Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

Rented the new Driver over the weekend. Really dug the single player mode. Some unique stuff in there considering it's just another driving game.

The demo didn't do this one justice. I had a good time playing through it. When it drops in price I'll probably pick it up again to do the multiplayer stuff.

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

The last couple of Drivers really left a bad taste in most people's mouths. Hence the apprehension probably. But with what I have seen so far, I will certainly take a chance on this once it hits the $25-$30 range. Glad the single player mode is really shining since that's where I'll spend most of my time.

I played the demo over the weekend and it really didn't do much for me.

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

This might just be a "me" thing, but I'm finding more and more that demos don't work for me. I'm at the point where I'm playing a game for the whole experience, and demos are just giving you an incomplete slice most of the time.

I played the first part of the demo and thought "well, that sucks, not getting that". But when I got to the same section of the game in the retail release, it played better to me, because I knew the context behind it.

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

I was so so on the single player demo and when i tried the multiplayer demo i got a message saying the servers were down so that at least took away any chance of a day one purchase. I have read that many people are enjoying the game and that there's a lot more in the game then we did see in the demos. So for me it falls in the "i'll get it when it drops in price" category most likely.

I played the demo and it was okay. I might pick this up when it hits $20 or lower, and I have nothing to play. There are tons of better titles coming out soon anyway.

Josh, the KMart rep who posts over on CAG, mentioned that it didn't sell well at all this first week and it will be subject to "deep discounts" this holiday season.

Welp, if you go to Amazon, used copies are already going for mid 30's. I would say if you are willing to wait until Xmas time, you can probably snag a new copy for $20 no problem.

It's a $40 title. They should have released it as such.

I'll Redbox it when I have a free weekend. Sounds like I could plow through it in a day or two.

I loved the first game, although it always cracked me up when you would do something like roll through a yellow light and the police would respond by sending the entire department after you, ramming you off the road or (due to the occasionally wonky physics) 100 feet in the air.

Yep. More developers need to recognize this fact. We'll pay a premium for premium games but those 2nd rate titles -- whether they deserve accolades or not are not going to get $60 on launch from anybody but a hardcore supporter or an idiot.

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

They'd end up selling more at $40 anyway. Lots more.

Deadly Premonition sold a ton of copies at $20. No one would have paid $60 for it. Except me.

I've always liked the Driver games. I'll be in once it's sub-$20.

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

Played this for about an hour, 45 minutes of that was doing 1 mission to lose the cops. It is pretty much impossible to lose the cops. Uninstalled, returned. I like the story, and I like the mechanics, but when you can't even pass the first mission because of the wonky handbrake controls where you tap it for more than 1/4 of a second and you do a 360 and the fact that if you don't hit anything and drive top speed the cops just easily get right in front of you and send you into a wall. I have no problem with games ramping in difficulty later in the game when you are more familiar with it, but the first mission is ridiculous.

For a game called Driver I would expect the driving to be better.

Agreed, it was impossible for me to lose the cops by myself. I needed to hijack a truck or tanker and ram the cops off the road. Not sure if that's the only way they expect you to shake the cops, but it worked for me.

I'll pick this game up when it hits the $20 price point.

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

Ok, I gave it another shot and I found out what I was doing wrong. If anyone else is having this issue with not being able to lose the cops
Spoiler:
Do more missions, you get a boost on one of them that helps a lot

I'm actually enjoying it now.

Sounds like the first level of Demon Souls all over again.

Weird, I had no issues at all losing the cops.

I rented this from Redbox last night. It's actually surprisingly fun. It bombed and it's a Ubisoft release, so you can bet it'll be $20 in a few months and I can wait. But I do like it despite its super-wacky story and gameplay.
BTW is Nolan North voicing Tanner, or do just all white male video game voice-over workers now sound like him?

Re: Driver: San Francisco (no thread? really?)

Finished it finally tonight. It was incredibly frustrating at times since some cars that you HAVE To use in a race handle like they are made of paper, but the story kept me in. Great story I thought, made me want to finish it, even through the frustration.

According to wikipedia it's this guy

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0330983/

It could of course be wrong though since it's wikipedia, although he does kind of look like Tanner lol

He did do voices for

Killzone 2
Enslaved
Uncharted 2 and
Driv3r (this makes him being the voice sound like it's true)
