Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

iBuyPower's prototype Steam Machine for $499.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/25/5...-radeon-r9-270

This morning, iBuyPower revealed a prototype of its own upcoming Steam Machine, which will go on sale for just $499 next year. For the price of an Xbox One, the computer will offer a multicore AMD CPU and a discrete AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card — that's a $180 GPU all by itself — and come with Valve's Steam Controller as part of the package deal.

The company says the box is bigger than a PlayStation 4 but smaller than Microsoft's Xbox One, and comes standard with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 500GB hard drive. The glossy white case also has a fully customizable light bar running down the center channel, and an integrated power supply. You won't have to find room for a power brick on your home entertainment center shelves.

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

What we don't know that'll be important for the iBuyPower's console:
  • How much RAM will it have? All of the Steam prototypes are running with 16GB 1600 MHz.
  • Will it be a hybrid drive like the Steam prototypes?
I personally don't like the look of their unit, but $499 is fuckin' fantastic for a mutlicore AMD CPU (I'm betting it'll be an 8-core) alongside a 2GB graphics card.

With Valve and other hardware manufactuers now being aggressive to revive PC gaming, 2014 might be one of the best years to be a PC gamer.

Please don't come out until late next year. My credit card is hurting.

The 300 selected beta testers are being notified today (at about 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time) that they’ll soon receive Steam hardware and SteamOS for testing.
I'm going to be glued to my email come 2pm.

I don't get unboxing videos. I just wanna see the Steambox in action. Why would I care to see someone open the packaging?

You don't want to watch videos of people opening their mail? It ranks right up there with watching grass grow and paint dry in terms of excitement!

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

I'm curious about the official name of this thing. People often refer to it as "Steam Box" and their website calls them "Steam Machines," but it doesn't appear to be trademarked and they don't capitalize the word "machine" outside of the heading.

I suspect there isn't really an official name; it's just Steam and you can call the hardware whatever you like. Or perhaps it will vary based on the particular model.

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

These look surprisingly impressive, much better than most micro pcs I have seen. Someone on reddit posted theirs which was outfitted with an i7 quad core and Gtx 780! And they all have 16gb of ram. I'm not sure how they do all that in such a as all package. Will be interesting to see pricing as time goes on. With AMD in Ll the consoles, I could see nvidia making a push for this.

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

That second video is actually interesting. So I take it none of these Steam units will be SLI/Crossfire capable, given how cramped for space they are. Or will Steam release larger versions?

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

Yeah interesting vid, impressive stuff.

I doubt they will have anything SLI in that form factor. Way too much heat, and despite pretty good support for it these days, it is still an extra complication that would be unwelcome in a more consumer oriented device like this. I have a big case and lots of fans, my cards still push 90 degrees C each under heavy load.

Has Steam even committed to releasing their own consumer version? I though the idea was to let OEMs release a variety of SteamOS powered Machines.

An OEM certainly could build an SLI/Crossfire enabled box running Steam OS. I'm guessing they'll be in a bigger case though.

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

I imagine it helps too that the target resolution is only 1080P, so needing SLI/Crossfire isn't as big of a deal for TV's these days... unless they start thinking about 4K.

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

That's true, we're finally at the point where a single card, mid-ranged card can run most everything maxed out at 1080p with little problem, may not all be 60 fps, but it's still silky smooth.

Re: RUMOR: Valve working on 'Steam Box' Gaming Console

Wow, I didn't realize the controller was wired. I think that's really dropping the ball if they expect to compete for the living room, in which people have become accustomed to wireless controllers for 7 or 8 years now.

Or is this just a prototype?
