I know that when I'm two weeks from releasing a new gadget that is sure to be a home run, I try to make sure nobody knows when they can actually get one.

Shield reviews are out... seems like it's nothing spectacular or revolutionary, but decent at media and games with fairly nice hardware in terms of screen and controller with some usability issues streaming PC games and some inconsistent game experiences. The Verge and Anandtech seemed to like it.

If it provided a perfect experience I'd still be wary of spending $300 on it. But an imperfect experience? No way.

And remember, you also need a 600- or 700-series GPU in order to do any streaming, so that could add at least a couple hundred more to the price.

So wait a minute, you have to stream it from your own gaming PC? I assumed it streamed from a web server like OnLive does. If you already own a powerful gaming PC you most likely already have a large 1080p screen, so why in the world would you want to stream it to a screen that small? I thought the purpose of streaming games like this was for people that do NOT own gaming PCs...

It'll be neat for $50 in a few months.

Nope, the idea is that your computer is in your home office, but you stream from your computer through the Shield to your TV. So you can game on your big screen TV without dragging the computer out there.

To clarify, you can't stream from your PC to your TV via SHIELD, at least not yet anyway (too much latency, I suspect). You can stream from your PC to SHIELD, then output to your TV over HDMI.

You can stream wirelessly from the SHIELD to your TV using a miracast dongle, but that's only for Android stuff.

Yes, I should have said that - you have to run a cable out to the TV from the Shield.

I disagree that the idea is just to connect it to a TV, it's most definitely also to play using the small screen as well

Yeah, I see this mostly as a device to allow you to play full PC games via handheld. If I already had a compatible GPU, I'd consider picking one up for all the indie games I've picked up over the last few months.

I still don't get who the target market for this thing is supposed to be.

Office work computers aren't the same demographics as gaming computers and aren't typically used in the same areas.

So if you already have a gaming capable PC, you most likely don't have it in a home office. You most likely already have it set up to a large screen that you can play comfortably from a couch.

If you want something small and portable, well there are laptops for that. Laptops are highly portable, much more powerful, and have a bigger screen than the Shield.
