Seems like it would be tough to estimate given variances in rumble between games and in MS's case the variances between AA batteries.

Speaking of, I always liked the idea of replaceable batteries, but in application, they are kind of a pain in the ass. The reality is that I wear out PS3 controllers faster than their internal batteries. I keep meaning to buy battery packs for my Wii controllers, but I never remember, and I'm always fumbling around trying to figure out what's charged and what isn't.

First world problems.

Microsoft has convinced me to continue to enjoy my 360 and game backlog for at least a year after release to see how things shake out. I'll decide on PS4 or Xbox One no sooner than that.

Have either console announced HD audio format support? Dolby Digital is so last gen :) I know some Sony titles support 7.1 PCM, but it would be nice to see them take advantage of it more now since both are using blu ray discs now.

Re: What console are you buying at launch? (Post MS180 Edition)

^ encoding game audio on the fly and doing bitstream passthrough may be possible, but why bother? If they can send 7.1 PCM, then that's equal in quality to DTS-HD MA or DD TrueHD.

Re: What console are you buying at launch? (Post MS180 Edition)

No, that's what I'm saying, I'm totally OK with 7.1 PCM, but only Sony (and only with a handful of games) took advantage of that. I'm pretty sure the Xbox 360 was only capable of Dolby Digital, but now they should be able to do 7.1 with the Xbox One, correct?

Re: What console are you buying at launch? (Post MS180 Edition)

Oh, yeah. They should be able to do it, but we'll see if it gets utilized. I thought you wanted DTS-HD MA. :)

Great post from CheapyD:

I don't follow him on Twitter, or listen to his podcast, just check the website for deals (duh!), but I thought that was really well written.

I just can't believe the NeoGAF thread.

Indeed it is.

Not bad but

If this THING that doesn’t exist until several months from now is so horrible and offensive, DON’T BUY IT.
We didn't and MS relented. That's the benefit of the internet and kinda the point. A product doesn't have to exist for consumers to condemn it before release.

It's silly to get up in arms because people voiced their opinion and spoke with their virtual wallet this far in advance. Sure we're just dollar signs to them, but when those dollar signs start jumping ship, they sure as hell sit up and took notice.

Also it may not have been "anti-consumer" in the strictest sense of the term, but it certainly wasn't consumer friendly.

I wish he shared his amazon sales numbers.

It was customer friendly in their vision of the future of their product. They just neglected to share that vision with us.

Probably should have included the entire paragraph instead of just that one sentence...

Beyond the massive Microsoft PR blunders, what really baffles me is the extent of the anger Microsoft stirred up with the Xbox One.
I’ve seen many people irrationally accuse Microsoft of trying to obliterate gamer's rights and destroy gaming, for basically emulating what Steam, a beloved PC download service, is already doing.
On NeoGAF, there is a Corporate Apologist Games "Journalism" blog list highlighting those who haven’t come out vocally against a console which wouldn’t exist for 6 months.
I’ve had people curse and threaten me on Twitter because I haven’t condemned the Xbox One to the depths of Hell.
Are we forgetting that the Xbox One is a consumer electronics product?
If this THING that doesn’t exist until several months from now is so horrible and offensive, DON’T BUY IT.
It’s great to give these companies feedback on their products, but personal attacks against people who may not share your worldview on electronics is completely ridiculous.

I'm amazed that the N64 launched at $199, while some games went for $79 for the system.

And the 360 & PS3 prices given are for the more expensive skus that were available at launch. The 360 had a sku without a hard drive for $299 and the PS3 had the 40GB system for $499.

Still an awesome chart though, especially counting for inflation.

I was leaning towards a PS4 at launch, but decided to talk to a friend. I knew he had just returned from having hands on both new systems, and I wanted to see what he thought now (even though he's getting one of each free).

I was surprised that he was more enamored with the Xbox One, but mainly because of the TV/Cable intergration with the system. A feature I'm not really psyched for, as I don't see myself turning the Xbox One on every time I just want to watch TV. He did say that the switching between playing a game, exiting to watch TV, then going back to the game was really seamless, and fast. The other standouts for him were Watch Dogs, and Dead Rising 3 which he says looked amazing.

I still currently have a pre-order on both systems, but can only grab one at launch. I wish I knew the release date of the Xbox One, although I don't know that a week or two earlier/later would make a difference.

We should put up another poll about a month or so before the first console launches, just to see if things have changed. I think a lot of people have switched over to Xbox One since we initially did this poll.

Eventually I'll likely get them both but I think I'll start with the Xbox One.

The rules in the Doritos/Mt Dew contest say it's "targeting late November".

If you read my comments in both threads based upon my hands-on experience with both consoles, I gave my PS4 pre-order to a friend and am sticking with the Xbox One.

Microsoft not only had better content they were demoing, but both Activision and EA had us playing their games (Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, and Titanfall) specifically on the XO. Sony gave us their B and C-list titles play (either F2P or games designed specifically for the PSN) and the only other developer who had PS4s with them was Activision with the latest Skylanders game. The games Sony brought with them for the PS3 (Beyond Two Souls, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Diablo III) looked better than the games I saw on the PS4.

I really wish I got to play Titanfall. All of the comments I heard post-expo were people saying it might be the game of the year for 2014. :(

I'm still confused on how Sony focusing on exclusives for the PS4 and PS3 is a negative, while MS focusing on third party games that will be on both systems is a positive. :hscratch:

Because they were playable, although the games that were shown will be identical when released

Unless early reviews show that games run better on PS4 or something, I'm getting closer and closer to canceling my PS4 preorder. Recently I've been having the feeling that it's going to play out the same way as the PS3 launch, at least for me. I'll definitely still pick one up in the future, but nothing at launch makes me feel like I need one for the first 6 months or so. I just hope they still have the store set up so I can grab the free PS+ games until I get one.

Shu Yoshida confirmed that this would be the case. I'd say you're safe to cancel.

Neither. I'll start deciding which one I want around this time next year.
