Official Gears of War 3 thread

http://www.edge-online.com/news/firs...meplay-details

Quote:
Gears Of War 3 will shake up the franchise's acclaimed cover system and feature underwater missions for the first time, Edge can reveal.

Developer Epic Games is set to evolve the combat by introducing new Locust foes with tentacle-like appendages which are capable of extending to player cover spots.

Meanwhile, the COG members of Delta Squad will be equipped with explosives that can travel beneath the ground to take out enemy cover positions, our US publishing source told us.

While the first two Gears games offered mobile cover in the form of objects like burnt out cars that could be pushed around, Gears Of War 3 will feature a heavy duty mech suit the COGs can utilise both for protection and to wreak havoc.

All of these new features will be present in the singleplayer campaign and multiplayer modes, Edge understands.

We were also informed that the game will be set during the summer and introduce a number of new environments to the series, including underwater locations. The end of the last title saw the COGs sink mankind’s last city, Jacinto, and flood the Hollow in order to take out the Locust Horde beneath the surface.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 demo at GDC in March showed off jungle or foliage-heavy areas, which could also make an appearance in Gears Of War 3 - Epic previously used GDC 2008 to debut Unreal Engine upgrades that went on to show up in Gears 2.

Gears Of War: Jacinto's Remnant, a novel written in conjunction with Epic, continues the Gears story from the conclusion of the second game. One story strand focuses on the island of Vectes, a former COG naval base sporting fertile lowlands, forests and a river. This setting could be ideal to show off the developer’s new Unreal Engine features were it to show up in Gears Of War 3.

Gears Of War 3 has yet to be officially announced. However, Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski is set to reveal a new game on Monday’s episode of US talk show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and it could be on the agenda. He was originally set to appear on tonight’s show - the same day we predicted Gears Of War 3 would officially be unveiled – but said that the change in schedule would allow Epic “to take a couple more days to polish” its game.

Re: The trilogy complete? Official Gears of War 3 thread

I remember another big franchise that claimed it would only be a trilogy. I doubt Microsoft will abandon the series. I fully expect Gears of war 4 on xbox 720.

I love gears but I'm skeptical about the underwater business.

Gears of War 3 announced by ... your Xbox

We actually hadn't heard that Gears of War 3 was announced -- wasn't Cliff Bleszinski's big reveal bumped to Monday? -- but thanks to the marvels of modern technology and inattentive switch flippers, our Xbox 360 has brought us up to speed. The menu item (shown above) in the Xbox Spotlight channel doesn't lead to any further information, but does seem to confirm that "the epic story concludes April 2011."

Ok, that sounds better if true. Even in Bioshock there is no fighting in the water itself.

The multiplayer disaster of the 2nd turned me off from the series after playing hours and hours of the 1st. It will be interesting to see if its fixed this time out of the gate.

Yep, I remember playing Horde for hours when it first came out. But never played one multiplayer match.

Yeah, that's why only one game in this recent top-10 sales list had any sort of major online multi-player component (two, if you include Biochock2's middling multi-player mode) ....

1 Bioshock 2* 360
2 New Super Mario Bros. WII WII
3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2* 360
4 Just Dance WII Ubisoft
5 WII Sports Resort w/WII Motion Plus* WII
6 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2* PS3
7 Mass Effect 2* 360
8 Dante's Inferno: Divine Edition PS3
9 Dante's Inferno 360
10 Heavy Rain

Re: The trilogy complete? Official Gears of War 3 thread

I'd like to see if they could incorporate the use of a few AI Bots just to fill in be it a Horde match or something like four-player co-op (Left 4 Dead). Sometimes the extra hand be it real person or even AI can help. Hard to say how much better the weapons can get. The GOW2 offered some of the best with the flamer and using the shields was a major plus.

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on UU’s) for the week of March 29th, 2010:

1 Modern Warfare 2
2 Halo 3
3 Battlefield Bad Co. 2
4 Call of Duty: WaW
5 FIFA 10
6 Call of Duty 4
7 Game Room ***
8 GTA IV (Purchase the full game for direct download)
9 Gears of War 2
10 Left 4 Dead 2
11 Forza Motorsport 3 (Download the demo)
12 Splinter Cell Conviction Demo (Download the demo)
13 FINAL FANTASY XIII
14 NBA 2K10
15 Halo 3: ODST
16 Just Cause 2 Demo (Purchase the game)
17 Madden NFL 10 (Download the demo)
18 Borderlands
19 NHL 10
20 Assassin's Creed II

12 of the top 20 (including the top 6) are widely accepted as multiplayer games. I'm assuming the sports games are being played in multiplayer modes but, even if not, the top 4 and #6, #9, and #10 definitely are. Good multiplayer games persist and don't impact sales charts that much except during launch. Gears 3 will make a huge splash.
