If you ordered DS3 and are digging DS2, you're doing yourself a disservice by not finding the original DS and starting with that. Part 2 makes many references to the first game. Plus it has just as many "oh shit" moments. And it's actually pretty short compared to the other two. People that haven't played any of these are really missing out on some truly fantastic games, IMO.

I appreciate the advice. I tried looking for it at local gamestops but no luck. I read up on the story for part one. I will keep looking for it but will continue to play 2.

I actually played 2 first and loved it so much I went back and played 1. Not ideal, and while I did find the controls and graphics of 2 superior to 1, it was still def worth it.

Re: Dead Space 3

You can certainly play them in any order you want... 2 and 3 both have a "Previously on Dead Space" video in the main menu to catch you up on the story thus far. I'll just say this, when you get to Chapter 10 or so in Dead Space 2, it's WAY more dramatic if you had already played the first game.

How are the levels divided? Will it tell you you finished a level?

Totally agree with this. DS2 is much more effective if you've played the original DS, especially in certain sections (you know what I'm talking about). Not to mention that the first game is still the best in the series.

The chapters all flow into one another as the story moves along. You'll just see a new chapter briefly pop up on the bottom of the screen when you reach it. The first game is the only one where it was obvious when you were starting a new chapter.

Oh is there a way to see what chapter I'm currently on?

Re: Dead Space 3

In DS3 you can pause it and then go to "progress and unlocks" and your current chapter will be selected... in DS2 I really don't remember if there was a way to tell other than paying attention when it briefly flashes on the screen.

Re: Dead Space 3

Your save file in DS2 lists the current chapter, so you can just save and then look at it that way.

Yeah just saw it thanks. I'm on chapter 2 and am stuck on the part by the laundry room and there's like 6-7 that come at you in the total dark. I'm sooooo fucked.

This game is awesome. The weapons tips helped a ton--having the right gun makes a HUGE difference. I crafted a shotgun that has a plasma blast as a lower attachment, and it rules. Two hours went by like 2 minutes last night, and the little
Spoiler:
loot-finder dude
is worth his weight in gold--got me enough stuff to actually build some attachments, power up my suit, etc. I'm somewhere early in Chapter 6 and it's really getting good.

Don't overlook or neglect the ration seals that the scavenger bots will also pick up. They can be used in place of real money to buy more resources and weapon parts in the microtransaction menu ("Downloadable Content") at benches. This becomes much more important in the harder modes, especially Pure Survival.

As been mentioned already, the crafting doesn't really take hold until later (or on subsequent playthroughs). Not only do you need to find the parts, but you also need to collect a good amount of resources (scrap metal, tungsten, etc) to build any "pre-made" ones via blueprints. If you enjoy the game, you will definitely be playing more than once, or going back to previous parts using chapter select. I honestly didn't get a real solid grasp of the bench until my first playthrough was pretty much complete. But if you continue to play the game in other modes or whatnot, the bench becomes your best friend.

After the great tips in this thread and a few more days of playing, I'm slowly getting a feel for the crafting. What started out as frustrating is actually starting to feel like a well-paced learning process by the game designers. After reading a tip on how to aim scavenger bots to pick up decent resources (I guess I wasn't paying attention if the game explained this), I've been able to build weapons a bit more substantially. As you mention, the whole crafting thing seems like it's designed to reward multiple playthroughs. With the two previous games, I did my second playthroughs immediately after completing my first (love the New Game + feature.)

I had completely forgotten about ration seals before this post. I had 80+ in my account so I got a healthy download out of that.

Finished this up just in time for Crysis 3 tomorrow. Great game. Maybe a bit to much wall scaling and zero gravity stuff but overall really good. If there's another I'll be on board (which is more than I'll say after a recent third game from Ubisoft. :) )

I have completed maybe 20-25% with my buddy on co-op and I gotta say I am loving this game. One of my favorite games in years.

I took a chance in this with the Amazon Deal of the Day and I'm hooked. The demo didn't do it justice. Just like the second game, I thought I'd never play and well so much for that

I've played through this game 5 times already, plus numerous times just randomly jumping into online games. I absolutely love it. It's too bad so many people seemed to be turned off by the demo and mediocre reviews. It's definitely one of the better games I've played in the last couple years.

Re: Dead Space 3

I've been enjoying this quite a bit too and am just about through my initial playthrough. Figuring out the weapons bench is a must. I've been walking around with two rocket launchers, one with a lower shotgun and one with a lower incendiary grenade launcher. On normal, it's toeing the line of being too easy. Once I finish it up, I'll probably go back and tackle the co-op missions and then maybe try to 100% everything.

One thing that I do find extremely annoying is the save system. I decided to take a break from the story and hop back to replay and 100% some previous levels. That created a new save point, so I couldn't get back to where I was in the story. Then, choosing the 'load the furthest unbroken point in the story' took me to chapter 11, despite being on 16 at the time. Finally I just picked replay chapter 16 and it let me start at a checkpoint not too far from where I'd been.

I love the Dead Space franchise. I lliked the Demo. I hate that reviews say its the same old thing. I am OK with that since I think that the gameplay From the previous 2 was already great and I just want more. I 'll say I played Aliens Colonial Marines and this blows it away. You could say its apples to oranges but if that Aliens game was more like Dead Space it would have been so much better.

Finished this on normal. The last boss was a joke and so was the ending.

Fun ride but it got boring at the end. I don't see myself replaying it.

According to VGChartz, as of February 23rd, it's only sold 880k copies across all platforms in the world. Wow. That's pretty terrible.

Dead Space 2 sold 2.88 million across all platforms in the world.

My guess is it will sell better after it sees a price drop. I know many people who held off on Dead Space 2 until it got to a cheaper price point.

On a side note, EA really has to stop with their Origin bullshit. Get on board with Steam already and their sales will increase a decent amount, even if we can never read about it.

I just don't get it. I've played all 3, and DS3 is a great game. I don't know why it's not selling; just don't get it. I'm on Chapter 13, and while it took a while to get going and to get used to the changes, it's a compelling game and infinitely better than something like Assassin's Creed 3 (with 4 already announced). Bummer...

Fans didn't buy the latest installment of a solo survival horror series after it was transformed into a microtransaction-laden co-op action shooter?

You don't say, EA. You don't say.

(As I've said before, I really liked DS3. But this is the impression that many people had about the game before it was released, and I don't see how it's not responsible.)

Re: Dead Space 3

Well, hmm...

Rumors of Dead Space’s Demise Are False, Says Studio

A report earlier this morning, citing unidentified sources, suggested that Electronic Arts had terminated its Dead Space franchise—including work on an unannounced Dead Space 4—in light of poor sales of Dead Space 3. The game's studio says the rumors are false, and EA itself disputes the portrayal of Dead Space as a troubled brand.

"The reports of our death were greatly exaggerated," said Dino Ignacio, a member of the Dead Space development team, over Twitter. Another Visceral Games developer, writing on NeoGAF, called the rumor "completely false based on my knowledge."

An EA spokesperson at first told Kotaku that the company wouldn't comment on rumor or speculation, but later added: "While we have not announced sales data for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and it remains an important IP for EA."
I'm sure there's something going on here, whatever it is.

It is microtransaction-laden, which I don't like. However, I don't find it any more a FPS than the previous installments. You walk, stomp stuff, things jump out at you--same as before. It's not like it now resembles Call of Duty.
(And I do hope they make a 4.)

Well, it's definitely not an FPS (first-person shooter) at all. ;)

Again, though, I was talking about the perception of the game pre-release and how that affected sales, not what it actually is.

I don't remember ever shooting dudes in 1 or 2. I'm shooting a lot of dudes in 3. I don't want to be shooting dudes in a Dead Space game.

Yeah did you shoot anything alive in the first two games? I mean non alien?

Soldiers in a Dead Space game made as much sense as soldiers in a Resident Evil game.

At the very end of DS2, you kill that military guy that was trying to prevent you from reaching the marker.

Honestly I don't see why people have such a problem with soldiers being in this game. It fits with the story progression and they're really only on a handful of levels. In the parts where it's soldiers AND necromorphs, you can just sit back out of the way and the necros will take out all the soldiers for you.

Because it turns Isaac Clarke, civil engineer into Isaac Clarke, mass murderer?

They're trying to prevent him from shutting off the machine/marker or whatever. This unitologist faction has been part of the story in EVERY game, and they've always been trying to kill Isaac. Like I said, it fits with the story progression. You're not just shooting random people.

Mass murderer? They always shoot first, so shooting back at guys firing away at you does not, in my humble opinion, make a video game character a mass murderer. For anyone it does, well, might want to try a different game.

Aren't most video games about killing, beating the shit out of or stomping something? The rest are called racing and puzzle games. Even Mario is a mass mushroom murderer.
