Here are a couple of pics I took of the newest poster. It has all of the characters for the upcoming game.

Interesting. Thanks for that. Does the exclusive set I pre-ordered from Game Stop come with regular or light core Shroom Boom?

Not sure of the answer to that. I took these pictures somewhere other than Gamestop and I have my copy of the game pre-ordered from Newegg.

It's not light core. The light core figure has a different pose than the one at gamestop.

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

Yup, you're right. Maybe I'll skip this set entirely since I don't need another Chop Chop and would rather have a light core new figure as opposed to a regular one.

I was at Target today and they're advertising having an exclusive Granite Crusher, which is a blue color. I took a picture.

I seen that yesterday as well, I wonder if it will be a different pose or just a color variant? I'm guessing the figures I pick up will be dictated by whatever I find in stock first. If I have the choice between a regular and light core at the same time I'm leaning towards the light core versions.

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

My advice is to go ahead and order the complete package even if you already have a portal as the new one will come with a cable because of the amount of battery juice that some figures will consume. Also, if you were able to get in on Newegg's promo codes for discounts then you could have pre-ordered it for about 65 bucks total which is the same price as the game and figure itself.

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

I finally got around to listening to that half-hour interview on WIRED with Paul Reiche. My earlier comment about another cash grab with Adventure Packs may be a bit off. Reiche indicated the current ones *will* carry forward and open levels in the new game but apparently there will be no new ones produced. That lessens the sting of 48 "new" characters. Yes, I know it's really only 16 truly "new" ones but with the Wow-Pow addition, the LightCore ability, and the ability for the series 2 figures to dynamically change upgrade path almost makes them all mandatory. The thing I wasn't clear on is will the series 1 figures be able to dynamically change upgrade path as well? I'm also a bit undecided about not needing batteries for the portal. We use rechargeables and have no issues other than the need to remove the screw to change batteries. Considering the jack for the portal cable is on the *back* of the Wii I'd rather use batteries. I'm hoping it will be a hybrid type and allow for either but I'm not holding my breath. The interview didn't indicate a choice. I'll probably just use the existing battery powered portal and use the new one as a "hot spare" or hook it to the 2nd console so the kids can play at either location.

"Perhaps the biggest tension here is that the original Skylanders figures won’t get the ability to switch upgrade path or the new Wow-pow — although they do get an increased level cap."

I have no idea why he didn't bother to list the normal characters or why he has the wrong release date... I am too lazy to watch the video.

"As we talking and played we made our way through the first wave of the Skylanders Giants (Treerex, Bouncer, Crusher and Swarm), Normal Skylanders and Lightcore characters (Prism Break, Drobot and Eruptor). "

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

I am having a hard time passing up the 3 / 4 adventure packs that I am missing now that they're $14.99 on amazon. Hopefully the old figures will unlock something in the new game.

I hate how 2 of the 3 new characters (pop fizz and chill) in wave 1 are going to be lightcore characters in a future wave. Now I have to wait until the lightcore version is out to get them. I know my daughter wants pop fizz but I want the light up version! The only new character in wave 1 besides the 3 Giant figures is Fright Rider...

The glow in the dark cynder from the walmart giants bundle is kind of ugly...

Has anyone found Giants character packs available for pre-order? Other than the one at Gamestop all we're finding are the game packs.

I don't know if anyone will be allowing preorders on figures. I know TRU is doing a holiday thing where you can put a deposit and sign up for a list of toys you want and supposedly you'll be guaranteed one for the holidays. I don't know if it applies to skylanders figures though.

My plan is to go to walmart at midnight, target / tru when they open and Best Buy if I can't get the figures I want at the previous stores. My plan is to get the Granite Crusher at Target and the Legendary Bouncer at TRU. I'll pick up Fright Rider wherever I can find him. I am going to try and wait for the lightcore versions of pop fizz and chill. My daughter really wants pop fizz so waiting might not work out.

I'm gonna sit this one out for awhile. If BB does a Black Friday Deal on a set, I might pick that up. But I am not going to hunt down each figure and be preoccupied with getting them all NOW!

... but then again, I reserve the right to flip-flop on that last statement. ;)

TRU did a Buy 1 Get 1 Free deal on last Black Friday. I grabbed four sets during that sale. But that was before "the rush", when it wasn't a well-known game yet.

Now that it's so popular, the resellers will swoop in and buy everything.

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

The Sunday Wal-Mart ad shows Giants "Available Oct. 21". Both starter packs are shown along with 3 figures. The WM "exclusive" is a glow-in-the-dark Cynder in the Starter Pack. They also show a "Regular" (Pop Fizz), a "Light Core" (Eruptor), and a "Giant" (Crusher).

Based on the ad, here are the new prices for figures:

Regular: $9.96
Light Core: $11.96
Giant: $14.96

IMHO the "regular" and "Light Core" prices are just a bit on the high side. I expected the "Giant" characters to be ~$15. Of course I thought the jump from ~$8 to ~$9 last year was nothing more than a cash grab and partially designed to slow sales with the higher price so plants could catch up. Based on last year I fully expect TRU and a few others to be a dollar or two higher "just because".

Skylander figures used to be $8? I was actually surprised that GS didn't have the same prices as TRU.

Skylander figures are worth no more than 8 bucks in my opinion and 10-11 for the Giants. However, we are the ones to get ripped as we have to fulfill our childrens' needs for more and more figures.

Finally decided to get Skylanders for my son for Xmas this year. We have the starter set and a bunch of figures hidden down in the basement waiting for Xmas. Now he just noticed that there's a new Skylanders game coming out. Can't win, LOL. Ah well. He'll have fun with the first one for now. :)

Did you just buy it? Apparently Best Buy will have the Starter packs on sale for $39.99 tomorrow as the Deal of the Day. Maybe you can get it price matched.

If it's not too late you could always return the first one and buy the new one. The old figures will work but the new ones will be better.

Dammit! No, we bought it when it was on sale for $49.99 at Kmart a month or two ago. No worries. I'm not even 100% sure he'll like/play it. He's only 4. If he does like it, we'll work on getting Giants next. :)

My daughter just turned 4 and she loves skylanders.

I am pretty sure Kmart's return policy is 90 days. If you want to jump straight to Giants it's currently available for preorder at newegg for $63 with the following promo code EMCJNJD242.

Well, in that case, I think I'll cancel that pre-order. Any way I don't have to buy something for full price at that evil corporation is good news in my book.
Unless, of course, I can sell it for a decent profit. But I doubt that here.

Sprocket looks like a cheap knockoff fig you'd get in a Taco Bell kid's meal.

Cliff nOtes on this? Is it kind of like Pokemon? (each character has different abilities). So essentially you try to get as many as you can?

Michael Corvin 10-17-12 08:49 PM

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

Not really. You can play through the whole game with just the characters in the starter pack.

They all have different abilities and having 1 of each of the 8 elements allows you access to all parts of the game. So you can beat it with the starter figs, but to see 100% of the game you have to at least get 8 figures.

Decker 10-17-12 10:53 PM

Re: Skylanders, Anyone?

It's a convergence of video games and toys. Each character is a nicely detailed toy with a NFC chip in the base. When placed on the "Portal" which is plugged into the game console, that same character appears in the game. It's like physical DLC. The experience and upgrades you attain in-game are stored on the chip and you can bring your figures to a friend's house and play that character, with his current level and upgrade, in-game on your friend's console, even if it's a different game system than yours.

You don't have to collect all the figures (and at $8- $10 each, it's pretty expensive. They will be up to $15 each this time), but many of us here did manage to compile the entire set of 32 character figures (plus other figures that unlocked levels and stuff) last round.

So bottom line : Unlike Pokemon, you don't collect the characters in-game, you collect them by begging your parents and grandparents until the purchase them all for you!

The info available so far the cannon's do show up differently in game (one is silver, the other gold) and the actual toys light up (silver one has blue eyes/barrel, gold one has orange eyes/barrel), but it's believed that they unlock the same battle arena. I'm going to keep my pre-order since it's already paid off at GS, even though I'll have to wait until 11 a.m. to pick it up.

I've only played the first two chapters of Giants so far since I only have Tree Rex (he's really slow), and I was able to use my green base figures (first game) to get into the 'locked' element areas.

Somethings I have noticed playing around with other figures, is the green base figures remember upgrades purchased in Giants when used again in the original game.

The adventure pack levels from the first game unlock in Giants as chapters 17-20 in the chapter select screen, and each one also unlocks a battle arena.

The sidekick (Frito-Lay promotional) figures work in Giants (same as the first game, they just follow you around), and from the character collection screen looks to be 4 new ones also.

Is the Target exclusive something they will keep stocking like the TRU legendaries? If not I can see a reseller buying every single figure.
