Disabled gamers are asking for button mapping
A gamer named Chuck Bittner is pissed because it's 2010 and there's still a serious lack of button mapping in games. Fifteen years ago his C5 vertebra was severed in a car accident, but that hasn't stopped him from gaming. Now 35 and quadriplegic, he still puts people through the wringer in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Bittner told Plugged In that he went 30 - 0 online in MW2, but it was without doing things that we take for granted, like using a sight and firing at the same time. His problem is that the trigger and the sight are at opposite ends of the controller. If he's that good, you can bet he'd be even better with the ability to button map and actually use his sights.
Frusturated, Bittner started a petition to get button mapping in popular games. He says that the petition is not just about him, and that many struggle with the limitations of console controls. The petition now is 3,000 signatures strong. When it hits 10,000, Bittner plans to send it to game studios and console makers.
If you're for button mapping and/or helping people that need it to game, maybe you could help his petition out.

-I think button mapping can be a useful tool for not just disabled gamers but for gamers in general. I hope this happens.

One of my biggest gripes about Halo Reach. Button mapping should be a standard feature in every game.

There's no technical reason. It's just something they decided on upon testing and design choices. They really should just be suggestions anyway.

I just signed. 7223 signatures as of now. It's absurd that button mapping isn't standard on games at this point. Heaven forbid we should be able to play in a way that's more natural and/or comfortable.

It's just bizarre that this isn't standard yet. Why do I get maybe 4 choices of their premapped suggestions? Leave those in, and add one or two options that are completely customizable.

PC games have had customizable button mapping for as long as I can remember. Some old DOS games didn't, but practically all Windows games do. Console games are waaaay behind on button mapping.

Button remapping should be a standard feature. In fact, it really should be built into the development framework so that all games can support it with almost no effort.
Also seems like there should be some 3rd party controller that can remap its buttons in its hardware. No idea if such a thing exists though.

What's funny is I swear button mapping was more standard in the past on consoles.

Re: Disabled gamers are asking for button mapping
Seems like a reasonable request especially since you can do this on PC games. I recently started playing Killzone 2 after a long hiatus and I'm so accustomed to the Call of Duty MW2 controls I was getting my ass kicked. Much to my surprise Sony included a button mapping that is exactly like MW2 so I switched to that. It still doesn't control very well IMHO but it's better.

Button mapping should be an option in every game, but petition online is not the way to get it done. Has one of those things ever achieved anything? It would be far more effective to send snail mail to the game companies about the issue.
