Just to help you out, one mine (in the water) can't be seen with "Survival Instinct" or whatever they call it. But you can see it if you use the rifle with scope. That was the one I had the hardest time with. Just hit all the furthest accessible parts of the level that overlook the ocean and use the rifle zoom view.

Finished Last night with 99%, that damn mine that you need to use the rifle for must have been the 1% I missed damnit! Best game I've played in a long time.
I booted up the game, traveled to the beach (now daylight) and found the mine within about 2 minutes. |

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
AFAIK, steelbooks were the only versions of TR Target had for sale - if they have the game in stock at all, it'll be in a steelbook, at least for a while.

I thought it was only the first shipment, ah well.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Is there any news on what the upcoming DLC will be for this? Will it be solid single-player stuff, like more tombs and/or new locations on the island, or will it be lame multiplayer stuff?
|
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
The only announced DLC so far is the multiplayer map pack coming next week (see here).

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
The official Tomb Raider Facebook page has a free Xbox dashboard theme up for grabs. There's also a Lara Croft outfit for female avatars.

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Grabbed one of the themes. Thank you for the heads up on that.

Trying hard to resist the forum effect. However deep down I know this will be $20-$30 soon since it's a Ubisoft game. :P

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
I know I'm way late to this party and stating the obvious, but damn it's a great game. So polished, sharp and well acted. Really shows that they took their time to make it work. I've played for four hours tonight and really enjoyed everything about it so far. Just upgraded to where I can fight with her axe -- you'd think her keen survival instinct would have kicked in that little factoid before now, but whatever. It's such a cool game, so up my alley.
And I agree with whoever said this game is Uncharted meets Lost much moreso than a Tomb Raider game. Still, I pretty much love it. Wish it were T rated though so I could play it in front of the kids. Not like it would be any worse without the F bombs and the graphic violence. |
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Finished the game at 79%. I don't think i'll bother with multiplayer, and i'm not sure that i'll go back to get 100% since i'm not much of a completionist. Overall, really fun experience. The story was a bit hokey, and I wish they did a little bit more with the secondary characters or at least establishing who they were, since I barely knew some of their names or cared much about them or Lara's relationship with them.
Still, great action and I liked it more then Uncharted 1 and 3 as far as gameplay goes (not so much in story). The pacing between exploration and fighting sequences were just really well done which kept me moving along without getting stale or feeling like I was wasting my time exploring since the upgrade and skill system is fairly well done despite thinking it was a bit silly early on. The weapons end up waaay powerful towards the end with all/most of the upgrades. |

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Oh and the game appears to be up close to 1.5m sold at this point, not bad for a couple weeks, and a good sign for future sequels

Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
So is this like Uncharted somewhat?
|
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
It's a darker version of Uncharted with a little more freedom (while linear it doesn't feel nearly as "on rails" as Uncharted does), more satisfying combat and better pacing. The story, set pieces and characters (outside of Lara) aren't as good as Uncharted 2s but imo it's more fun (I hate to sound like a broken record but I really hated combat in Uncharted). Add in a little bit of Lost and you have a good idea on what to expect.
|
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
I think that sums it up nicely. Combat is more fun here. Exploring the environment is pretty close, both are fun, this is more open world, though. Both have great set pieces and great graphics. I like the acting and characters in Uncharted a lot more, but other than that, I think this is better. The game progression and RPG-like upgrade system here is just fantastic. Weapon upgrading is fun too.

I'd put Tomb Raider somewhere between Uncharted and TR: Underworld in terms of linearity. I loved the Uncharted games but the constant ushering you down corridors feel of the game is a huge detractor in a game that's billed as an adventure game. Underworld was the most open feeling TR game letting you tackle puzzles and challenges in a vast landscape in any order you want. The new one is probably closer to Uncharted. There's still only 1 route to the exit of the area, but not as guilty of forcing you down a specific 'glowy' path like Uncharted. |
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Gameplay-wise, it's probably closer to Arkham City than Uncharted 2, except you rely far more on weapons than melee fighting. And there are less puzzles to solve here than Batman had, just lots and lots of collectables to search and find.
I find myself upgrading Survival skills far more than health and combat here, which is unusual for me. The reason is I really want to find everything I can on the first playthrough and upgrade my gear as much as possible. There really isn't much of a death penalty with super-frequent auto-saves, so having more health or better shooting accuracy isn't nearly as important for me as it would usually be. |
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
I may have to change my vote in the "favorite game of this generation thread".
I have been particularly impressed with how well done the parts are with the really strong winds. Such an amazing amazing game all around. |
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Sounds like we played a very similar game Decker.

I did have to force myself to use the weapons (for achievements) when I would have rather just used the bow through the entire game. However, the finishing moves with weapons were pretty cool once unlocked. I unlocked them on the last few areas so I didn't get to use them that much.

The bow upgrades were fun but you could hit a guy in the chest, set him on fire and he still wouldn't die. I'd set him on fire and headshot him when he's running around trying to put the fire out. Also, using fire and explosives results in less salvage since the body could burn up to nothing by the time you get to it. Or in the case of explosives either just blow them to nothing or it knocks them off a perch to where you can't get salvage. |
Re: Tomb Raider (a.k.a. Tomb Raider 9)
Good to hear that about melee. I think I would prefer to fight some of these a-holes rather than sniping them all the time. Shooting arrows point-blank seems somehow unsporting. I also wonder if shooting someone in the head with an arrow would really cause them to crumple in instant death like headshots with a gun would. I suspect in real life it would just make for a very pissed-off bad guy with an arrow sticking out of his head, but in the context of the game, I'll just roll with it.
One thing they did that I like is here you're able to change costumes at any time in the first playthrough -- something Batman prohibited for some unknown reason. With my Best Buy pre-order I got an Aviatrix costume DLC where she can dress up like Amelia Earhart with a bomber jacket and everything. It sort of looks badass, but somehow I end up preferring to play her in her default low-cut wet tank-top. Guess I'm just a purist at heart. |
