Ironic that EA's anti-pirate measures are having the totally opposite effect.

How bad do customers feel that a pirate can play the game till the cows come home for $0, yet they spent $60 and can't play it at all?
Seriously doubt anyone could reverse engineer a game of this complexity in 3 days. We're talking about a game that has components that rely on external servers to even operate. I'm calling BS on the pirating claim.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

For what it's worth, I was able to connect without issue last night after buying it. This morning it looks like there are lots of open servers as well.

Not sure how much I like the game yet, but it is certainly polished and fun. City size and traffic are biggest problems I have. Just not much room to build everything you need for a city it feels like. And I haven't quite figured out how to have people commute around the region, so I feel like I'm still building industrial zones in every city.

I'm playing fine this morning on East 2, but there is still no cheetah speed, leaderboards, or challenges. They did re-enable resource sharing at least.

I guess that means it's a fully working, virus free game. Go ahead and try it.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

Fuck this game.
I have yet to be able to play anything beyond the turorial. Even though the East 2 server is finally available I am always disconnected from it before the game finished loading up. If I do manage to get in I just get hung up on the create/join a game screen.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

That's really weird Max, I don't understand how it can be so inconsistent for different players. I haven't been on for a few hours, but I saw tons of open servers and everything was working fine this morning. I just assumed they had added the needed capacity. I don't understand why it's so hard to just add more servers.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

There are several available servers when I start the game, but I am trying to get on East 2 specifically so I can join flashburns region. But even though East 2 is available I still can't manage to get onto it to play.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

Odd Max, I'm really having very little problems today. I haven't been on much, but I played for a few hours this morning/early afternoon, and I logged in just now with no issues.

They patched earlier today:
Update: 03/09/2013

SimCity Update 1.3

This update to SimCity contains the following updates and fixes:

General
• Fix for a crash related to the highway interchanges and vehicles.
• Traffic was optimized for complex road sections.
• Fix for a specific case of city processing that forced players to rollback their cities to a previous state.
• Fix for a crash some players saw when exiting their city.
• Rapidly clicking or accidently double clicking the Claim city button will no longer create multiple regions.
• We temporarily removed filtering by friends and maps on the Join Game screen to better support database performance. Players can still find friends' regions by going to their friends' profile pages.

Servers
• Various database optimization to address issues with connecting to our servers
• We've added 8 new servers (Oceanic 2, NA East 3, NA West 4, EU West 5, NA West 3, EU East 4, NA East 4 and EU West 6).
I'm actually surprised, but traffic now is MUCH better, they aren't nearly as confused by 3 or 4 way intersections anymore like they were before (seriously, that's considered complex? lol). Both of my cities that had major traffic issues before are almost completely fine now.

I just bought the deluxe edition from the Origins India site for $46. The normal version is $27.99. I hope it works better soon...

So my region sharing is not working. I'm playing the Rousseau and Matisse fields maps. I can 'buy' power but I don't actually receive it, same with sewage and it also isn't recognizing the townhall upgrades in other cities. If one townhall has a Utilities Dept. the sewage treatment plant should be available in all cities in that region, right?

I believe you need to be connected by a road.

I guess I thought all cities were connected? What is the distinction? One city is the next lot over from the other and connected via the freeway. I will be building a rail station connecting them as well shortly.

I tried playing that one region with two cities on an island as well, and those can't share resources either, but they look connected by the freeway.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

I just spent five hours on this game tonight. It's crazy addictive, and I ran into absolutely no server issues. Guess you just had to wait out the first week's rush.

You need to follow the roads/rails. They aren't all connected. Most regions only connect 4 cities. There are a couple that have like 7 cities, and they are all connected though.

Not sure why you can't share with two cities connected by a road though. Maybe some servers have issues with sharing still?

It's possible, or the region was just glitched for me. My server wasn't available last night so I had to start a new city (it's really stupid regions are tied to servers). I did the region with 3 city spots and did sandbox mode. I built up all three pretty quick with specializations and sharing. It worked well, although I would still prefer to free build over a region as one city.

Sandbox mode is great though. Avenues are key in this game and it helps a lot to be able to lay them down right away and pre plan your street system.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)

Good video, helpful notes about intersections. I noticed the differences in stop signs vs. traffic lights depending on street density but not to that level of detail. My avenues all have a loooot of intersections at this point. I've found that building lots of buses and streetcars mitigates most traffic issues though.

So anyone want to do a group region? I would try and join yours flash, but that server always seems to be full for me. Maybe we could start a new region on one of the new servers that isn't as active? I feel like we've got a good hold on the game by now I won't want to bail when I realize I made a mistake with something.

As tough of a launch Sim City has had, they're not alone. 5 other bad PC game launches.

Meanwhile, I got my copy activated. I'm on origin as fumanstan if anyone wants to add me.

4 of those strike me as more justified. Half-Life 2 was a first, MMOs run into these problems. Diablo 3 and Sim City have no excuse.

I'm game for a DVDTalk region, especially now that the servers are somewhat stabilized. If there's enough of us, we might even be able to tackle some of the challenges once those appear. My Origin id is Otis_P_Driftwood.
