Infinity Ward co-founders Respawn at EA
Today, Jason West and Vince Zampella, creators of the multi-billion dollar Call of Duty franchise, announced the formation of a new development studio -- Respawn Entertainment. The move positions the Respawn Entertainment leadership team as the owners of the intellectual property they create. The company will focus on creating state-of-the-art gaming experiences for global audiences. The studio is currently assembling a world-class team of designers, artists and engineers. Applicants can submit resumes to [email protected].
Respawn is pleased to also announce that it has awarded Electronic Arts , through the distinguished EA Partners program, exclusive worldwide publishing and distribution rights to future games. Terms were not disclosed. West and Zampella are represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
"Respawn Entertainment marks a fresh start for Jason and me," said Vince Zampella, General Manager of Respawn Entertainment. "For the past decade we led a great development team and poured our hearts into creating an epic game franchise. We're very proud of what we built – and proud that so many millions of fans enjoyed those games. Today we hope to do it all over again -- open a new studio, hire a great team, and create brand new games with a new partner, EA."
"We're excited," added Jason West, President of Respawn Entertainment. "Now that the team is in control of the games and brands, we can ensure that the fans are treated as well as they deserve."
Frank Gibeau, President of the EA Games Label commented, "This is the start of a great publishing partnership – one that I expect will develop blockbuster game franchises. Jason and Vince are two of the top creative leaders in the entertainment industry. At EA, we're honored to be their partners and to give them the support they need to hire a team and return to making incredible games."

Good for EA and good for them. Not enough bad things can happen to Activision...and yeah, I anticipate a ton of the talent at IW will go their way.
Meanwhile, Activision will pump out mediocre CoDs until everybody is sick of them (see Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Spider-Man, arguably CoD already etc.)

Well this does support Activision's claim that they were working on this kind of deal when they fired them. I support them wanting to do it and get away from Activision, but it will be ammo in Activision's lawsuit.

Good for them, Activision can burn for all I care. They'll never get another cent from me...

Yeah, hopefully they win the rights to COD, which might be the beginning of the end for Activision's current management. Kotick and Co. have already disgusted me to the point that I've sold all my Activision games and won't be buying another one until things change.

Other than overcharging for DLC, what has Activision done to warrant such wrath from gamers?

Well it is the thing Activision accused them of doing and firing them for and then the deal happens this fast after they are fired. You can bet that will get brought up in court and Activision has already commented just that.
"This agreement comes as no surprise to Activision given the myriad of improper activities detailed in the cross-complaint filed on Friday against Jason West and Vince Zampella."

Wait, so EA is not longer the Evil Empire? That's Activision now?
I don't care about that, I buy the IW developed games, I love Assassin's Creed and some other games from Activision and I will also keep buying games from whoever makes a games that I like.

Yes, and it's not close.
EA has been about new IP (Rock Band, Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, Brutal Legend) while Activision has been running a scorched earth campaign with their annual (or more) franchises (Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, CoD). Kotick has also said some absurd stuff about game development and went as far as to sue the Brutal Legend guys AFTER letting them go.
Assassin's Creed is Ubisoft.

Yay for EA, the company that charges you $60 for a mostly multiplayer game, only to shut servers down a year later and tell you to buy the sequel at a later date!
Yay for EA, the company that sells a strictly multiplayer game for $15 and then pulls servers for their newest cash cow, seven months later, leaving gamers with a largely unplayable game!

On the flipside, if Bobby Kotick was my boss, I'd probably have my ear to the ground for other options myself.

Re: Infinity Ward co-founders Respawn at EA
Modern Warfare 2 might be causing a stink in the UK thanks to its disgusting RRP of £54.99, but if you think evil publisher Activision cared, you'd be mistaken. In fact, CEO Bobby Kotick has admitted, without a shred of shame, that he would raise game prices even higher if he could.
Kotick's response came after Mike Griffith answered an anylyst question on price points: "And then on the second question, Tony, on the pricing, we’ve had for all of our launch titles in the back half of this year, some of which contain peripherals, as you point out, very strong retailer acceptance and support for all parts of our plan, including our merchandising plans, our marketing programs, and our price points."
To which Kotick added: "And Tony, you know if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further."

Never heard of the guy before. Even after reading this article, I don't see the big deal. You think a game/add-on/peripheral is overpriced or downright sucks? Don't buy it or wait 'til it's on clearance.

Re: Infinity Ward co-founders Respawn at EA
not sure if the above quote does Kotick justice. How about:
"I don't think it is specific to video games. I think that if you look at how much volatility there is in the economy and, dependent upon your view about macroeconomic picture and I think we have a real culture of thrift. And I think the goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks that we brought in to Activision 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."
"I think we definitely have been able to instill the culture, the skepticism and pessimism and fear that you should have in an economy like we are in today. And so, while generally people talk about the recession, we are pretty good at keeping people focused on the deep depression."

Looks like the house of Infinity Ward is crumbling with quite a few people jumping ship:
Francesco ("Frank") Gigliotti - lead software engineer
Todd Alderman - lead designer
Mackey McCandlish - lead designer
Jon Shiring - programmer
Bruce Ferriz - senior animator
No sign of any of them turning up at Respawn yet. Who knows, what kind of impact this will have on CoD, but Rare never fully recovered when everyone jumped ship.

Yeah, it's not just one or two quotes. There are tons of them and, when you put them all together, it becomes clear he's someone that doesn't care about the industry at all, beyond his own financial gain. Maybe it's naive to think that most of the publishers at least care somewhat about games and the subculture that buys them, but at least they seem to pay lip service to it. And beyond that, the guy's attitude towards running a business and how to treat employees fulfills just about every stereotype of a self-centered corporate shitheel. The fact that he basically made $37 million off of the work other people did on MW2 made me feel guilty for buying a copy.
