I personally don't care at all about it. I own the first one for the 360, and I just can't get into it at all. |

Re: Nintendo Console Announced at E3 2011 (Wii U)
I just hope for Nintendo's sake that they can get "equal" multi-platform games now, and the regular controller seems a step in the right direction.

It's a bummer about Amazon. I was certainly leaning towards not getting one at launch, but I had a $200 GC for my birthday (thanks, in-laws!) that I was trying to save for a big-ticket item and was considering this. Now I'm definitely waiting a while on this system (never been much of a Nintendo fan and barely played the games I own for the Wii).

I think that what Nintendo did with the Wii, and continuing with the Wii U pretty much locked them into being able to continue to produce hardware for many years to come. I think things were obviously starting to decline into the life of the N64, and that continued with the Game Cube. I think Nintendo realized that, and went in the direction of the Wii to try to pull in more of an audience, and it worked. With the number of people who are only recently getting on board with Nintendo who never played games before (or hadn't since the NES or SNES) mixed with the hardcore Nintendo fans like myself who will always stick with them, also mixed in with how Nintendo does indeed seem to focus more on the younger crowd than the other major players, I think they have it locked in to be a major player in the hardware development for quite some time.
Even the other big two realize that with the Move and Kinect. Heck, there have even been pictures out there, which could be photoshops or something else that show a 360 type controller with a large screen in the middle of it now. While the hardware from Nintendo seems to be at least a generation, maybe a half generation behind these days, they lead the industry in other ways to this day. Pulling in new fans is what Nintendo has been known for for a while, and that is why they'll be around for quite some time in the hardware capacity than anything else. It's also quite telling that Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive. That should also keep a good portion of the hardcore gamers in general on board, or even bring some in that gave up on Nintendo already. I think the entire industry is afraid of an incoming crash once again, and they are all trying to keep that from happening by trying to bring in even more consumers to the industry. |
Re: Nintendo Console Announced at E3 2011 (Wii U)
I just preordered in store at GameStop and I was #10 at this store. They said only 30% of their allotment was available at open today, and it will be cut off before close tonight.

Fair points. Maybe it's just the crowd I hang with, but the Wii seems to have turned into almost a cultural joke. The system that everyone bought but basically never played once they got bored with the Tennis and Bowling. I don't think the Wii U will capture the same volume of casual gamers as the original, and I think the Wii turned off the core audience as well.

Nintendo associating themselves with a game like that indicates that the Wii U won't (completely) be business as usual, and I think that's a significant message.

Re: Nintendo Console Announced at E3 2011 (Wii U)
I stopped in to put some money down on a preorder yesterday and the clerks at GameStop were fucking relentless about pushing the WiiU to me and everyone else that walked in. I normally enjoy chatting a bit with the employees there because it doesn't take long before they say something incredibly dumb or misinformed. I have a mild interest in the system but they got on my nerves rather fast.

One game isn't going to do that. The Wii had a handful of rated M games also: House of the Dead, Silent Hill, Mad World, Resident Evil, Dead Rising, etc. It is going to take a lot more than one game to bring in people who are specifically looking for games like that.

Didn't a lot of those mature wii games tank too? Mad World was on clearance very quickly, and I remember the developer complaining about the sales of No More Heroes.

Speaking of COD, Where is the outline for the online structure for multiplayer gaming? Having COD means nothing without online. it takes more these days than just having a couple third party titles. Oh wait, we get a persistent map screen. Nintendo proves again, they just don't get it. They are all about doing the bare minimum to string along the core crowd without specifically catering to them. I wish they did "get it.". First Nintendo launch I'm sitting out since the NES. unfortunately they only understand money, so I gotta speak with my wallet. |

Not to mention that same argument dates back to the GameCube with the Resident Evil remake and Eternal Darkness. Courting the core requires more than having a half dozen M rated games on the system. People can joke but where the industry is right now it all starts with storage. As usual Nintendo is half ass-ing it with a paltry amount of storage. Between DLC, map packs, arcade games, and full digital titles a paltry hard drive is a big conn. Sure they can boast having CoD: Black Ops 2, but where is one to store multiple GB map packs for multiple games for years to come?
Also, I'm not sure if they're even using a hard drive for storage. It's probably some form of flash that keeps the unit compact but costs more per GB. When it comes to M-rated games, I don't really care if Nintendo publishes those. It's not their specialty, and I'd just as soon leave the M-rated stuff to third parties. Of course, you have to actually make them want to support your system. |
Re: Nintendo Console Announced at E3 2011 (Wii U)
Has it been announced just how far away from the console the Game Pad will work?
Yes, I'm essentially asking if I can use it in bed or on the toilet. There, I said it. |

Gee, I wonder if every store in the country was down to 30% at opening this AM. Or maybe corporate just told them to tell every customer the same thing...-rolleyes- |

This place is kinda scummy. Just called and was told the EXACT same thing. talking to CSR on the phone asking about Wii U. She says hold on and comes back and says "My manager just told me that when we opened this morning we only had 30% of our allotment left. If you don't preorder before the end of the day, you won't get one on release day."

If anyone wants one during the launch window, I really think it would be a good idea to preorder. |
Re: Nintendo Console Announced at E3 2011 (Wii U)
I will probably not buy this (first major gaming system I haven't bought in years, aside from the PSP Go which I don't consider major), but if they made another Eternal Darkness game I'd buy a Wii U in a heartbeat.

Re: Nintendo Console Announced at E3 2011 (Wii U)
It's funny, I was just watching the Titanic special features and James Cameron in The Final Word used the phrase "eternal darkness" and it instantly reminded me of that game. I never got to beat it, I think due to being in a situation where I would load in at a place with very low health and get killed quickly. But it was pretty damn fun. Too bad the gladiator section was so short.

I feel for game developers, but at this point I don't see any reason to get single player games like this at launch, since they all drop like a rock in price within a few months. Though if I get a Wii U (and I'm weak to new consoles, so if I can get one I probably will), I'll probably get it just to play something... It's published by Nintendo, so does that mean that it's not just a timed exclusive (like RE4 was)? Uhm...I'm not seeing if this is in HD or not? Will Nintendo finally go HD? |
