Yeah. The key point, which seems to be ignored, is Penello's main point a few days ago was, "if something like that ever happened, you can be sure it wouldn’t happen without the user having control over it. Period."

I don't see how anything Medhi said contradicts that.

If they ever implement any of that stuff, you'll have to opt into it. That's a no brainer.

Wasn't MS derided by advertisers for making "do-not-track" the default setting in IE? And isn't MS the only webmail provider that doesn't use the content of your emails to target ads at you? I could be wrong, but that's how I remember those two things, but that was before I was really paying any attention to them...

I don't think anybody really cares, if you're going to buy an Xbox One now, being told "it's going to pick ads that suit you" isn't going to deter a ton of people.

I assume this was in reference to my last comment in my post. For that reason, I've removed it, because I agree.

I only made it in jest, but your call.

Anyways I'm now completely undecided on which console to get so I'm waiting until the new year to see what kind of reception the launch games get. Could go either way... but in the past I've preferred Sony exclusives and online isn't a huge deal to me

I guess I don't get the anti-ad rage that the internet tends to embrace these days. It's one lousy square on the main 360 dash. I rarely even glance at it.

I get it, and it makes me cringe a little, but it isn't that big of a deal.

If I pay $60 a year I should not be seeing god damn ads. I don't care about mountain dew or dorritos. That should go to silver members only. I boot up ps3 and can go to my game without seeing any ads and that's a free service! Next gen they need to add the option to disable ads if you're a gold member!

The PS3 has plenty of ads now, but you kind of have to look for them - and it's for stuff you can buy on your PS3. Xbox just needs a way to make Doritos and Dew materialize.

Where does that mentality come from though? I grew up with TV that we paid for, cable that we paid for, satellite that we paid for... all chock full of ads. When did this movement start where thinking if you pay for something, there should be no ads involved?

If I buy a movie ticket... ads.
If I buy a magazine or newspaper... ads.
Hell, there are ads INSIDE THE CASE of most games you buy.

Ads don't really bother me either. I see ads everywhere I go so on a console isn't much different. These days I boot up my 360 and immediately launch GTAV on that tile, and just ignore everything else. If there's so many that they get in the way of basic functionality and ability to navigate, or start pushing dumb things not relevant to the system or gaming, that's when i'll start complaining on the internet!

Well said.
I run AdBlock in Chrome, but I've actually started disabling it on specific sites that I respect that rely on ad revenue. No, I'm not going to click on the ads... ever... but if people still think ads are about "clicks" then they're very far behind the curve.

re: Xbox One Pre-Release Thread: Upscaled to 1080p! (11/22/2013)

It's the thought that people are quadruple profiting off of you, a) Paid for the console, b) Paid for the online service, c) bought a game, d) view your ads.

It doesn't bother me much outright, but it is annoying as hell in concept and all they've given people in return are a couple embarrassingly old games each month.

To note, there's plenty of bitching about the recent addition (last decade or so) of commercials in movie theaters, magazines are mostly advertisements, and I didn't start noticing ads inside of games until the original Xbox (outside of Nintendo Power subscription postcards). So it isn't exclusive to game consoles, it's just a little worse since such a big investment goes into it to begin with.

If I paid for a subscription website, I would likely be running AdBlock.

I guess I just don't understand when people collectively decided "If I pay you, you give me what I want ad free". I don't know when this deal was 1) struck and B) broken.

re: Xbox One Pre-Release Thread: Upscaled to 1080p! (11/22/2013)

Because it's new to video game consoles (well, late 2009). It's an introduced feature that doesn't help the player at all.

Plus I'm sure most people don't like spending a ton of money only to be sold off to advertisers, but the same argument can be made for.. I dunno, other stuff I'm sure.

Alas, our future is set and we all know it:

Spoiler:

Plus Microsoft seems intent on making Minority Report as real as possible:

Sorry, but as time has told, begrudgingly accepting features only leads to them becoming standard place in the industry, and companies pushing the tolerance of the consumer to it's limits. Better to speak up about your dissatisfaction rather than bending over and taking it. This is why it was nice to see gamers take a stand against the Xbox One policies.

I sometimes wonder if Sony would've ever charged for online if XBL hadn't set the precedent that gamers accepted...

Sony needed to charge, their network was a joke. But I know what you're saying

I think some of it comes from different websites and programs that offer a paid version to remove the ads.

Technicaly it still is a joke. It is embarrassingly slow to download files when compared to anything else.

Maybe I've just been getting luckier lately but the speeds have been great here, well great may be a bit strong, but much improved over previous attempts to download PSN materials.

improved - yes but still slow.
And updates have become far less noticable with the use of PSPlus.

fyi microsoft is heavily denying this stuff.

from major nelson:

Tl;dr We do not collect information to share or sell. You are fully in control of your personal data. Your privacy is important to us.
they are also trying to get a retraction to some statements made in that ad age article, stating comments were misinterpreted: http://allthingsd.com/20131007/micro...x-ones-kinect/
