Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

demo was good...but it actually got me to cancel my preorder...Redbox is going to have it so I will rent it to see if I like it before putting down 60 bucks...

I hope the coop stuff is good...can't wait to read reviews on that part of it...

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

I played the demo as well. At first, I had no clue what I was doing...but I got thru it just fine with a couple of replays here and there. Man, is that sucker gory! Heads flying off, bodies ripped apart and all sorts of appendages flying about in bloody glory. I liked it a lot, but I am glad I will be reviewing it rather than having to go and buy it. I'm not sure if this would have a long shelf life with me especially since I'm still knee deep in Skyrim.

I played the demo last night and found it fun but looks like it can get repetitive. Anyone buy this yet?

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

Yep, just finished the campaign. It was a fun, but short game. Once I started to get the hang of things, and upgrading all my attacks and powers, the game was over. I'd say playtime was around 6-7 hours. There is a game+ mode that carries over all of your upgrades.

There are a bunch of side missions to play alone or co-op, but unless you're an achivement whore, don't bother, because they are very repetitive.

It's been years since I played the first one, but I feel the first was better of the two games. Unless you're a huge fan of the first game and comic book, I'd say wait for a price drop.

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

I just finished it too. It was fun. I heard it was a little short so I rented it. Played for an hour or two each night since Tuesday. I'd say around 7 hours for me on the campaign. I had the day off and played around with the so called multi-player a bit but don't see any big replay value there. It's more like stuff cut out of the game that you can run through solo or with friends.
I definitely enjoyed it, but it is repetitive and kinda short, so I'd say rent or pick up used in a month or two.
BTW, without giving too much away, the game has two endings, make sure you play both. It gives you the opportunity to do the other after completing the first.

Thanks guys

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

Disappointing to hear the game is so short. Maybe I'm just spoiled with games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, etc. on the market. I really enjoyed the first one, but it sounds like the sequel isn't anything to get excited about.

It seems that first-person-shooters are getting shorter and shorter - the average length used to be around 8 hours now, thanks to the CoD franchise and throwing all this multiplayer shit at us, they're content to give us campaigns that are around 5 hours.

I agree. I hardly ever buy FPSs anymore. I can usually do a 5 day rental once or twice at Family Video and get through the campaign and play enough of the MP to be satisfied. I'm only out 8-15 bucks and have played it as much as I care to. Games like Grand Theft and Borderlands which I know will take a while, I buy. I've almost wrapped up Just Cause 2 and have around 30 hours logged, so that was worth it. :)

Back on topic, Darkness is definitely worth playing, I had a lot of fun.

I Redboxed this today. I only got to play it for an hour or so and it's "OK" to me. I found myself saying "I should just throw in Skyrim or MW3", so it definitely didn't hook me. Gotta love the Redbox!

My copy will ship out today (my webmaster got it on Saturday), so hopefully I will be able to play and review it this weekend (if I get enough playing time in). I liked the demo, so I hope that the game is more of the same. We shall see.

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

4/5 when it is all said and done. Very fun game, awesome story but it is a pretty easy game. My review should be up when I get home (just need to research a couple pieces of music that show up in the game). If I had to assign a dollar value, I would say in the $25-$30 range.

Edit: It's Up :)

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

I enjoyed the game enough. I rented it from redbox. I played the first run on normal and that took maybe 5 hours, but at least an hour was forced cinemas that you could not skip (if you played you know what I am talking about) and me trying to find all the relics. I planned on taking it back, but I found the game easy enough that I decided to do a run on the hardest difficulty. With your upgrades it was actually easier, and I timed it at 3.5 hours.

There is the coop, and that was ok solo, but I am sure it would be a lot better with friends. I will say they give you a crap load of coop stuff to do. The campaign is another 2 hours, and the hit lists can easily be another 3 hours of fun.

Overall an easy 1000/1000 achievements, but a little empty for me. 7 out of 10.

I rented it last night. I haven't played the first one, so I might be missing out on some of the experience. Didn't enjoy the few hours I played last night. It's so over-the-top with the gore that it loses the "giggle factor" that gory games usually provide -- this one was just gross. Also the executions that get repeated again and again were tiresome. Maybe there's a way to get more of them, but I kept seeing the same two or three and it got old. Plus have any of you guys had the glitch when you're executing a guy and another one comes up to melee you? You get this weird Dali-like mixed perspective that really looks odd.
The boss fight with the crane was just silly and annoying, with clown-car bad guys just pouring in to fight you in an endless stream -- I'm sure the bad guys have thousands of lackeys who just can't wait to take on a guy with serpents coming out of his shoulders while a wrecking ball keeps strafing overhead. And the darkling who keeps on pissing and farting on all the corpses before they magically disappear?
I feel like the mechanics are there and this could have been a fun game, maybe if it were more a stealth-based game like AC, but as it is, I didn't think it was a very compelling FPS. 5/10.

Upgrade your talents and you will start to see more. Once you start doing more than health executions and move on to ammo, shield, etc you will see more. I think there are about ten of them. Furthermore, yeah it is a little gross but no more so than an Alien movie.

It's a quick fight if you pay attention so it has no real chance to get silly and annoying. The guys are vital because you can get much more ammo from them to shoot the crane. Plus the darkling helps you with propane tanks occasionally.

One of the best parts of the game, the darkling that is? Yeah, he does his own thing with pissing and farting but he's pretty funny and he plays a very important part of the story. Plus when you get to play as him for certain parts and if you upgrade your talents (once again), you can throw him around for even more fun.

Each his own I guess. I'm on my second play through. I stick with my 8/10 rating. The story is really really good. But I like mindf***s. Sorry, it didn't hold any appeal for you. It's a short game though, it kinda looks like you played it for an hour and then sent it back so to speak, try it for a little longer eh monkey? (people who have played the game will realize that's not an insult :)).

Thank you, I do appreciate your insight. Maybe I didn't give it a totally fair shake. I just felt it wasn't for me. Maybe I'll give it another rent since the free Redbox promo got extended for another week and seems unlimited, as foolish as that may be.
I thought you had to wait for the Darkling to bring you tanks to take out the crane -- that's why it took me a while.

No problem. :). I mean, it's true since I reviewed it, I played it a lot more than perhaps an average player but I'm glad I did. I think on an average game rack, it would have probably sat there for me or if I bought it, it would have stayed in my pile of shame. Which really is a shame. Now I need to go back and play the first one, which is in my pile of shame. But I'm going to work through the second play through and vendettas first. Not sure I'll go online though for the specific online only vendetta missions though. That's a bit much.

BTW, learn how to grab just about anything when you play. Guns only get you so far, careful use of your left and right (for swiping and slashing) arm are so important in tight spots.

funny...but on my don difficulty run, I found that I mostly used my guns and swarm/gun channeling...in fact when those two are charged up just about every fight is over in seconds.

I'm doing the middle difficulties, maybe that's why. But you are absolutely right about swarming, I find myself using that a lot more on the second go-thru. Gun channeling is good stuff, I dunno I guess I like using the arms and bugs more :).

don't want to get into spoilers...but the boss in the cemetery...swarm kept him in place, and I took about 60% of his health bar in one gun channeling on don difficulty.

It really was easier on new game plus with your upgrades, even though I played the harder difficulty.

Oooh, the guy in cementary was the boss I had the hardest time with. Even the end guys were fairly easy to me because I was upgraded by then. Furthermore, I didn't have swarm (I went for other tiers) at that point. THANKS for the tip:)

Re: THE DARKNESS II announced

Started this last night. Only played about an hour but was having a blast.

I miss the realistic look & feel of the first one but love the graphic novel style intro. The in game cel-shaded stuff kinda falls between the two which kinda sucks. I think they could have gone full blown stylized and the game would have been better for it. It definitely would have helped it stand out from the FPS pack. I'm glad they brought back Jackie talking to us during the loading screens, but again, it should have been done in the graphic novel style of the intro. Standing up the cel shading look to the original just looks bad.

I know it's short, but it already feels totally worth the $5-$10, or whatever it was, I dropped on it.

Wow this game just blew me away., I didn't want it to end. The Jackie and Jenny story is what kept me sucked in. They did an incredible job with that.
Spoiler:
RIP Darkling

It's a damn shame that many more people didn't buy this game, I think is gonna be in my top 5 this year.

Playing the Vendetta missions, short but fun. I'm playing with Shoshanna. Should complete them by tomorrow and hopefully can also do the HIT LIST missions.

Please somehow release a part 3!, especially after the ending.

100% agree. I did my own little promotional part and recommended it to just about every close friend I knew. It really is a fantastic game, hands down. The funny thing is that it made me pick up the first couple of Darkness Origins graphic novels and while it is a good book, I found the game much better at conveying emotion and really bring a sense of tragedy to this character. The comic book at times just seems like a bad ass in pretty comic pages when the character is so much more.

Excellent game, I hope for a part 3 too. They certainly leave the door open for it.
