Re: The official Thief videogame thread

Destructiod and Joystiq both gave it more favorable reviews than IGN. I'm still excited to pick it up this week.

Ugh. Looks like a Redbox rental for me.

Damn. As much as I enjoyed Dishonored I was really hoping this would be way better. I'll be curious to see what normal gamers think about it once they have it in hand.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

I've finally figured out the optimal time to send back a Gamefly game in order to get the new releases as they come out. I'm getting an XO version of Thief tomorrow in the mail. Will post some impressions after that.

After watching the streams and reading comments from people who've played it, I'm not surprised that reviews are middling. It seemed a lot like Dishonored but with uncreative level design, absolutely awful AI that frequently wouldn't detect the player right in front of them, and of course lacking the supernatural powers that made that game fun.

I LOVED Thief: the Dark Project
Thought Thief 2 had some good, some bad
Didn't really like Thief 3: Deadly Shadows

Noticing a trend, I wasn't expecting much from Thief 4

As a huge Thief fan, I have to pick this up regardless of the reviews. I think that Deadly Shadows wasn't liked by critics, but I still enjoyed it.

I thought Thief II was the best, followed by Deadly Shadows, and then the first game.

Did you download the HD mod?

http://www.moddb.com/mods/thief-gold-hd-texture-mod

Was wondering how hard is it to install? I might hold off on the new Thief and play the old ones. I'm a Thief virgin

This got a pretty positive review from Gametrailers. They gave it a 7.5 and IMO they have the best reviews by far.

Oh now that's something I could get into. Playing old school Thief this weekend.

Agreed. The first game was awesome. The second game was also great, but not as good as the first. The third game was developed with the Xbox console hardware in mind, and it really showed. The third game was very watered down compared to the first two. I still liked the third, but it was nowhere near in the same league as the first two.

Although my favorite mission for the whole trilogy is the Shalebridge Cradle from Thief 3.

You thought Deadly Shadows was better than The Dark Project?

I'm really eager to hear user reviews for this. My only reference point for this kind of game is Dishonored, which I finally got into this weekend and am fiercely addicted to now. I'll be curious to see how this game compares to that experience.

I did. As far as fun value.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

I finished up Chapter 1 and I like it so far. It's been a good while since I've played a stealth game so it feels fresh to me again. One thing I really wish was that I could play in 3rd person like Skyrim. There doesn't seem to be an option to switch.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

The lack of 3rd person view is a point of contention with some fans, though the game does shift to 3rd person when Garrett is climbing certain vertical surfaces.

I watched an entire LP of the game over the last couple of days and I would say the game is exactly what you would expect from a modern Thief update. It looks good, but doesn't add much in terms of gameplay or story. It's not the breath of fresh air that the Tomb Raider reboot was to it's series, but it doesn't do anything major to ruin it either. The LP I saw was just over 4 hours long. Even though the player rushed the second half quite a bit, it still seemed pretty short to me.

I played the first chapter as well and I love it. Makes me want to play the other games again.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

I'm into Chapter 4 and I'm enjoying it much less than I was at the beginning. It now feels very linear and more like an action game. Playing through the Thieves Guild story line in any TES game is more enjoyable, IMO.

And why the hell do I have to re-jack open windows to leave after I break in to a house. The lock is already popped!

Didn't realize Target got steelbook versions for PS4 & XB1. If the game had gotten better reviews, I probably would have checked it out.

I hate that, too. Or not knowing which houses I broke into before. One place I cleaned out, and knocked out the guards. I came back later and not only were they all awake again but engaged in the same conversation as before.

I bought this with having no real knowledge of the history of the game... it's unopened so I think I'm just going to return it. Bummer.

I'm to chapter 4. Not loving the game, but not hating it either. I think it deserves the critics ratings at about 7/10.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

One guy on Amazon claims that the problem is that the reviewers aren't playing the game properly. He says you should play with no kills and no knockouts. Sneak past everyone.

Current average score is 3.5/5.0.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

I think "you're not playing it right" is weak sauce, but I will say that one of the best aspects of the game is the customizable difficulty options. It reminds me of driving games where you can really tweak the difficulty to the game you want to play.

One of the youtubers I'm subbed to started playing this role playing as a reformed kelpto and not stealing anything he isn't forced to by the game. I thought it was a pretty funny take and a perfectly valid play style. If you turn on the no upgrades/no equipment difficulty options there's not much point of money anyway. His comments were filled with people saying he wasn't playing it right and after a few episodes he got fed up and quit the game.
