Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I like the idea of off loading the processing needs of a game on a big console while playing it on a handheld, makes it convenient, but the novelty wore off pretty quick.
I know I've mentioned it a few times but I am really hoping the early speculation of Sony's Gaikai services comes true. If they can pull off a OnLive meets Netflix streaming function where you end up basically paying $20/month for a massive back catalog of PSX, PS 2 and PS3 games I would buy that console and pay for that service in a heartbeat. |

And I don't find my 360 or PS3 less effective at playing games just because of the other things they are capable of. |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
Your're wrong. Each system has been less effective at playing games than the last. Most of us are on our 2nd or 3rd 360s/PS3s, and yet all my consoles from 15, 20, 30 years ago all still work. More complicated systems, more moving parts, more bog.

Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
Yeah but they'd be that way regardless, pumping out those graphics were destined to create heating issues.
I should be happy my PS3 60gb still works, but that just shows how little I used it, and it's loud as fuck. (Mostly use it for Netflix, but stopped that once I got my Roku) alas you're talking about two different things. The Xbox 360 wasn't less effective because it let you use Netflix and Windows Media Player, it was less effective because it was poorly designed. The PS3 similarly was one of the first widely available devices that used bluray, and was rushed out the door to ensure the Xbox 360 gap didn't get too big. These devices strictly as gaming devices were flawed. Last gen was a rush job, and while the hardware ultimately turned out great, it wasn't ready at launch. The Wii U did the same thing this gen. |

My biggest fear with the "connect to online once a day" is the possibility of bricking the console with some software push or new virus. I generally never connect my 360/ps3 online. |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I seriously don't think it'll wind up being once a day, but who knows. I figure at worst it'll be like Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud with the monthly check-ins. And thanks for the tip, I'll try that out.

Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I forgot all about Gaikai. That and the Vita integration is tipping me to a PS4, since I already own a Vita and love it, and would like to have more uses for it.

Sony focused solely on games and gamers, they showed a bunch of interesting IP, and every feature they talked about was something that sounded interesting to me...particularly Gaikai and Vita. In contrast, almost every feature MS showed made me think "Cool, but I don't want it and wouldn't use it." I'd compare a lot of that stuff to Siri on my iPhone. She's kind of neat, but I'm pretty sure I'd look like a douche if I ever actually talked to her. I think my initial disappointment in the PS4 reveal was based on the fact that they didn't show the PS4 hardware, but in hindsight, I'll take the strategy of saving the console for E3 and doing a press conference for gamers over saving the games for E3 and doing a press conference for everybody else. |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I'll be getting One day One. I'm skipping the PS4. No exclusives I care for to make it worth getting that system. I'm hoping I can use it as my DVR to record TV shows and not use the DVR in my DISH receiver.

Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
Will be in probably about 1-2 years down the road for the XO, have plenty of backlog and guessing good ol' GTA5 will take care of a good 4-6 month chunk alone of gaming time.

Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I will get both Next-Gen consoles when they launch later this year, as long as money is available and the launch isn't crappy.

Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I'll get an Xbox One, probably whenever the first bundle comes out.
|
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
Isn't the push for the restriction on used games likely coming from the publishers? If so, the PS4 will have something similar. And if it does, I'm likely to go WiiU, Vita and 3DS.
Gaiki is promising though. |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I'll eventually pick up a PS4. My random thoughts.
I just replaced my PS3 last October when the previous one died. It was either wait one year without a system, or buy a new one at that point. So if anything buyer's guilt will delay me a year. I'd rather wait a year anyway to let the price drop, and maybe let any self-destructing first models get out of the way. The early games will have had price drops too. I think the PS3 graphics are beautiful and although I know they're a few years old now, I could care less about an improvement. We're just going to get the same games anyway. Just more titles of existing franchise name plus a cool sounding word. Like God of War: Amalgamation or Assassin's Creed: Coagulation or Call of Duty: Special Dark Operation Grey. |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I'm waiting it out. I will most likely get a Wii U when it comes down in price and the really good Nintendo exclusives start coming out. The PS4 looks promising, but I don't see getting one for quite a while. And Xbox One... well, we all saw the press conference.
Right now i'll just stick to my PC and the consoles I have. |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
All 3, except the Wii U. Because I can.
|
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
All 3? There are only 2 Next-Gen... what is the 3rd you are referring to? Steambox?
|
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
Picked up the Wii-U already though its mostly a virtual console machine for me. The new Xbox isn't appealing at all. PS4 is a possibility in the future, but I'm sure the launch price will keep me away for a couple of years.
|
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I'll get them all because its still my main hobby. That being said, as a collector, the X-Box One is definitely only going to be used for exclusives.

Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
Sony is making Remote Play support mandatory for developers unless the game requires Eye.
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/29/ru...tory-with-ps4/ That is awesome and Sony, in my eyes, has just beaten Wii U's only worthwhile feature, and if it doesn't have the same DRM lockdown as the Xbox One, it is looking like the winner in my book. It also just made me decide to not sell my PS Vita (which I like but don't use much). |
Re: Next Gen: Are you in or out?
I've got 2 360s in my household, a Wii and a backwards compatible PS4 60gb. I think its a launch unit, but I didn't buy it at launch.
I'll likely replace one of my 360s with a One at launch. My other 360 will probably be replaced a year or so later. I'm keeping one 360 for Rock Band and older game play (XBLA and 360 games I haven't gotten through yet). |
