I don't know, I thought Splatoon looked phenomenal. It felt like golden age Nintendo. A completely different take on shooters.

Big deal, sure. Not what I'd consider a 'megaton' though. Not sure if anything would classify this year. Un-bundling the Kinect would have been a megaton if they held that news, similarly removing the paywall on Live.

Not a whole lot of new IP at this point from Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo.

Did we watch the same conferences? For shits and giggles, courtesy of some googling and by no means comprehensive:

MS
Sunset Overdrive
Ori & the Blind Forest
Scalebound
Fantasia
Project Spark
Inside
Quantum Break (not shown but known)

Sony
The Order: 1886
Entwined
Let it Die
Bloodborne
ABZU
No Man's Sky

Nintendo
Splatoon
X
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker *
Yoshi’s Woolly World*
Hyrule Warriors*
Mario Maker*

CrossPlat:
Destiny
Lords of the Fallen
Dying Light
Evolve
The Evil Within

That's two dozen new IPs(and not even listing a bunch of the digital games). Seems pretty solid to me.

*Spin-offs and not technically new IPs?

I don't get the hype for Mario Maker. They've had these for years on PC I'm not saying that as a way of 'PC is Master Race' Any modern PC can run the Mario rom hacks.

That's still not a whole lot.

I've seen Mario rom hacks, but not any easy to use level creator. Regardless, there's a big difference from some hacks that a few hundred or thousand people might have tried on their PC from an official major release directly from Nintendo. There's no comparison at all.

And in a time where user generated content is a big deal for games, I think this is great. Especially appealing to the nostalgia of Mario Bros fans.

Just looking at what Sony showed (minus the indies) that's 6/19 or 30%. Seems decent to me.

psst... Minecraft is kind of a thing right now. Level building is in. Now all 3 companies have their own(Spark, LBPlanet, Mario). Mario makes the most sense though with the Gamepad.

Don't forget Trials Fusion. Some of the user-created content there is great!

MS conference abridged from Matt Lees (formerly of VideoGamer.com):

Assume Nintendo/Sony will be up soonish.

Trying waaay too hard. He should edit the next ones (Nintendo/Sony) to about 1/3 the length.

Not a good impersonator either.

It's very much in keeping with the "abridged" videos he was doing at videogamer.com last year, which a lot of people enjoyed, so I thought I'd share. Here's the 5 abridged conferences from last year for reference:

Impersonator? Do you really think he's trying to do impressions???

I'm not sure why anyone would be "impressed" with Ubisoft's showing of Rainbow Six. That video was total bullshit and the final product, if even in production, will look and play nothing like that. They should have just shown a title card and funded six indie games with the money they spent on that CG lie.

He's changing his voice for every person because he's not trying to do impressions? Yeah, that makes sense, and is hilarious.

Was that a concept video? Ubi titled it as "gameplay" on youtube.

Genuine question, because it looked pretty interesting to me.

Re: The Official 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo Thread

Yeah, I didn't think that was MP gameplay, was it? That doesn't make sense considering how scripted it was. Otherwise the game will not play like shown.

I guarantee you it's 100% horseshit. If and when that game ever comes out it'll look nothing like that. A pre-alpha multiplayer match? Okay.

I'm a little bitter after the Colonial Marines debacle, so this kind of stuff really pisses me right off.

chess 06-11-14 09:44 AM

Re: The Official 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo Thread

The first words in the video (after the ESRB card) are:

"The following is pre-alpha footage captured from a multiplayer match"

Obviously everything was scripted, but that's pretty normal. Unless Ubisoft is lying, it all played out in-game.

And all of the button prompts were from a keyboard, so I figured they were using a high end PC

Yeah, that's fair, but Ubi puts out quality product, so I wouldn't quite paint them with that brush.

The destruction looks awesome, if it's remotely legit.

It's probably just using in-game engine to render it with scripted gameplay is all, or it's some sort of co-op objective-based multiplayer mode. It isn't that visually impressive.
