I don't mean sequels. Last of Us is basically a rehash of Resident Evil and Infinite is a narrative FPS like Half-Life.

Is there really a game that isn't in some what? Narrative adventure, Survival Horror, Narrative FPS, Action Platformer, Sex Simulator.

I'll bite. There's only one non-sequel in the poll. Other than tLoU, which other isn't a rehash?

I spent more time with GTA V and The Last of Us, but I enjoyed Tomb Raider most of all 4 that I played (haven't played Super Mario, though).

The Last of Us owes a lot to both Uncharted and Enslaved.

I...that doesn't even...what? No. Just no.

The quote was "rehashes of games from previous generations." There were no Bioshock games in previous generations.

Spiritual successor, they really did turn out being pretty different.

Yes, yes it does. It's true, it's oh so true.

Absolutely, but I don't think anyone in their right mind would call it a "rehash" of either one of those titles.

Care to elaborate? Other than the fact that they are both in third person and have zombies (which some of the Resident Evil games don't even have, by the way).

The gameplay is pretty much the same to me, except RE had puzzles. To me, gameplay is king.

I voted on Bioshock, but I am halfway into Black Flag and right now I am seriously blown away by this game. I was so disappointed in Creed 3 that I am really just shocked how good this is. Still early, but I think Black Flag deserves to be in the talks.

Just realized I didn't even say what my favorite of the year was - Rayman Legends - and not only was it a sequel, but a rehash as well!

Re: Game of the Year - 2013

I voted The Last of Us, but it, Bioshock Infinite & GTA V were neck and neck for me. Just below them, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, R&C: Into the Nexus and Saints Row IV are pretty much dead even. I'm surprised there aren't more games in the poll, as there are definitely more than those 5 that people could make cases for. And while I enjoyed Tomb Raider a lot, I still don't get the degree to which some people love it. I guess Far Cry 3 was still fresh in my mind and I thought it trumped TR on both gameplay & world, though not on story.

I'm updating my selection to A Link Between Worlds. Hands down; nothing else has come close.

I'm actually gonna have to third this sentiment (and this is from someone with both next gen consoles right now).

Ah. I figured it was a typo. You meant GOAT then.

I want to believe that a Zelda game is in the discussion, but I've never finished a handheld Zelda despite owning and starting Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Minish Cap, and the two Wind Waker sequels on DS.

Re: Game of the Year - 2013

To be fair this thread was started with SpikeTV's GOTY nominees in mind. Of all places to start a discussion I'm still unsure why a TV station's list carries more weight than an actual gaming outlet. This list is essentially the Game of the first 5 months + Mario list. Of course, those 5 games are the easy picks, but by no means the only picks.

I want to start a separate DVDtalk's GOTY thread(with a half dozen more or so options) in a few weeks and do it up right.

Re: Game of the Year - 2013

I was a bit disappointed in the new Zelda, it's the third time this year that I've agreed with the lower scores on popular titles which is odd. 3D effect worked really well on it though. But I also wasn't salivating at the thought of more Link to the Past.

Zelda is completely and totally awesome. It would be my GOTY. Last of Us is a very close second.

Sounds like Zelda is really tickling that nostalgia bone. :)

whoa. Across all generations/platforms?

Can you summarize why you feel that way? (I saw the perfect in everywhere). But anything else?
