I wonder if it will use 4th edition rules? I really can't imagine Wizards of the Coast would ever go back to 2nd edition.
That's probably what the "modern enhancement" is. Just a change in the rule set and everything else remains the same. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
I've never played D&D but have heard many people ramble on about 2nd edition rules versus 4th edition rules. Why is this such a big issue?

1E came out in the 1970s. I never played it. 2E came out in the late 1980s, and I was about 10 years old at the time and that's when I first started playing. I don't know if there were complaints from older gamers about all the changes back then as I was too young to care about such things. Then in the late 1990s the TSR company was going bankrupt and Wizards of the Coast bought them and the D&D franchise. WotC then immediately created a new 3E which was a radical departure from 2E, and I know there were lots and lots of complaints about 3E being "dumbed down for newbies." While some of that was true, other things in 3E were more complex than 2E. Baldur's Gate 2 ended up being the last 2E computer D&D game. The next D&D game, Neverwinter Nights was 3E. 4E was released a few years ago, and I haven't really paid much attention to it since I don't play pen and paper anymore and no computer D&D game has yet used 4E. From what little I know about 4E, most of the complaints are that it is dumbed down yet again and is made more for the MMORPG crowd than the old school pen and paper gamers. I don't really know how much of that is true or not. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
There is an article up on Gamespy, with more info. They say that BG3 is their long-term goal.
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/baldurs-gat...1220929p1.html "We've been adding side stories, stories to tie things together, unfinished stories," Tofer said. "As far as new types of abilities, we have more announcements coming." Which is, of course, great news, but it's only the beginning. No, Baldur's Gate 3 isn't A Thing just yet, but if Overhaul has its way, it'll only be a matter of time. Tofer explained: "Baldur's Gate 3 has been our long term goal. We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that's the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for BG 1 and 2 just make sense before there's any Baldur's Gate 3." "We're totally thinking Kickstarter. It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian [Fargo] is doing with Wasteland is very interesting." |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
I just don't see how Baldur's Gate 3 could ever really work in anything but name only.
The Bhaalspawn story was concluded with the Throne of Bhaal expansion. There's really no way they could continue that story. So any potential BG3 would have to be a completely new story that is only tangentially related to BG1 and 2. Also consider the changes in rules with 4E now. BG3 will never be a 2E game like BG1 and 2 were. Wizards of the Coast would never allow that. They may allow an "enhanced edition" of BG1 and 2 to keep the 2E rules, but a brand new game like BG3 would most definitely be 4E. So any BG3 at this point would be Baldur's Gate in name only... kind of like the Dark Alliance console games... |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
 I loved the console BG: Dark Alliance games, mainly as a two person co-op experience.
Always meant to play the original BG games, and have the old things in a box somewhere, but at this point maybe I'll wait to see how this enhancement comes off. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
The site has been updated. The enhanced editions are coming to iPad. No word on a PC release, so I wonder if these are iPad exclusives...
I have never used an iPad before, but I am surprised these are coming because I thought the file size would be too large. Is there no limit to the size of apps? I'm not sure if there is a limit, but I hear some apps are well over a gig, so this shouldn't be a problem at all. I'm in, need some old school gaming on my new iPad (after Lent). |

It originally was five CD-ROMs with Tales of the Sword Coast on a sixth disc if you had the expansion. Sure a multi-disc game like that has some data redundancy, but Bioware later re-released it with better data compression and it was still three discs. I don't have the games installed currently, but I know BG1 was over 2 GB in size and BG2 was close to 3 GB. So the whole thing would be close to 5 GB, which is a hefty chunk if you only have a 16 GB iPad. Edit: Well, now I recall old games like this having an option to do a partial install or a full install. Since hard drives back then were so small, many people only did partial installs and ran the game off the disc. With much larger hard drives today, games are fully installed and run completely off the hard drive. Its possible the partial install of BG1 was only 300 MB, but the iPad will require a full install since there is no way to play it off a disc. |

I guess they could do something like free DLC that you download as you get to new areas? |

this makes me really want an iPad now
|
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
I have BG1 (including Tales of the Sword Coast) installed on my computer via GOG. It checks in at 2.51 GB.
I hope the iPad version runs on an original iPad. If not, I'm giving serious thought to upgrading to a New iPad. |

There's a minor update on the baldursgate.com site. They confirm it is coming to Mac.

http://kotaku.com/5928997/baldurs-ga...ng-september-1 There's more info on the main BG site. http://www.baldursgate.com/windows.en.html It shows three new characters and one new quest, The Black Pits. It also shows some new screenshots. I find it particularly funny that the Rasaad character looks like Kratos. It really shows that the intended demographic of this isn't really old school BG lovers like myself, but rather kids who love God of War. I can't imagine that kids who love God of War are really going to be impressed with a decade old game that still looks like a decade old game. Truth be told, I love BG 1 and 2 and frequently replay them about once every year or so. However, this whole thing has been a major disappointment to me. One big claim is that this is BG in high definition, but yet there has been a widescreen HD mod available for BD for several years now. The screenshots of this look literally no different than the classic BG running with that mod. I mean they are basically charging $20 for something that has been available as a free mod for years. WTF. Three new characters and one new quest isn't enough to make me buy it all over again. I wonder if this thing is going to be backwards compatible with mods from classic BG? That is going to be a major deal breaker for a lot of people I imagine if it isn't backwards compatible because there are tons of mods that the BG community loves to use. As much as I love BG and want to see BG become a hit with a new generation of gamers, I just don't see it happening. This looks like it is going to fall flat on its face. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
I always thought Kratos looked like Minsc:

Yeah, now that you mention it Minsc does bare a slight resemblance to Kratos, but their personalities are completely different. Minsc is a very unique fun loving lovable guy with a miniature giant space hamster. Kratos is the typical cliche badass that's a dime a dozen. And look at the new character Rasaad: http://baldursgate.com/images/features/rasaad.png He looks much more like Kratos than Minsc does and will probably have the personality to boot considering they say Rasaad is a monk so he will probably be some badass dual-wielding ninja monk thing. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
Minsc was one of the greatest characters ever. To this day my wife and I still quote some of his lines because they crack us up.
-Where Minsc goes, evil steps aside! edit: After looking up some Minsc quotes I have decided I need this one on a poster to put in my classroom: This behaviour must not continue. Feel the burning stare of my hamster and change your ways. |

Anyone try this yet? Released for PC today. I already have the original on PC, but I may be interested in the iOS version if it works on iPad 1 and gets good reviews.

I'm going to wait for the ipad version I think, if it turns out well, and I'll wait for a sale. I figure all of the bugs will be worked out by then.

re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
Same here. I'd like to try the iPad version.

re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
A potential problem with the iPad is the file size. I have never actually used an iPad or any other tablet, but I thought app sizes were fairly small. I thought iPad games were all the small Angry Birds minigame style stuff that is only a couple hundred megabytes in size. Has anyone before this ever released a full size game on iPad before?
The install size on BG:EE on my PC is 1.8 GB. BG2:EE will be even bigger. So if you want the whole BG saga, you are looking at a minimum of 4 GB. If you only have a 16 GB iPad, that is literally a quarter of your hard drive space taken up by BG alone. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
There are multi-GB iPad games out there.
|
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
Infinity Blade II comes in at a little over 2 GB, same with Avengers Initiative if I'm not mistaken.
|
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
Yep, app sizes are all over the place, some games are only a few megabytes, some games like the infinity blade games are a couple gigs. I'm glad developers are free to include whatever file size they want and there isn't some silly arbitrary limit like XBLA had when it started.
|
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
The iPad version was released today. It's $10. The PC version is $20. What the hell.
|
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
The iPad version has some of the content as an IAP, whereas it is included in the PC version from the beginning.
I'm disappointed it only supports iOS 6, which means no iPad 1 support yet. |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
The three new characters are the in-app purchases. I can't really see how that alone makes for a $10 difference over the PC. Basically they are saying each new character is worth $3.33?
Also Trent Oster (one of the main programmers) commented on the lack of iPad 1 support. He said there is a memory problem since the iPad 1 has half the memory of its successors. They are still working on it and hope to get it work. http://forum.baldursgate.com/discuss...ipad-1-support |
re: Baldur's Gate III (PC, PS5, XSS, XSX)
I'm sure most of the reason for the price difference is the market. iOS gamers are used to even the highest quality games being $2 or less.

It's on steam now. 20$ I'd like this, but you can get the anthology at gamersgate for the same price with all those games, not sure the EE makes up for the $ difference. |

Looks like this finally came out on Android. I'm about to travel, so am likely going to grab it, but looking to hear some opinions from those of you that bought and played the iPad version (or if anyone has jumped into the droid already).
