It's a sad state of affairs if I'm posting DLC news:

DLC Week of 12/4 - The Black Crowes 3 Pack!
Hey gang,

The Black Crowes rocketed to success in the ‘90s with a blues-rock sound and throwback vibe that was a revival of some of the biggest rock acts of the’ 70s. With a string of successful mainstream singles and awards, The Black Crowes have cemented themselves in rock history among the legendary acts that have influenced their trademark sounds.

“The Black Crowes Pack 01” kicks off December’s Rock Band downloadable tracks with three hits that helped jumpstart the band to success early in their career. “She Talks to Angels” is the fourth single from the band’s critically acclaimed debut record, 1990’s Shake Your Money Maker. “Remedy,” from the group’s second record, 1992’s The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, reached #1 on the Billboard Album Rock track charts, and stayed there for 11 weeks! The final single off of The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, “Sometimes Salvation” rounds out the three-pack.

As a bonus, Rock Band Blitz players who play any songs by The Black Crowes will earn double coins for each play!

Gonna pass this week. I probably would have picked up "Hard to Handle" if they offered it. It seems like it would be a fun song to play/sing, but I have no interest in the cover version that's been in the store for years.

The cover version isn't bad, and its not like the Black Crowes version isn't a cover as well.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

That's true. It's just after many years, you kinda get used to hearing it a certain way and covers can sound "off". But some are better than others. My mind tends to go to the worst, like the imitator's vocals on "Tom Sawyer", which was cringeworthy. (And luckily remedied later on with the original as DLC).

But I do recall that on one of the early Guitar Hero games there's a Stone Roses cover that sounds almost identical to the original, even the vocals.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I'll definitely pick up two of the three songs. More than likely I'll just get the whole pack.

I have to say HMX really is doing a solid job getting middle to upper tier artists into the game. I've kinda given up on the elite artists...but I think DLC overall has been pretty solid, even if it's a small amount per week.

What are we considering elite artists at this point? Just wondering.

I'd consider U2, Zep, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Snow to be top tier musical acts.

Obviously, it's all personal opinion, but, in my mind, these are pretty good examples of the biggest acts out there to have either no or limited representation in the game thus far.

Feel free to agree, disagree, add to the list, or ignore altogether! :)

I don't know if Metallica and Van Halen are still under Guitar Hero exclusive rights, but they would be considered elite. Scorpions and Dokken are other popular bands that would fit perfect with this game. More 80's thrash would be nice too, Overkill, Testament, Exodus, Kreator, Metal Church, etc.

Has U2 ever given music rights to any anything? The only thing that comes to mind was that special edition ipod. I just don't ever see this happening for a game unless all proceeds and profits went to some cause that U2 stands behind and even then it seems like something too "frivolous" for Bono to get involved in.

LZ. I believe the hang up there is Page. He does not want anyone meddling with his masters and will not let them out of his sight...but somehow NBC got approval to put a song in some lame drama about a power outage? OK.

The Rolling Stones. They have some songs in games already but not sure why they cant get them all together and bundle them as a pack and toss in some other fan favorites. Plus they just started a new tour which would have been a good promo tie in.

Pink Floyd. I don't think they license their songs for anything either.

Snow. I have never heard of Snow, honestly.

Maybe there is some hope. Maybe with the next gen of consoles we will get RB:4 and new chance to get maybe one or two songs on disc from some of these elites.

I want some ELO dammit!

And throw in some Traveling Wilburys for good measure.

I would think that the terms are either close to done or are done for Metallica and VH. GH:Metallica came out in March 2009. VH was released in Dec. 2009. Anyone know how long the agreements are 3,4 or 5 years?

Scorpions and Dokken. Personally I would love to get, Dokken especially. But are they really elite enough now? I'm still surprised we got Cinderella. I'm all for more 80's stuff. Way too many to mention from the 80's but I'm biased.
ZZ Top, John Cougar, Asia?

I remember that U2 was interested a few years ago, but they wanted something with their likenesses like the Beatles game. I thought (and hoped) we would get a game dedicated to them at some point, but I guess the downturn of the genre hurt the chances of that.

Yup.
Eurythmics,. The Kinks, Bob Seger, Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Dead Milkmen, Dire Straits, Clapton, The Fixx, Genesis, Phil Collins, George Michael, Wham, Greg Kihn, The Hooters, INXS, The Nails, Jim Carroll Band, Oran 'Juice' Jones, Peter Gabriel, Prince, The Pretenders (do they have anything besides the holiday pack inclusion of Blue Christmas?), Rod Stewart, Soft Cell (very surprised Tainted Love isn't already in it), The Tubes... And aside from The Pretenders, these are all artists that have nothing in game already. there are lots more from those already in, and an almost endless supply of one hit wonders just from '80s new wave alone.

Kelkee 12-05-12 11:51 AM

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I believe there are Dire Straits, and INXS tracks. "Walk of Life" and "Need you Tonight" are both in.

Whoops, you're right. I completely forgot about them being on-disc tracks for RB3.

The RHCP and Soundgarden deals were obviously made null-and-void by the GH collapse. Contrary to popular belief these exclusive deals don't give companies like Activision the legal ability to just sit on the rights to an artist's material when they have no plan to use them. It's usually called a "use it or lose it" contract. These bands are potentially losing money by being exclusive to a platform that no longer exists to release their content, especially when the competitor is still producing and releasing content.

In the case of RHCP there's probably some alternate universe where RHCP Guitar Hero came out with the new album packed-in but Guitar Hero wasn't around to release music from their new album day-and-date with the album release itself and Rock Band was so of course that deal isn't going to be upheld.

Hell yeah! "Possum Kingdom" is one of my most wanted '90s alt rock songs for RB. I just wish it was released this week since I have a RB party tomorrow night.

Guitar Hero didn't "collapse". Activision is still in business and they still hold the rights to the Guitar Hero franchise. It's their position that they are taking a hiatus from the franchise, but never announced that there would never be another Guitar Hero project. If they had an enforceable contract before, it should still be in effect for the length of the term. Now whatever DMB, Eric Clapton, Kid Rock and John Mayer signed with Power Gig, that's probably a different story.
