I called my local GS. They said I could do the system trade in program for the Slim minus the hard drive, pay remaining balance for the Slim, take it home and do the transfer, bring back the old hard drive with receipt for the Slim, and then get the increased trade in program price for the hard drive refunded back to me (in cash if I paid the remaining balance in cash or credit if I used credit).
Probably YMMV so call your local store first.

So you only need the old HD itself to do the transfer, not the old console? I can pop the HD off my Elite console, take the console to trade in, keep the old HD in the meantime and transfer the data to the new one?
Sorry...the guide at xbox.com isn't terribly clear.

you need the transfer cable. your old hd hooks up to that, the cable plugs into the new system, with the HD attached, and it'll transfer everything over.

Was just wondering if the old HD needs to be...er...powered by anything I guess.

I thought about putting my Elite on Craigslist, just to see if I could get more there, but after checking some listings and verifying what I'm getting from Gamestop it's just not worth the effort. So I will just wait for the call from Gamestop.

Re: Say Hello to the Slim Xbox 360
I know this its pretty soon to be reporting anything with the new slim but after spending 5 hours or so last night playing MW2 and then today it's been on gaming between me and the wife for another 7 hours or so, the thing is SUPER quiet compared to my old system. The disc drive and fan are barely audible and the wireless has had no hiccups so far.
Again I know it's only been 24 hours but figured I'd throw it out there.

Quick question regarding the GameStop deal: http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/x...e/default.aspx
Does that $100 trade-in work even if it's an older 360? I have a Pro and if I can do the $100 trade-in, then I'm going for it.

It should work for any 360. As long as the seal is intact.
I need to transfer my saves before I trade in mine. Can I use any flash drive, like a small 2gb keychain drive?

I think he's referring to the dvd/media remotes not the controllers.

No way to know until you try. The 360 does a benchmark test on it before it'll create its partition.

Re: Say Hello to the Slim Xbox 360
I reserved one at Gamestop as well. They said they expected new stock on July 9th (!), so I suppose I'll be waiting a while unless I decide before then to just go the tax-free Amazon route and sell the old system(s) online.
Damn you Gamestop for having a pretty awesome trade-in deal! I'm considering handing over both my old Elite and Arcade units, along with all accessories, and getting the new one essentially free. The Arcade really doesn't get used anyway, it was more of a backup system in the event of an RROD emergency.

I still had my launch system (with an upgraded 120gb hard drive) and with the gamestop deal, I got an upgraded system (bigger hd and hdmi output) that runs super quiet for a whopping $83 including tax after trading in my 360, headsets, hard drive, network adapter, and edge bonus! Woo! HDMI makes a huge difference from component cables. I was pretty surprised at exactly how big of a difference it made.

This thing is indeed dead quiet. I have mixed feelings about the new avatar and dashboard scheme (far different than the "blade" dashboard). But Netflix seems to run a little better than on the PS3, and Last.fm is a nice addition. I was happy to see that MS kept track of my arcade purchases and allowed me to download them all again... 2.5 years later.
I bought DEAD RISING again with the console... so I'm back to the Willamette Mall. Now to earn back the megablaster.

I will likely get one now as they have fixed the 2 major concerns that I had.. Well supposedly the Valhalla chip fixes RROD, and the built in wireless. With those improvements it may be time to give it another chance.
