Are you fucking kidding me? Is this real?

I would rather spend money on this than anything else on the market. And only $200? This is incredible.

Interestingly enough, the Neo Geo console had a lifespan longer than both of the other consoles.

I don't think any console other than the Neo Geo had a lifespan of fifteen years.

Funnily enough, thanks to homebrew's both the Neo Geo and Atari 2600 are still getting new releases. I just picked up Halo 2600 at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo.

That video confirms this as a no-go on launch day for me. So basically, what you get is a giant docking station made up to look like the old systems. I'm gonna pass on that for $200.00. Cut that in half and I'll be interested again.

It is almost in half for just the unit itself without the docking station and controller: $130.

From the Engadget comments:

Colour me unimpressed.

This is just a skinned ARM device running a shoddy Neo Geo emulator. There was another device made by the same company producing these (it's not SNK) that had the identical form factor and slightly less powerful innards designed for gaming, and it was a piece of crap too.

I might care if they actually used a M68K/Z80 hybrid SoC/ASIC inside this to run games natively, but I guess that would have cost significantly more then slapping a crappy emulator inside a half-baked Linux distribution and calling it done. Hell, I might have even accepted the "emulator" bit if the dock was a true dock that accepted MVS or AES cartridges and fed those through to the handheld over USB, so you could actually plug in your old games and give it a go.

But no, what we've got here is basically an authorized rip-off, which really really sucks. Of all the things they could have done, they did the absolute minimum work possible and instead we got an overpriced cheap plastic piece of junk instead.

I've never understood why these retro-redo systems don't have a cartridge port for the original system. I would love to have a modern Atari 2600 with RCA/component outputs to play all my old cartridges on.

And the fact that you can get many of the old Neo Geo games on the Wii virtual arcade makes this even less desirable for me.

That Engadget review was brutal....but appreciated.

Best Buy's website has the Neo Geo Gold on sale right now for $130 if anyone is interested in it.
$120 if you use the RZ cert that many are reporting showing up on their accounts today that expires tomorrow.

I was going to do just that, but no bonus cert in my account it appears.

Amazon has apparently matched the $130 price btw, but currently oos.
