Alice: Madness Returns

I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this yet, the original was a very good game and this one has been in limbo for like 10 years. It is supposed to hit in June.

Alice: Madness Returns is being developed by Spicy Horse and puts players in the shoes of the sometimes lovable Alice in her quest to solve the murder of both her parents. The game looks to be coming along nicely and will be making its way to store shelves on June 14th.

According to CVG this game will have the original Alice with it for everyone who didn't get to play this awesome game

Alice Madness Returns will include a code allowing console players to download the original Alice game for free.

That's according to Alice overlord American McGee, who told CVG the franchise doesn't lend itself to typical perks of longevity like online multiplayer, but will boast a hefty DLC offering.

"There will be DLC in the form of dresses that the player can download and Alice can wear," he told us. "Those dresses come with special abilities and enhance how you play through the game.

"There's also going to be pretty significant release which is the original Alice brought over to the consoles so that a person who's purchased Madness Returns gets a download code and is able to bring Alice 1 onto their console and play through the entire original game alongside playing Madness Returns."

Alice: Madness Returns got its first gameplay trailer back in March. Have a look if you haven't already.

Definitely excited as I loved the first game!

I always wanted to play the first but never got to. Is this a sequel? Remake? Both?

Not sure if it's a prequel or sequel. It is definitely not a remake as the original followed the story more closely. The name would make me think it's a sequel.

I updated the OP with a little blurb about what the game is about.

Based on the title I guess American McGee has finally realized that nobody cares who American McGee is.

That's good news about the original on the consoles. That game should have been released on consoles, as it was a third-person platformer that I felt wasn't really suited to the mouse and keyboard on the PC (it had no gamepad support IIRC).

Having said that, since I've been getting back into PC gaming, that's the version I'd like to get. I hope they will include a code for a modernized PC version instead of the actual original. I figure they're going to be giving it gamepad support and making it widescreen on the consoles, they could do the same for the PC.

Great news about the original which I've never played. My interest has definitely increased as a result...

Well apparently there are quite a few achievements for the original Alice, so you might want to buy new if you want to get a complete run on those. It's 45 at amazon now for ps3 and they might change 360 soon, check the video game deal thread for the details.

Yes, and it will also include the original Alice.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

Tempted to actually buy it new (for the original Alice of course) but trying to tell myself to hold on off since I never buy anything upon release (except the Fables series). But I am hoping that this turns out to be an excellent game because honestly I never expected Alice to show up on any form for the consoles.

Dude, that's pretty fucked up. I'm thinking I might have to take up drugs so I can take some before I play this.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

PTOM gave Alice a very disappointing 5/10 review in the new issue. It sounds like a mess. I'm very close to cancelling my preorder now. I was on the fence about the game but placed an order since it was cheap on Amazon. Doesn't sound like its worth even $45 now.

BTW, anyone thinking about getting this on PC should know that the remastered original game is an exclusive through EA's download store. Some people who are very attached to Steam are upset about it.

Kedrix 06-04-11 12:44 AM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

That trailer is nine levels of f'ed up. I like it! I am hoping the 5/10 review is somebody who just doesn't get it. It might not be worth $45, but unless it is completely broken, I can't see me not trying it in the $30 range.

Decker 06-04-11 01:44 AM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

I'll still probably pick it up on some system when it hits the magic $20 price point, but that review certainly is dissuading me from getting it at launch. Sounds like a lot of tedious platforming that just drags on according to the review. Sounds like there's a lot of trippy stuff too, but not enough balance out for the boring gameplay. At least that's this reviewer's take, apparently.

Groucho 06-04-11 09:33 AM

5/10? This is madness!

Drexl 06-05-11 01:01 AM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

The review also says it moves from genre to genre, including puzzle solving, 2D adventure, side-scrolling shooting, rhythm games, and baby doll's head rolling.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

yeah, i cancelled my preorder. i will wait until it's cheaper which will likely be very quick if those are the reviews.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

I'm still keeping my pre-order. If it was a bad game why would they let reviews out this early? If it's a crap game they'd put an embargo on it.

Decker 06-05-11 09:30 AM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

That's bad logic. Last Fall, OXM published an early review of NBA Elite 11, a game so bad it got cancelled before release. Whether Alice is any good or not, the availability of an early review copy means nothing.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

The Rebel FM guys played a preview of it, and seemed somewhat pleased. I'll be picking it up at launch at Kmart (KMART!) since they have a $15 gaming coupon attached.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

I noticed it got reviewed in most of the mags I picked up at E3. I'm pretty sure Gamepro, Xbox Magazine, and Game Informer were all a 5/10. I still want to play it, but I won''t be buying it anymore.

Decker 06-09-11 11:35 AM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

Thanks for the reminder. I went and cancelled that pre-order just now.

With some credit, I'm getting both Alice 1 and 2 for a total of $30 from Amazon. I'll give it a shot. The atmosphere looks amazing...

The game looks great but now I'm realizing duke comes out the same week. I think I'll have more fun with duke than alice. Plus It seems like alice will price drop fast. I just hope they still have copies with the original alice a few months from now.

This is my concern. I think it will price drop fairly quick as well, but I really want a 2-fer and not just the new one. For years now, I have heard about how great the original was and darn it I want to give it a try (without a pc) :)

So the only way to get the original is from the download store?

It's not part of the retail (aka Amazon) version?

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

It has to be on the disc, because part of the 1000 points of achievements INCLUDE ones for the original game.

Really? In that case there's no way that the original game would be a limited-time bonus, right?

One would think. But there are certainly other games out there that screw somebody out of a possible achievement by not allowing access to one part of the material after a specified amount of time. MLB 2k11 has an achievement that you have to play on the day of the all-star game. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 just got rid of their dlc not too long ago that opened the way to several achievements due to rights. I can certainly see Alice being a snafu in some other fashion.

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

I might have to get this just for the original game, which I haven't played since I was a kid.

Also, I've always thought American McGee is one of the dumbest possible names a person could choose.

It is exclusive to the EA Store, and you can tell which one it is because it's called Alice: Madness Returns - The Complete Collection. And from what I can tell, yes, you have to download all of it. They sell a physical copy of just the new game, but when you add the collection to your cart, you only get the choice of digital delivery.

See for yourself: http://store.origin.com/store/ea/search/?keywords=alice

L.A. Noire includes base achievements that are only possible with the DLC.

Nuh uh! It shipped with 2 DLC packs available. Disc is still 1000g.

"Alice: Madness Returns, shipping on June 14, will include a one-time-use Online Pass registration code that gives players access to the original cult-classic American McGee’s Alice. Players that do not have the code can purchase American McGee’s Alice for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation®Network through the main menu of Alice: Madness Returns with the Alice: Madness Returns disc in the console. This download for the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system marks the console debut for the infamous PC hit."

Decker 06-12-11 01:57 AM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

Certainly there are other retail games that require the use of the online pass to get to a full 1000 G, but there aren't any games afaik that require use of limited or store-exclusive content to reach the 1000 G mark. So I have to assume that the original Alice is this game's "project $10" item to keep people from buying used copies, but it seems unlikely to be a limited time thing if the original Alice was indeed part of the 1000 G.

Yeah, it does sound like a part of the product as long as you buy it new. I wonder if for those of us who rather just play the original and be done with it, if we can just buy it through Marketplace/Network without having the Alice 2 game disc. It will certainly look odd on the achievements part, but those who are willing to look past the sequel might not care. :D

glassdragon 06-14-11 06:07 PM

Re: Alice: Madness Returns

I rented this tonight from BBV, with the reviews I figure it is only probably worth a rental. Bonus too, they as they always do left the dlc in the case. As far as I'm concerned if they cared about it they would have taken it out of the box. The dlc codes are just sitting in the empty cases on the shelf, so I figure they could care less about them.

You DO need the disc to play it, just editing this.
