I've read similar comments from a number of people today. It's making me seriously reconsider my plans to (eventually) download the game.

For PS+ members, RE 1, RE2, RE3 for free and RE 4 for $10. At that price, it's probably worth getting all of them. Maybe.

Spoiler:
Code Veronica actually was going to be RE4 at one time. However, back then the RE franchise was only on the PS1, and Capcom decided to keep the numbered releases as Playstation-only. Since Code Veronica was a Dreamcast title, they dropped the number 4 from the title.

Whoops, already bought ResEvil4 for $10. Eh well. I have the GCN version, and I love it. But at the same time, that one was only available in non-anamorphic widescreen. Sorry, but I'm not playing that way, or zoomed in, on my HDTV...

Does the PS3 RE4 have move support so it can control like the Wii version?

Downloaded RE1 and gave it a spin just for fun. Holy crap that game has not aged well.

I bet most of those PS and others of that era haven't aged well. The RE for the GC was badass. Still holds up well...kind of sad that they aren't putting that one forward. Good thing I still have a GC for RE4 and RE.

The graphics of RE1-3 have aged poorly, and the Japanese translated dialogue is even worse, but they are still fun to play in my opinion. That's all that matters to me. I will take RE1-3 over RE4-5 any day.
I do agree that the RE1 Gamecube remake was simply awesome, and the Cube hardware was powerful enough that the graphics would still hold up today if they just raised the resolution to HD. I wish they would remake 2 and 3 in the same fashion, but instead they gave us those crappy light gun shooter games on the Wii. Capcom has gone almost as batshit crazy with the RE games as George Lucas has with Star Wars.

Because she is the master of unlocking...
But yeah, I agree that the 2D PS1 games hold up a lot better than the 3D PS1 games. I think that is because by that time 2D graphics had been pretty much perfected while 3D was in its infancy. That isn't to say that 2D always holds up well. 2D in its infancy was just as ugly as 3D PS1 games (just look at old Atari 2600 and NES games that haven't held up well).

On the other hand, Mario 64 (another early 3D game) came out the same year and still holds up, IMHO.

Now i want to import that. I really wish we'd get that boxed set instead of crappy downloads. Hell it might be even fun to play through the games again to hear the original Japanese voices.

It's a function of the way we expect a cartoon character to look and move verses the advancements of graphics in regards to humans. We are much more used to more realistic people in games now and stilted robotic human characters don't hold up nearly as well. It's not the fault of the PS1 -- I think the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games hold up very well. I play them from time to time on my PSP and still enjoy them.

Yeah it goes back to the whole uncanny valley thing about realistic graphics being too realistic. We don't scrutinize cartoony graphics the same way we scrutinize realistic graphics. So that's why Mario and Zelda appear to have aged better than Resident Evil 1-3 and Metal Gear Solid, but really the N64 has aged just as much. Compare the Ocarina of Time 3DS remake to the original N64 and it shows the N64 has aged just as much. Link on the N64 was just as "blocky" looking as RE and MGS on the PS1.

I played a good chunk of the game this weekend (got to the part where you first run into Ada Wong). I think graphically it's fine. I'm satisfied with my purchase, it's a fun game.
