EA postpones release of next NBA game until Fall 2012

http://content.usatoday.com/communit...ding-in-2012/1

This news is a few weeks old, but I didn't see anything here.

Excerpt:

The stellar pro hoops franchise NBA 2K will have to wait another year before facing any competition.

Electronic Arts revealed it is continuing work on a NBA simulation, with a target release date of fall 2012.

"We have top talent on the game, and we're giving the new development team time to deliver a superior experience," says EA Sports President Peter Moore in a statement. "We're making great strides and looking forward to launching a new game next year."
EA's NBA franchise, whatever they plan to call it, is dead. Postponing the game for 2 years is going to sink it. I noticed in the article that they aren't even referring to it as NBA Elite anymore.

Maybe the NBA should go ahead and make an exclusive deal with 2K.

Just kidding. I wonder if they'll release an updated NBA Jam.

I don't think it's dead (how did Live do last year?) as long as EA can throw the weight of their sports franchise behind it (to me, Live has always been inferior, and it's not nearly as close as NFL 2K and Madden used to be, but it's lasted this long). But hopefully the 2K team continues to improve their (already awesome) game.

Between this and the possibility of an NFL lockout hurting Madden, how is EA going to do this year?

Wow, the mechanics for NBA Elite must have REALLY been bad for them to take a two year hiatus. That sounds like they couldn't salvage anything worthwhile from it.

What was the last one they did? Live 10? That one sucked pretty bad compared to the 2K games. I still managed to have some fun playing it when it came out but 2K was better by a really wide margin.

Wasn't there a demo of Elite that was released at one point? I could have sworn I remember seeing one and when I went to download it, it was gone and they announced the plug was getting pulled.

I'd actually be more excited about them (or anyone) making a new college basketball game

This is a sad fall from grace, I remember when NBA Live was at the top of the video game sports world (not counting Madden). Of course that was about a decade ago. Still have found memories of playing the PC ports

So I wonder if EA will simply throw a ton of money at the NBA and get an exclusive deal to kill their competition in the basketball segment like they did in football. With the NBA and players in talks this off season I could see it happen or at least attempted.

I would be really pissed if they even tried. I was a fan of the NBA Live brand when I had the Sega Genesis and Playstation. But, ever since I got my 1st XBox 360, the EA NBA games have always been inferior to 2K. I would like the NBA is probably happy with what 2K has put out.

I second this. A new college basketball game (and perhaps a price tag of let's say $40), I can totally get behind that. But NBA Live, Elite or whatever just seems to be done. NBA 2k was excellent this year and they really improved it through patches to boot. I've been NBA 2k since PS2 heyday, and the last NBA Live game I really played was back in '98 (first one was Lakers vs Celtics if that counted). I just don't see me switching back.
