If they wanted people to talk about their game, couldn't they have come up with some sort of arty, emotional commercial that has nothing to do with the actual gameplay or the game but grabs all sorts of media attention anyway?

They did. Last year (endish of '12) they released a CGI trailer akin to the first ones. Slow mo, emotional, sappy music. The works. Minus the media attention.

Leave a head on it and make the torso look decomposed and it wouldn't have been a big deal. The way they designed the thing, they're clearly going for the 'heh heh, boobs' response from a young male demographic, which is a pretty disturbing reaction to go for with a mutilated, yet somehow incredibly intact-in-key-areas torso.
