Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Anyone getting Legend of Grimrock? It's an old-school style RPG dungeon crawler. I just recently heard about it. The reviews are pretty positive, so far. It comes out tomorrow. $11.99 if you pre-order, and $14.99 regular price. I went ahead and pre-ordered it off their site. If you get it there, you get a standalone installer, plus a Steam key. You can also get it on gog.com.

Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Between this and Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, it is looking to be a good summer for some old school RPG action.
|
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
I pre-ordered mine from GOG.com. Looking forward to playing it.

Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Looks very good (Like eye of the Beholder First person RPG), but I am knee deep in Crusader Kings 2, so this will have to wait..Thanks for the link though!

But isn't he supposed to be a playable character in the new TF game? |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Here is a 24 minute video of a guy playing through one of the early levels.

The step by step movement would annoy the crap out of me. Even the enemies do it...

Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Really brings me back to Dungeon Master on our old Atari ST.
|
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Looks like it could be a little gem of a game. I was just talking with my brother recently about older dungeon crawlers and boom...here we have one. I will wait till some more reviews come in...

Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
If you've got an iPad, look for a game called Undercroft. It's also based on the old Eye of the Beholer series, and it's a free download.

That's because this is going to be a very old school RPG. It even has literally an "old school mode" in the options that turns off auto-mapping so you can map out the dungeons manually on paper just like old school RPGers used to do.
I'm looking forward to trying it out tonight. Although, I don't think I'm going that old school. I'll let the game map it for me. :) |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
This game gets extremely difficult quickly. I have played through the first three levels now, and the first two were pretty easy but the third was a major pain in the ass. You can craft potions, like healing potions and antivenom potions, but the crafting ingredients are extremely limited. There are tons and tons of spiders on the third level that poison you and I burned through my limited stock of antivenom quickly and didn't have ingredients to craft more. Poison doesn't seem to wear off on its own either. I had a guy go from ~80% health all the way down to zero and died from the poison. So it has to be cured with antivenom, but there is so little of it and so many spiders I ended up having to quicksave after every spider I killed if I managed to get through it without getting poisoned. I really like the game so far, but that was just frustrating as hell. I hope the rest of the game doesn't turn into a quicksave/quickload fest.

This game is tough. I was stuck on a certain point on the 2nd level for 2 hours! Finally got through it. Fun game though. |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
I didn't start playing until late last night, so I didn't get very far. I'm still on the first level. I fought some giant snails, and ran into a couple of puzzles. That's where I quit, and went to bed. I'm enjoying it so far.
Did you guys go with the default party, or create your own? I created my own. Human and minotaur warriors, lizard rogue, and a human mage. After hearing about the spiders, maybe I should have given them all the poison resistance trait. |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
It's 10% off right now on their site, Steam, and GOG. Their site says it's on sale for a limited time, which GOG and Steam state is until April 18th.

I didn't even find a bow and arrow until the third level which really sucked. Well I found some poison arrows on the second level, but there wasn't a bow anywhere that I could find and I carefully searched the walls for secrets.

It was 20% off if you pre-ordered. :p |

Created my own of course. I never go with pregenerated parties in any RPG. I made a human and minotaur fighter who will be sword and axe specialists respectively. A human rogue with bow and arrow and a human mage who will specialize in fire magic.

I'm interested in what kind of spells you can create with the different rune combos. Right now I can only really cast the fire spell. |

Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
ok...going to pick this up tonight..
any starting advice for those in the game a bit? What would you have done different maybe? Thanks... |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Ok a couple of questions...
Where is the first floating blue crystal that will revive my dead cowman? I'm not that far in, but already restarted once (stupidly fell into the first pit) and if it's close I would prefer not to start over again. I found a scroll is there any use other than to show me the spell (which I already knew)? I tried holding it in a hand and right clicking, but that didn't seem to do anything. Note to self SAVE your game more often. :) |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
I am on level 3 now. Slow start, but the game has gotten under my skin. VERY much worth the price...
|
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
Yeah, I'm on level 3 right now too. It's taking me a while to get through the levels, since I keep looking everywhere for secrets. I'm enjoying this game a lot.

I haven't seen any need to keep the scrolls. I tossed the spell scrolls since I couldn't find a use for them or the "info scrolls". |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
You don't need to keep scrolls. You only need to keep them to help you remember rune combos in case you forget.
Try falling in pits. I fell down one accidentally and there was some decent loot down there. Now I am making a practice to fall down every pit. I found out why my rogue archer is sucking so bad. Strength affects both the damage of melee and ranged weapons. I just discovered that while leveling up. Dexterity only affects your accuracy (and evasion), but ranged weapons always have 100% accuracy so dexterity is useless for a backline ranged rogue since he doesn't need evasion either since he shouldn't be getting hit anyway on the backline. So my maxed dexterity minimum strength rogue is fricking useless. If I was going to do it over, I would go with a dagger rogue. The Assassinate skill tree lets a rogue use daggers from the backline once you get 12 skill points in it. I also discovered that a mage's ice spell temporarily freezes many enemies, which synergizes well with a rogue letting him get behind for a backstab. Too bad I have been specializing in fire this game. Freezing those spider bastards on level 3 would have probably made it a lot easier. Speaking of spider's and their poison, I completely forgot you could sleep. While sleeping, your health regenerates quicker than the poison hurts you and apparently the poison does eventually wear off on its own. So all my saving and reloading was pointless. |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
I went with two fighters front row and two mages back row. This seems to be working really well. Both mages have the early fire spell. One is focusing on ice and the other earth. They shred enemies. I spent at least 30 minutes trying to figure out spell combos. I wish once you learned a spell it was easier to cast.
Also, the end of each talent tree is amazing. It is going to be hard to focus on 3 or 4 talents, when focusing on one or two will give you amazing upgrades. |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
I played a little more this morning, before work. I'm really enjoying this game. I never played too many dungeon crawlers back in the day, but this game is really fun. I'm at least halfway through level 3. I like searching around for all the secret rooms. I think my stats say I've found 10 so far. I'm working on how to open the third Iron Door I've come across. I finally found the spiders. the first one jumped me when I came around a corner. Made me jump. They've poisoned me a few times, but I've had enough ingredients to make a few potions, and if you're near a crystal, that will also get rid of poison. I had fun in one room, using a trap door to take out some extra enemies.
I really like that arrows and other thrown weapons can be retrieved. I also like that the flasks used for potions can be re-used again. I've put most of my mage's points into earth and spellcasting (?). I just got that skill up to 5 and it says I have two new spells I should be able to use. I'm going to start trying combos to see if I can find them without needing to find scrolls. I did put enough points into ice, so that I can cast the basic ice spell. I found a spear early on in level 1 or 2, that I gave to my Rogue. He's been able to use that from the back. I also found a bow in level 3, and have had him using that a bit. I don't usually replay games right away, but I'm pretty sure I'll be replaying this one later on, just to try out the different spells and skills I'm not using this playthrough. Hopefully there will be some mods and new dungeons added too. |

Hopefully there will be some mods and new dungeons added too. One thing that I really wish this game had is a Diablo style map randomizer. Diablo did that really well and it added tons of replay value since no two games would ever be exactly the same. I can't think of any other game that ever used such a randomizer and that's a shame. |
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
the only thing missing is some old school midi like music as you move around...

I might hold out for the iOS release of Grimrock. I think I'll end up gaming on my iPad more than all my other consoles and systems combined. |

I am on level 5 now...game continues to impress...
|
Re: Legend of Grimrock (PC)
I just finished level 5. That level was very easy. The change in environment reminds me of Diablo where you would end up in a different environment after every fourth level.
I am used to deliberately falling in pits now in hopes of there being good loot at the bottom. I fell in one pit and all that was there was a note from that Toorum guy saying "I too was disappointed to make the jump only to find nothing useful." Every once in awhile there is an earthquake or something. I wonder if this is on a timer? There are different pathways blocked by debris, and I wonder if the earthquakes cause these and if you are fast enough to get there before the earthquake hits if maybe the debris won't be there and there might be some special loot or something. I began to wonder this after seeing some debris blocking a pathway in the northeast corner on level 5 and the map shows that it continues on even though there is no apparent way to get there. |

This game needs a demo. I need to see if I want to play it on my HTPC or wait for it on iPad.

If you have an HTPC, why would you even consider an iPad port?
