Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
Sessler (kinda) agrees with Ebert here in that videogames aren't necessarily art, but that doesn't make them any less worthy.
Some good, level-headed points: <param name="movie" value="http://g4tv.com/lv3/45457" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed src="http://g4tv.com/lv3/45457" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" name="VideoPlayer" width="480" height="382" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" /></object><div style="margin:0;text-align:center;width:480px;font-family:Arial,sans-serif;font-size:12px;color:#FF9B00;"><a href="http://g4tv.com/games/ps3/index" style="color:#FF9B00;" target="_blank">PS3 Games</a> - <a href="http://g4tv.com/e32010" style="color:#FF9B00;" target="_blank">E3 2010</a> - <a href="http://g4tv.com/games/ps3/43506/flower/index" style="color:#FF9B00;" target="_blank">Flower</a></div> |

I don't know man, I think there's a hell of a lot of early silent films that would've classified as art from Birth of a Nation in 1915, to The Kid in 1921 and DeMille's original 10 Commandments in 1923, not to mention many of the early great directors worked during that era from VonStorheim to Pabst to Murnau, who all showed artistic expression in film was in full effect long before the Oscars.

Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
So my creative partner and I wrote a letter to Roger Ebert and also posted it on our blog... and this happened: http://twitter.com/ebertchicago/status/13099825206
Just a small thing, but what an awesome guy. |
Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
Ebert now says he should have kept his mouth shut. He of course peppers his blog entry with nothing but violent video game images.
http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2010...n_my_lawn.html After this grab for hits, he'll retract the retraction. |

Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
That's a fine rebuttal but Shadow of the Colossus? What a turd.
I'm impressed at some of the well thought out responses though. Much better than the GameSpot/IGN type replies I expected. this one is just mean though: Well it looks like mr ebert finds games to be......*puts on sunglasses* too jawdropping YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH |

Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
Man that's a really half-hearted, insincere apology. Now I can sort of see why that type of apology seem to always piss my wife off so much.

Honestly, while it looks fantastic and invokes an amazing sense of scale and mood, it plays like an absolute turd - just horrible, turgid controls with a terrible, wonky camera that makes things even worse.

Alright, since my 360 is out for repairs I bumped this to the top of my Gamefly queue to see what the hype was about. Got it in the mail today, went through 3 Colossi so far. I even read through this entire thread just to get my bearings. Here is my response: :hscratch: :wtf: [rant] How this game got such high marks and is regarded so well is blowing my mind. An average of 91 on Metacritic? Seriously, wtf game did I get from Gamefly? I'll give the concept an A, but actual execution? D- First there is the paper thin plot. Our androgynous hero needs to kill 16 bosses to awaken sleeping beauty for a lesbian(?) affair? Why? Then there is the barren wasteland of an overworld that simply exists to pad out the gameplay. Move to the atrocious controls which have nothing on the gawd awful camera. Then there is the horse with equally shitty controls. Shit, Epona from a Zelda game a generation prior controlled better than this gimped pony. Toss in a little screen tearing and clipping and you have yourself a nice recipe for mediocrity. After fighting the camera and controls for 30 minutes on the third boss I threw in the towel. It's already back in the Gamefly envelope. I will give Team Ico credit for the idea and the huge bosses (even though I only saw 3). Loved the idea, hate pretty much everything else about it. [/rant] |

There were even a half dozen or so agreeing with my take, in the game thread. You even replied superfro. So it may be a case of time. An "it was great for its time, but didn't hold up well at all" type thing.
I'll let you know when I finally get to revisit it with the HD repackage of ICO/SotC for the PS3 they're gonna make that I dream every night about. |
Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
Video games are a relatively new medium compared to books, newspapers, radio, film, tv, just only originating in the 70s so of course it will go through all of these putdowns before it's regarded more seriously, but it already has in the 00s what with some serious actors like Brando, Pacino, etc. lending voice work and John Carpenter being a gamer. I'm pretty sure when cinema was only 40 years old somewhere in the 1920s/30s it wasn't as highly regarded as now, although even Lenin said cinema is the strongest of all the arts to utilize.

Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
Can't believe all the hate for SOTC. One of the few games I beat, sold, regretted, then had to re buy. Still one of my top 5 PS2 games of all time.

Re: Roger Ebert: Video Games Can Never Be Art
If could only go back in time once, and had the choice between killing Hitler and killing the development of SOTC -- I would choose the latter!

Yes, add me to the SOTC was a turd camp. Shame since Ico was such a fantastic game. |
