to see a decent looking trailer for PS4 games.

At least there was a decent attempt by Brack at defending the PS4 choice, unlike "XBone because XBone" or the Wii U votes
I don't really see a problem voting for current gen consoles, but for the most part I think any "overratedness" of them is from people getting too caught up in each console's loud supporters since they're getting the most current publicity, of which all 3 systems seem to have (which even this forum has seen first hand).

Re: Most overrated video game console?
This is a message board. People are free to debate. Rebuttals don't automatically make it a console war. It's pretty civil in here.
Lousy third party support, horrible online, forced motion, WM+ late and no support, SD, disappointing Virtual Console, no traditional controller support (CC wired to wiimote sucked), no unified accounts & purchases tied to the console, so yeah, it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
I'm just saying the library wasn't as anemic as everyone makes it out to be. I think the misconception comes from the fact most of the good shit came out in the first few years while the last couple years were abysmal.

PS1 in hindsight has crude polygon graphics but there were so many classic game franchises that started on that system, or continued on that system I don't see how it can be overrated. Metal Gear, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill are some examples.
I thought the Dreamcast was an awesome system but if I never had one but later played it after reading about all the nostalgia and high marks internet posters post about it I think I would be just slightly disappointed.

Did I just fucking read the Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy franchises started on the PlayStation?
Yeah, the Nintendo and Super Nintendo were real pieces of shit that three franchises failed so horribly on them it took the power of Sony and the PS1 to really have them take off.
