What would you do? RRoD

Well it finally happened, my xbox360 got the red ring of death (fuck me). It's out of warranty so getting it repaired by Microsoft is 100 bucks. (by the way it's just the standard 20GB version). My question to you is this...should I spend $100 for Microsoft to fix it, buy a used one off amazon or ebay for $100-150, or wait until I have the cash to buy one of the new shiny black ones for $299. Why do i have to wait? well obviously I don't have the cash right now, and I'm in the process of finding a better paying job. The thing is I play pretty regularly, so it would suck waiting possibly weeks to play again.
Also, if I were to buy a used one it would be a 120GB...how do you transfer saved game info from one hard drive to the next?

all I know is I would never buy a used 360. You're bound to be buying someone elses impending RROD.

Re: What would you do? RRoD

let me add that I was looking to upgrade anyway because I barely had any memory left on my 20GB version, so that eliminates choice #1. That being said, 120GB or 250GB is very nice, but honestly completely unnecessary for me..60GB would be more than enough. My main concern now is warranty.

fair enough...but would you buy one if it came with a 2 year warranty?

personally, I would not buy one used with or w/o the warranty. But that's just me. Especially if it's coming from someone on CL or ebay.

Since you want an upgrade, I would keep my eyes out on certain other sites
Spoiler:
Slickdeals
as there are deals constantly being posted. Especially through Dell with various coupons.

If you decide to stay at the 20gb level, you can still find some of those for $150 and add the extra warranty. Then sell your broken one to re-coop some of your money.

Not sure about that as I own a PS3. But perhaps it's the same thing I once saved my game saves on a USB, formatted my HDD and setup a new account but when I attempted to move my game saves it didn't let me.

Maybe each system/accounts have different codes, like you wont be able to play your saves on a friends xbox, so you might not be able to move your game saves from your current XBox to your new one. You can definitely logon to your account to get your achievements on any xbox but as for playing your game saves on an xbox that isn't the original xbox where you saved those games that might be a different story.

And definitely buy a new one over a used one because the person you might buy a used one from might have had it for a year and it could be a repaired xbox. Not everyone is honest in their descriptions. For piece of mind I think a new xbox is the way to go.

I thought the same thing when I got a 250GB PS3, however, having to never worry about space again is pretty fantastic. I don't regret it one bit...

I was going to suggest that you could buy one from Target and use it while you're RRoD console is getting repaired. Maybe not entirely ethical, but it'd get you thru the pinch.

Re: What would you do? RRoD

I decided in the long run the best thing was to buy a new 360 Slim from Amazon, so I ordered one today. It didn't hurt that they had a 6 month no interest financing offer

Re: What would you do? RRoD

I thought XBOX will always fix the RRoD even if it's out of warranty. Mine was out of warranty when I sent it in and they didn't charge me.

You could fix it yourself. That's what I ended up doing with the help of my brother and a few tutorials.

Re: What would you do? RRoD

Nope, my warranty expired in 2008 and it would have cost me 99 dollars to repair.

I did "repair" it with the towel trick, and sold it got a nice little discount on my purchase of the Slim because of it.

Did you try to call and see if they would repair it? I've heard of folks getting it fixed for free after the 3 year warranty is up.

No I didn't, but as I said it was only the original 20GB edition, and I needed more space.

Yeah but I'm pretty sure they would've replaced it.

Thinking about getting one next year when the latest edition of "The Show" comes out

I had planned to replace it with a Slim around Christmas, just ended up being earlier than I expected.
