Or is this just a prototype?

It's just a prototype. They'll likely make changes to the controller before going into production, one of which may be offering a wireless model.

All the Steam Machines from partners at CES.

I like the one with the SteamOS logo on it - oddly enough, from a company called Origin.

Since I know nothing about PC gaming I'm assuming picking the coolest looking box isn't a safe bet. :)

Breakdown of all the makes and models:

The prices are a tad bit disappointing.

The more I see, the more I think this project isn't going to go anywhere anytime soon, at least in this year or the next. I'm not very impressed with what i've seen, and I don't think any of these are enticing enough for that many people to jump on over buying a regular Windows PC for gaming, let alone non-PC players or those that build their own.

Maybe it'll take a couple years to really catch on the way Steam did, although even then i'm skeptical.

That one made me laugh a bit, given the Origin name.

the only way this is catching on is by drawing in casual gamers who may not typically buy a pc to game on. at these prices, that's not happening. those prices are catering mostly to hardcore gamers. get the prices down to where the consoles are now and then it's game on.

Those prices make my wallet sad. :(

Everyone who would probably buy one of these already probably owns a version...their own PC.

The Origina PC - Chronos seems to be the beefiest one. I don't even want to guess what the final price will be.

At the end of the day, there are 13 (!) hardware partners.

Gabe Newell, you stupid fat fuck.

You should've produced the hardware in house. You could've cut deals with Intel, nVidia, AMD, Seagate, and so on for the parts. You could've built a limited amount of pre-configured options with the ability to upgrade parts later. You could've sold the hardware at a loss as you would've made it back via Steam. Instead you've fragmented the Steam OS and Steam Machines right out the fucking gate. This is not going to catch on and this does not help the arguments for PC gaming being the master race.

If you pay nearly a grand for a "gaming desktop" with an integrated graphics card, you're fucking retarded.

re: Steam Machine - coming 2026

None of the Steam Machines use integrated graphics, do they? They all appear to have either an AMD or Nvidia card.

All these different hardware partners does give me deja vu of the 3DO though, and that's not a good thing.

I also have to really wonder who the target market is for these Steam Machines. Other than SteamOS and the Steam Controller, there's nothing that distinguishes them from any other PC that you can build yourself for cheaper. PC gamers like to tinker with their own hardware. Gamers that don't like to mess with hardware just go with a Playstation or Xbox. There doesn't seem like there is much of an in-between market which is what I guess is supposed to be the intended market for Steam Machine.

The Gigabyte Brix Pro and variations of iBuyPower's hardware (possibly a cheaper model with a multi-core AMD processor) will use intergrated graphics.

The Gigabyte Brix Pro has Intel integrated and the Scan NC10 uses notebook parts. I'm not sure what the Radeon GCN is that the iBuyPower system uses, but maybe that's an integrated GPU.

Oh okay. I didn't look that closely. If I remember right, isn't iBuyPower selling one with a mid-range Radeon video card for $499? The integrated graphics will surely be less than that. So I'm not sure where you are seeing a model with integrated graphics for $1,000.

So I'm on the same page here, these actually aren't PCs or can't be used as them in addition to running steam correct?

They're PCs and can be used as them in addition to running steam, Correct!

Yes, as long as you install a secondary OS (like Windows). The Steam OS is exclusively for running games. At least that's how I understand it.

At this point, I guess I'm better off building a new gaming rig and installing the Steam OS in it.

I'm running a Core i5-3570k with 8gb of RAM and a GTX 760 over Wireless HDMI while using wireless Xbox 360 controllers. I assume me using "Big Picture" mode is roughly equal to a mid-range Steambox (though I haven't run into many instances where I can't max out the games, minus some super AA sampling.) The free Splinter Cell Blacklist and Assassin's Creed IV took the burn off spending $199 on a graphics card.

I thought iBuyPower said their machine will be SteamOS only. The wording made it sound like you couldn't put Windows on it.

The iBuyPower $500 unit, which has a 500gb HDD, 4gb RAM, quad-core Athlon X4 740, and a Radeon R7 260X, was said to be a "Game console" as they put it, but they really have no way of locking Windows out of it.

They're just PC's, I imagine you could format the drive and do whatever you want with it technically. I believe some mentioned that they would come with dual boot Windows and Steam though.

I never thought about using Wireless HDMI for my PC to my TV. How is that? Any input lag?

I'm fairly sure its just a regular PC hard drive, so you should be able to install Windows.

What is the point of SteamOS anyway? Its Linux based, so it can only run Linux games. How many Linux games are there anyway? It seems like Linux would be even more obscure than Mac for gaming. If I was going to get a Steam Machine, I would definitely install Windows on it if for no other reason as it would be able to play many more games than a Linux OS.

I have minimal lag if any. Though I haven't played a ton of online competitive games so I can't say for sure. Far Cry 3, Mortal Kombat Komplete, Assassin's Creed IV, NFS: Rivals, DmC, Tomb Raider, BioShock Infinite, Rayman Legends, Castlevania: LoS, etc; all work fine.
