No, but there were a slew of Wii games that were bundled with hardware. Not the console specifically like Wii Sports, but other goodies like:

Granted, Wii Sports was included in every Wii purchase, so that should probably be thrown out if we're talking gamers buying an additional game. |

-rolleyes- If every 360 included a copy of Halo 3 and I pointed a finger at 76 million Halo 3 sales, I wouldn't use that as an example of awesome sales either. 360 and PS3 bundles rotated pretty often and don't really compare. |
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
No. The Halo bundles for some reason never included the actual game. Probably because it's an M rated game which would limit sales. Actually, I think one bundle included a code for Reach but maybe I'm remembering wrong.
Don't forget WiiPlay. Every damn one of us bought that one, right? I don't even see how those numbers could be accurate. For 75% of this gen multiplatform games sold almost 2:1 better on the 360. Even now they're barely 1:1(some swing in PS3's favor like Burnout & Tomb Raider). That's on top of the 360 still being a hair stronger in console sales. Xbox not having an MLB game hurts it though. That's a few hundred thousand(million?) a year they're missing out on. |

Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
I think that Microsoft probably "won" this generation the way it was able to take such a commanding lead in the HD console race, which helped it to develop a large and possibly dedicated fan base. Of course, Nintendo surprised everyone by selling nearly 100 million Wii consoles (and will likely move past the 100 million units sold mark soon), though unfortunately for Nintendo that doesn't seem to have helped with the Wii U. And while the PS3 seems to have caught up with the Xbox 360 when it comes to systems sold, I think that it is the big loser this time around. While, of course, over 75 million units sold is quite an achievement, when looking at the PlayStation brand as a whole, the original PS sold over 100 million units, and the PS2 sold over 150 million units, and it looks like the PS3 will be the first PS system to not cross the 100 million units sold mark, which has to be troubling for Sony, considering it is the only console manufacturer this generation that didn't increase the number of systems sold compared to the previous generation of systems. According to most online sources for systems sold, Microsoft sold 24 million original Xbox units in the last generation, and sold over 76 million Xbox 360 units this generation. Nintendo went from having sold only about 22 million GameCube units in the previous generation to nearly 100 million this generation. However, when it comes to Sony, considering that the PS2 sold over 150 million units, and the PS3 sold over 75 million units, that means that in one console generation Sony has "lost" half of its fan base.

Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
I'm not sure how much brand loyalty there is these days, considering the third parties make their games for most consoles and they are usually functionally the same. The only difference is in exclusives, and I'm sure some are going to get the next Xbox because of the next Halo or whatever, but I wouldn't necessarily call that brand loyalty.
Nintendo did a really great job of marketing their 1st party characters (compare Super Smash Bros. to Playstation All Stars, or an imaginary Microsoft All Stars), and while some accuse them of rehashing stuff endlessly, for the most part the 1st party games are stellar and unlike things on other systems. As much as I like Uncharted or Halo, there are similar experiences to be had on the opposite console. We're going to have a bunch of gimmicks to try to differentiate the PS4 and next Xbox, and there will be timed, paid for exclusives and the like, but I'm not exactly married to one or the other at this point. |

Stupid move on both Sony & MS's part. |
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
I think the 360 won mostly because of the XBox Live service, which will likely carry forward a large audience into their next gen console, even though people have to pay for it. Online multiplayer is the most important feature this generation so I think PS3 falls at a close second for their less cohesive experience.
The Wii, despite having the most hardware sales, loses because of limited game selection, probably driven by poor game sales. The casual audience that bought all those Wii's doesn't actually spend $40+ on games very often. Especially when iOS came around and started swallowing their money $5 at a time. The last gen hardware meant that most AAA titles weren't released on it at all, especially over the last 3 years. Nintendo IPs were the only strength, and honestly they grow tired. I don't think Wii U sales will be even close to what they were for the Wii. The new XBox and Playstation will do really well. |

I think the easy winner for the next generation will be the yet-unannounced Steambox which actually brings something new to the living room along with an enormous library of dirt cheap games and total backwards compatibility. That's going to be the big dog on the block. And if Apple gets into the market, they'd be a huge player as well. |
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
I haven't read much on Steambox but is it basically going to be a fixed-configuration machine that runs games on Steam? If so, I would think the keyboard and mouse interface would be going in the opposite direction as far as complexity goes. I also think Apple would have an uphill battle with developers, unless we're talking Ouya-type games.
If Microsoft and Sony can convince developers to move most of their development dollars to the new systems, like what happens every generation, then I think adoption will be fine. I agree that the current gen games coming out look amazing, and nothing that the new gen has shown has really amazed me, but when the next Call of Duty is done by the b-squad on the PS3 and is a much better experience on the PS4, people will spring for the new systems. |

360 by a mile. Ps3 second for a select few good exclusives and Bluray obviously. Wii dead last. I don't see this trend changing at all next generation either, minus the fact that the Xbox will most likely play BR, making the PS4 obsolete.

Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
In terms of market dominance, it has to be Xbox 360. Even with Sony's massive brand advantage from the last generation, they still squandered the huge gap and lead they had over Microsoft. The Xbox wins for simply closing that installed base gap. This is coming from someone that has never owned a 360 unit.
The Wii was a novelty that quickly faded after a huge initial success. Nintendo will be a software house only within a generation or two. |

Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
Just saw this survey and thought it was interesting:
http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/game-...nsole/0113110? Perhaps more surprising is the Wii’s nomination as the best console ever released. The all-conquering PS2 only achieved a fourth place finish. The Top Consoles of All Time 1. Wii (15%) 2. Xbox 360 (10%) 3. PlayStation 3 (9%) 4. PlayStation 2 (8%) 5. Sega Mega Drive (7%) 6. PlayStation 1 (6.5%) 7. Super Nintendo (6%) 8. Game Boy (5%) 9. N64 (4.5%) 10. Nintendo DS (4%) |
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
That survey must have been completed by younger kids who didn't grow up with all the consoles. I can't imagine anyone who's been around to see all home consoles released would ever put a current gen machine near the top of the list. IMO, DS deserves to be close but the Wii/PS3/360 wouldn't even be in the top 5.
|
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
I'd absolutely put the 360 in the top 5 and I've been around since the Atari days. The Wii on the other hand wouldn't crack the top 10.
|
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
360 would be in my Top 5 too.
|
Re: Which console do you think won this generation?
Top 5 all time? I wouldn't be able to put it up there mainly due to its lack of worldwide support/success. My top 5 list would have SNES, PS1, PS2, DS, & GBA(SP specifically); not particularly in that order.
