Yeah, I feel like VR's biggest hurdle as of now is getting people to give it time of day.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

Recently looking into the VR units on sale and having a little hands on experience with some games it has really increased my interest level significantly. I have been looking at the Oculus Quest and as i have no experience at all with VR units had some questions, if anyone can provide an insight.

1. Is the price justified?
2. Is this just really for games or can you watch movies on this as well? Are there any full VR movies? How is it watching a normal movie on a VR unit?
3. Can i transfer files from a PC to the unit or will games/movies download directly onto the unit itself? I always prefer being able to drag and drop onto equipment as it seems faster. Plus i have a big movie library on digital already.
4. What is the comfort of the Oculus Quest? The unit i used briefly was not this one.

The one thing that worries me is that the unit will be obsolete in a short amount of time. I had thought that VR would probably explode when the PS5 comes out and hold off until that time, but the more i see of demos and games the more i am feeling the itch to pick one of these up.

So worth buying now or should i wait?

You can watch movies on the Quest, though I have not done so myself so cannot speak on the experience.
You transfer the movies from your computer to the Quest to do it.
It is a little front heavy, so the comfort level could be better.
I do think it is worth the asking price, athough there isn't much available for it at this point.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

That's all a tough call. I broke down and ordered a Quest last night despite the fact I already own a Rift (The "VR game streaming" from my PC has me intrigued and I wanted to help a platform I'd like to see continue) but I don't know how good/bad it is yet.

Price isn't bad regardless, but I also think there'll be a renewed push come PS5. But good god do they need to nuke the Move controllers.

Edit: On a side note, if you're looking for a 64gb Oculus and want to use Paypal Credit (no payments for 6 months stuff), just order it direct from Oculus. They said Jun 14th but mine shipped the same day.

I was similarly on the fence, mainly considering a PSVR. I had demoed an Oculus Go and was pretty impressed at that time, but thought the single controller would be limiting. Once the Quest came out my interest was piqued and I tried unsuccessfully to find a demo locally (Only one Best Buy in my area had a demo unit, and it was by appointment). I finally just pulled the trigger. Is it already out dated? Of course, but so is every piece of technology you buy, there is always bigger, better, faster around the corner.

Aside from Vader Immortal (which is all kinds of awesome with some real vertigo inducing set pieces) I have been playing the heck out of Rec Room Paintball. While graphically simplistic, it feels like I'm actually playing in a physical location where I can duck and peek around corners.

I say just do it. I bought i locally from a place with no restocking fee, so If I didn't like It I could return it without having to deal with shipping.

I did end up with the 64gb version (even thought he 128 was in stock where I bought it). It's strictly for games. If you plan to load movies I would suggest the 128gb. There are already methods to sideload games into the Quest as well.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

What is it like liked watching a normal movie through these? Very curious to know. Also are there any VR movie experiences already for purchase? I was thinking the potential is incredible. You could sky dive, climb everest, swim the great barrier reef. I mean sure games and shooting is great, but VR opens up a world limited only by the imagination.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

Most movie experiences are pretty short still but there are some cool YouTube ones as well (check out the one from Disney's The Jungle Book from a couple years ago), also Robert Rodriguez made a VR movie last year called The Limit with Michelle Rodriguez and Norman Reedus. It's an up and coming field.

james2025a 06-07-19 01:07 PM

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

I checked out the video for the Rodriguez movie and it looks interesting, shame it stars Michelle Rodriguez who i cannot stand. I have noticed that there appears to be two kinds of VR, one where you only appear to have a 180 degree view and then the one that seems completely 360 degree immersive. The completely immersive stuff seems to be in lower supply, which is a shame as thats when the VR experience seems to really be all encompassing and at its best. I can really see the potential for a complete change in the way movies are watched and games are played. I was playing Assassins Creed Odyssey last night and i was thinking of how cool it would be to play a game in VR in that kind of environment. VR will explode in the next few years for sure.

The one thing that gives me pause is it still seems really in its infancy and even a year from now i am sure there will be big advancements. As is always the case, its whether to hold off and wait or take a chance and jump onboard. At this moment i am VERY close to taking a chance and paying the $500 for the Quest.

VR porn on this thing is a revelation.

james2025a 06-07-19 05:59 PM

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

Whenever there is a new technology, porn always seems to be at the fore front. What amazes me is that Hollywood is not getting on the band wagon in a big way and faster. I wouldn't be surprised if Cameron and at least some of his Avatar sequels incorporate it to an extent. The idea of feeling like you are there and part of the movie would be incredible. Imagine being in the middle of thw battles in the Avengers movies. It would be out of this world.

I have not even looked at the PSVR, so will read up on that as I have a PS4 and it could be a good alternative if I decide to try something a bit cheaper.

And Max, what system did you have and what games/movies did you view? What are the ones you think are essential buys?

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

I have the Quest (went out and bought another one after selling mine), but haven’t actually bought any games yet. The Star Wars one seems to be a consensus must-buy especially considering the price. Most people are all about Beat Saber too, but its not my thing.
I am excited for the battle royale game coming, the name of which eludes me at the moment.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

I bought the PSVR bundle today (I pick it up tomorrow) that came with Blood & Truth and Everybody's Golf VR. I also bought Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Moss, Deracine, and VR Worlds (this was only $6 on PSN). I would have bought the Moss & Astrobot bundle but that one doesn't come with move controllers so it made more sense to get this bundle for only $50 more. I was interested in Blood & Truth anyways and that's a $40 game.

I've never been that interested in VR but there are enough games out now I was interested in playing and I figured if I didn't care for it I would just sell it.

I ordered mine from oculus.com, it said a week and a half wait but shipped the same day and was here 2 days later -- added perk it doesn't appear I was charged for shipping or tax. I also saw one (128gb) at Walmart.

Yeah, try WalMart in store, I cant get it to show up in the app but some stores seem to have stock.

Question for the guys: This, or the first piece of a $2k sound system that will take 4 years to complete (between birthdays and anniversaries).

I tried finding one over the weekend but no luck. Not surprised, this is Puerto Rico, where the only things in abundance are drugs, violence, bad music and shitty driving.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

Despite me saying (probably in this very thread) that I was holding off until PS5, I broke down and got a PSVR a month ago (the Beat Saber/Borderlands 2 bundle). I haven’t been able to play that much, but I’m seeing most of the pluses and minuses that I expected. When everything clicks, it can be great. But resolution issues, repeated loss of controller tracking, and awkwardness of tethering are issues that need to be improved upon. Really annoying to be getting into the flow of a Beat Saber session only to have my sabers drift away causing me to spectacularly fail  And while I have no signs of motion sickness that some see, I can’t see myself handling longer gaming sessions.

Even though platforming isn’t my genre of choice, Astrobot seems great from the demo. I like the idea of Moss, but I had bad tracking issues during that demo. The Batman game sounds like a pickup for me during this sale. Besides Beat Saber, what are the good “workout” games?

The Quest sounds intriguing too. 64GB sounds too low to store much ... how big are it’s downloads?

While it still sounds like this technology is a generation or two away this is something I’m really excited by and want to see succeed. With all of the portrayals of VR in sci-fi and the possibilities of the format, I’m thinking it’ll be something that will cross over to mainstream widespread use at some point. But what the breakout format will be remains to be seen.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

64g seems plenty for now as the games aren't more than a few gigs. I have even heard that you can even fit everything currently available on the 64g one. Though who knows how big game sizes will get going forward.

Astrobot (the full game) is like the killer app to me as far as the PS VR goes. The free Playroom VR gives an excellent sample of it. In fact it's still probably my most played game because of the kids, despite being free (and yes, I know they'll end up blind).

I'd do the Sound System, those last for a long time (lightning permitting) and are more an actual investment, VR is continually upgraded and the next best thing will probably be available before you know it.

Yeah, Astrobot is fantastic, really wish that wasn't first party (alas, the PS4 easily has the best Traditional Gamepad integration of any VR.)

Is it purely a sound system or a receiver for the TV? If the latter, I'm no expert, but isn't that sector going through some changes with the HDMI standards and passing through hi res videos? If it's just sound, then yeah speaker technology is pretty constant (if not expensive).

Also depends on which VR. PC VR, I'd agree, wait a bit. PS VR, the PS5 should be backward compatible if you're even going to upgrade to it soon, and it's got some decent deals right now.

Ok, I may be hooked on Pokerstars VR on the quest. Was playing on full table last night full of your typical characters you'd run into at a real casino table, lol. One guy sounded high as a kite and provided some pretty funny commentary. Being able to buy and use drinks/cigars/random trinkets is pretty fun as well.

Sideloading custom songs in Beat Saber Quest is surprisingly pretty easy, the app that guy created that essentially recreates the APK file is pretty slick.

It feels like that wouldn’t be as fun, as the levels are pretty well synced to their music. Is that not as noticeable as it seems like it’d be?

They vary but most are in pretty solid sync, ie: this absurd one and

The stages themselves work as visual synthesizers. If you change the color of your sabers + blocks in the mod, i believe it also modifies the stage colors.

I also sideloaded Quake onto the Quest. That was... weird. Really cool, but difficult to play and the scale was off (felt like an ant) but really cool just the same.

I have been trying to find a 128gb Quest, but no luck. Walmart and BestBuys are totally out of stock and what makes it worse is the fact that they cannot back order one for me as its Puerto fucking Rico. Such a double standard for shipping and buying to this island. US citizens, but they don't get treated the same as say people in Hawaii. Sure its not a state, but it's a fuck lot closer to the mainland than that state.

re: The VR Gaming Thread (Meta Quest, Vive, PSVR)

Had my first issues with the Quest last night. I was playing Superhot and my defined play area kept getting shifted, leading me to smack into a wall twice. I kept having to check and reset it. At the most extreme, it had moved like 5 feet, so that about half of the play area was on the other side of the room’s wall. Thanks to the nature of the game, I wasn’t moving very fast, but I could see it being hazardous if playing something requiring faster movements. Hopefully it was just a fluke of some sort, but I’ll definitely be periodically checking the boundaries when playing from now on.

I had that issue once as well, but it was because I was playing in a very dimly lit room.

It may come a lot earlier (depending on where you ordered it from). I broke down and order the Quest direct from Oculus last Monday. The notice said it wouldn't ship until June 28 at the earliest. It was delivered last Friday! Unfortunately I don't have my hands on it yet because I had it shipped to my work instead of home address (since I'm out of town starting late June I didn't want to risk a box sitting on my doorstep for a couple of weeks). And the way my work mail works is that packages go to a central location first, and then it may be 1-2 business days before it makes its way to my office. But soon ... with luck I'll have it in hand before the day is out
