Well, this generation I've liked the open-world action RPGs like the Mass Effects, the Fallouts, Elder Scrolls, etc.

Last generation, I think it was extreme sports games inspired by (and of course including) the Tony Hawk games. But except for a couple of mediocre Shaun White games, those have pretty much died out. Of course, I say that as the new SSX is finally about to be released, so there's one.

My heart still lies with JRPG's. Big bonuses to any that have a deep item/weapon creation system and rare/hidden/side stuff to do. DQ8, FF12, Rogue Galaxy...all amazing games at the top of my list.
